"Very happy w/ 455 CoffeeTEAM"
I'm very glad I didn't listen to all the naysayers--some were even for completely different coffeemakers. I love this coffeemaker. I have used it daily for six months, with NO problems. As others have found, most of the bad reviews come from one of two reasons.

The first is following the directions. Yes, you have to be able to follow directions. Like most gadgets these days, if you try to wing it or don't pay attention to what you're doing, you will most likely screw it up. I've only screwed it up one time, and it was my fault--not the coffeemaker's. The comparison to setting a VCR was close in required common sense, but the maker is still simpler.

The second reason most have put this down, is that it doesn't make strong enough coffee for them. This is entirely true, but also a matter of taste. I prefer strong coffee, and so have to resort to one of the tricks mentioned in other reviews to get the strength I want. But it is not nearly as difficult as people suggest. I can still get ten cups of coffee at the strength I desire. It does not make espresso if you need your drink that strong. That being said, your taste is unique, and most likely you'll be able to find the right combination with a couple tries.

The grinder has performed perfectly for me every day for six months. Never has it overflowed, and it does not spread copious amounts of coffee everywhere. You will have a couple of grounds on the counter after a grinding, but I don't find this to be an annoyance, or to be an adequate reason to not recommend the coffeemaker.

I gave it five stars for doing exactly what it's supposed to do at a great price!

"Wow - what a coffee maker!"
This is the only burr grinder/coffee maker that is thermal on the market...and it's the only choice you need. This coffee maker is great. My husband roasts his own coffee and is very particular about how it's ground and brewed. He loves all the settings on this machine and is very pleased with how it operates. It comes with a short little DVD that shows you how to use it and that makes the whole process of getting started very easy. It's easy to clean, makes great coffee and is really cool looking too. The only drawback I could find is that it juts out pretty far on the kitchen counter and because you need to be able to open the top compartments for water and beans and such, it's not practical to put it on the part of the counter where there are cabinets right above...so plan on it taking up a fair amount of valuable space and sticking out to at least the middle of your counter top.

"Great Machine, Great Coffee"
We have had this coffee maker for a couple of weeks and our whole family loves it. I have college-aged children who are all home for the summer and we are up in the morning at different times. Every cup of coffee is totally perfect (it took us a couple of days to get the right grind for our favorite beans) and the thermal cup keeps the coffee hot and fresh for hours. I feel like I've waited for years to get fresh ground coffee this good at home.

"An Excellent Coffee Maker"
Mind you, I purchased a refurbished model at $168 so even though I paid almost half the price I took the leap of faith in a used model. I figured "it's a coffee maker, how much bumping around can it possibly go though?"

My risk was rewarded with something that looks and works like new. I love my machine and even though the critical review says you're paying $100 for the pot alone I thought the stylings was much classier and for some people who put untold amounts of money into their kitchens, it's worth it.

The pot is absolutely NOTHING to scoff at. It's a thermal retainer and the maker itself does NOT use a burner. What this means is that you do NOT end up burning your coffee and - I kid you not - the coffee was still steaming hot 24 hours after the initial drip (I tested it because a professional review said it last 24 hours and I was just curious).

The User Interface was very Euro, not that many buttons and kept as simple and classy as possible. The indicator lights are low key but elegant and the menus are easy to navigate through. You will spend more time in the mechanical workings for the grinder/drip than the electronic menu. But seriously, even that took me only 5 minutes to learn.

The conical burr grinder is considered the best of the best. It's a premium that leaves blade grinders (pardon the pun) in the dust. The coffee tastes THAT much better and for a person who has his morning rituals, every small improvement in my day is THAT much more worth it.

It's an eye turner but it's also quite daunting the first time. There are ways you can go wrong in the set up but like anything, after the first few tries things become second nature.

Ask yourself, if you're here, looking, really considering buying this high end coffee maker, you must be an enthusiast and thus you are willing to handle the learning curve. If you're not, you can go and buy a cheaper one that may not be as good but is good enough.

It's all the difference between a Chevy Malibu with automatic transition and and an Aston Martin with manual transmission: In the end they are both respectable cars with four wheels and get you from point A to point B. And the quality of experience you get from the Aston may not be worth the price for some - might be priceless to others.

This coffee maker is priceless to me for looks, function and technical detail.

"I hate this coffeemaker"
This machine's design flaws and poor construction make it horribly frustrating to use. The lid that goes over the filter cup is made of plastic which warped after one spin through the dishwasher, so now the filter cup doesn't swing freely. I had to wait until the grind cycle was complete and "assist" the basket when it swung into the brew position. So much for an automatic coffeemaker! I have to pull the machine far forward on my countertop because the lid to the water reservoir lifts up so high. Controls are on the side so that requires turning it sideways to program that day's brew. Programming is done by twisting a knob; wonder how long before that and the mechanism that swings the filter basket from side to side breaks? I'm not waiting to find out; I'm replacing this with the Cuisinart DGB-900BC.

What our customer's say!

"I love this machine!", I love this coffee maker! My old coffee pot would burn my coffee and this one set on strong is perfect for us. Our only complaint is that we wish the coffee stayed warmer for a longer period of time in the carafe. I would definitey recommend it.

"think carefully before buying this coffee maker", Things to think about: Do I really want to spend $300 on a coffee maker that might break within two years? And how will I feel when Capresso customer service tells me I have to pony up $70 for them to fix it plus pay for shipping each way? If you have extra time, you can even ponder whatever happened to manufacturers of high-end products standing behind their workmanship?

Unlike many of the 5-star reviewers here, I have had mine for about two years--I bought it as soon as the model came out. I just HAD to have the conical burr grinder/thermal carafe combo. I paid top dollar. It does look nice sitting on our counter, but it doesn't get a tremendous amount of use (i.e., so it's not like we're wearing it out). Nevertheless, it has broken twice already. It is really fun to watch the machine grind the coffee and then--like magic--the basket swings across the pot to sit on top of the carafe. But that magic is enabled by some kind of MAGNETS in the coffeemaker and those magnets get finicky. I assumed there was a simple mechanical device that made the whole thing work, but no. So, if you turn your machine upside down, say, to clean out the used grounds thoroughly (which is otherwise impossible to do), the magnets might become discombobulated and your basket might not stay put.

I liked the programmable features but my husband was never able to master them so I am the only one who could program the coffeemaker. You need to set the controls or the thing won't work at all. I DO like the carafe and it is easy to use and keeps the coffee hot for hours. However, the coffee itself isn't really that great. After the first few months of use we became disenchanted and reverted to those individual plastic Melitta conical filter holders that brew directly into the cup. Low tech wins again.

These days I mostly use the coffee maker just for grinding beans. However, since the basket holder just gave out again, I might just put the whole contraption in the trash and reclaim some counter space.

"The Mercedes CLS of Coffeemakers", I've only had my Capresso 455 for about a week, so I cannot attest to its longevity. In my week's-worth of use, I can attest to the following:

1. It is a beautifully designed machine that will look great on any counter top. It may have a greater height and width than some other machines, but it does not overwhelm the space.
2. The controls are simple, ergonomic and functional -- once you read the manual or watch the enclosed instructional DVD. The LCD display screen looks nice and is easy to read as well. Allow me to again stress the importance of taking 5 or 10 minutes to read the owner's manual and/or view the DVD that is included with the machine. If you don't do at least one of these two things, you will likely find some reason to complain about this unit and post a less-than-satisfied review on Amazon or some other site. Just RTFM and all will be good; this machine is not difficult to operate along with a modicum of common sense.
3. Clean-up is as simple as you can get with a combination grind-and-brew machine. I'm coming off of a Cusinart Grind-and-Brew unit which I had for 6 years. The Cuisinart machine required a thorough cleaning of all removable parts after every brew cycle. The Capresso is so much easier! Because the grinding mechanism is housed away from the brewing apparatus, it does not become saturated in wet, sloppy coffee grounds. After each brewing cycle, the only thing you have to clean out is the gold tone filter (if used), the stainless steel decanter and perhaps the filter holder. 30 seconds under the sink and you're done!
4a. Brewed coffee is HOT and incredibly good. The machine claims to brew coffee at the proper 200 degrees Fahrenheit and serve it at 180. I didn't stick a thermometer into the decanter before pouring my first cup, but I can affirm that it is extremely hot. I have never had a coffee machine that brewed this hot. Consider this a big plus.
4b. Coffee tastes great and will fill your kitchen with the wonderful aroma of freshly ground coffee! That's what we're all here for isn't it? Well this machine is brewing the best coffee I have ever had from a home machine. Users might have to do a little trial-and-error in the beginning to get the brewing settings tweaked to their liking, but even as I was finding my "sweet spot" setting, I never had a pot that was undrinkable.

Negatives: There really aren't any that would make me think twice about owning this machine. I suppose first-and-foremost would be the price point and the fact that you can't really find a deal on these things anywhere. Is it really a $300 coffee machine? Well, probably in all honesty, no. But it is the best machine I have ever owned and I have had machines that cost upwards of $150-180 in the past. Before this one I had a $150 Cuisinart that gave me many years of service, but which also had a good many quirks (didn't brew all that hot and was a pain in the rear to clean).

One other possible drawback (though not deal-killer) would be the lack of a charcoal water filter. I've always used a Britta pitcher for my coffee brewing needs so this isn't such a big deal, but it would have been nice to have this feature available since Capresso seems to have it on all their other machines. The only other possible thing that I could cite as a potential downer is that the grinder is not necessarily whisper quiet. It's about as noisy as the blade-style grinder that I had on the Cuisinart. Capresso's website gives the indication that the grinder is especially quiet compared to their competition. If it is, then the competition's grinders must sound like heavy industrial machinery. Again though, very minor quibble.

All in all, this is an absolutely wonderful machine. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up. It is so choice.

"All Compresso Products and Service are FANTASTIC", We have had a Compresso Therm coffee maker in some form since 1994.We were instantly taken w/ the entire pot of coffee staying fresh and hot, without the burnt, bitter aftertaste of traditional heated carafes. I found your website to be a bit of a quadmire when attempting to purchase additional pieces and parts. [We are hard on our coffee makers :)]. However, when I called Customer Service, I was delighted with the service, I was sent additonal related parts I needed AT NO CHARGE. Not only did I receive the parts in record time, I had a follow up email to verify receipt. Amazon.com & Compresso is a dynamic combination. We started with the Elegance therm, graduated to the TEAM therm maker and we can no longer drink store ground coffee! It has to be fresh whole beans.

"It does everything they claim", I have used this unit for several weeks. It was fairly easy to program, assuming you have some experience with mainstream consumer electronics--pdas, late model cars, and so forth, that use layers of menus. It is handy to be able to set the brew to "strong" or "normal". The enclosed video also advises that you can fine-tune the strength further by adding more or less water.

"waste of money ", not only will the grinder not continuously grind (producing weak coffee) but Capresso will tell you to send it in for a 72 hour repair turnaround, plus 5 days on each side for shipping. I told them no thank you and bought a great Cuisinart. Cuisinart is $100 cheaper and much better. Capresso does not stand behind their products. You have been warned!

"high tech coffee maker", This coffee maker has a built in grinder but, unlike some others, it uses a paper filter that can be discarded. That is a big advantage to me. The burr grinder is said to be superior to others in that it does not heat up the beans as they are ground, which may affect the flavor. There are two negatives to this device. It is very tall and may not fit under the cabinets in your kitchen. It did not fit in one of my homes and the door could not be opened over it. I have a second home and those cabinets are slightly higher above the counter top, allowing the door above the coffee maker to open. For that reason, it has been shifted to the second home and we are back to our old coffee maker at home. The second problem is that the filter cup, in which the ground coffee is deposited, swings back to the water boiler and above the carafe for brewing. The cup sometimes sticks as it attempts to swing back. I have had to remove the cover to insure that it will swing freely. These two problems are disappointing. The coffee is excellent but the device leaves a bit to be desired.

"I like it--with one reservation-update", I've had this coffeemaker for a year now and use it every day. As with many reviewers it took some experimenting to get the brew I wanted, basically Starbucks latte. FInally, I asked Starbucks how they made theirs and they sold me Bold Espresso Beans and I went to work. On Strong setting I get a cup that is identical to Starbucks. Since I only rarely make coffee for others--my husband is not a coffee drinker, I am thrilled (almost) with this machine, though the quality is not what I'd like for the money. My husband gave it to me as a Christmas gift last year but I had given him the hint so I knew what it cost. My complaint, and I think it is significant--is that after the beans are ground--for me the machine always grinds the precise amount--the basket no longer returns to the proper placement over the carafe and the machine turns off. I have to push the basket the last inch so it will immediately start brewing or hit the button to have it start up again. This means I can't use the automatic settings, a definite drawback. If this had happened at first I would have returned it but it is no longer on warranty.

I have a second home where I use a Cuisinart grind and brew. I used it recently and it is awful by comparison. Using the same beans and water ratio the coffee is second rate by comparison and a second or third cup tastes like truckstop coffee--where the Capresso coffee stays delicious for a long while after it brewed. And don't get me started on cleaning the cuisinar. If capresso ever fixes the bugs, I'll replace it.

PS--An update. i complained to Capresso that the basket does not return to start brewing after the grinding step and then sent me as brand new one , no questions asked. I was a little past warranty time but when i told them it was a gift they said send it back--they sent me a postage paid mailing label--I held on to the coffee pot and basket--they would replace it. The new one arrived within a few weeks and works perfectly. I am a fan.

"As Fabulous as I'd Dreamed!", I've been hounding my husband for about two years now for the Capresso grind and brew with the glass carafe because the thermal was a bit too much for us to pay for a coffee maker. The problem was he balked at the cost of that one too. Imagine my surprise when my mom and stepdad gifted us with this one today!

I came home after dinner and immediately set it up. It took a little fiddling, but eventually we figured it out (we're not direction readers!). I am in love! This thing is wonderful. What a beautiful machine and it makes an incredible cup of coffee. It's just as hot as my Cuisinart was on its highest setting and the thermal carafe does a magnificent job keeping the coffee hot and fresh. I highly recommend it!

"very disappointing", I returned the capresso because pete's coffee beans were too "oily." Although the burr grinder grounds were very nice, the feeder channel would get clogged, even after cleaning it thoroughly.
