"This is the one."
If you're looking for an insulated coffee mug, stop searching and click "Add to Cart".

Still reading? Ok, as many others have noted, it will keep your coffee hot all day, it's durable, and the 360 top is just like drinking out of a regular coffee cup. In fact, I use it as my regular desk mug. With this mug, there's no need for an energy-sucking electric coffee warmer, and you won't end up throwing out cold coffee. If I get distracted by a problem or called away to a meeting, my coffee's still hot when I get back to my desk.

It is a little large for many cup holders, but I don't use it in my car. It seals up tight with no leaks while I'm on the road, and it does fit in the hydration pocket of my Maxpedition JUMBO(tm) VERSIPACK, which is designed for a 32 oz. water bottle.

The only change I would make is removing the handle, which isn't really necessary as the body of the mug never gets too hot to hold. And Thermos also offers the Thermos E5 16-oz. Travel Tumbler, which is the same thing without the handle.

"Thermos E5 16 oz travel mug"
This is the best travel mug I have ever used. The lid seals completely and opens for drinking with a twist of the top. The base is broad enough that it does not tip over easily. The insulation is excellent and keeps beverages very hot for hours.

"A product that actually keeps its promise!"
All other travel mugs pale in comparison to this one! It really is leak-proof. It's so well-insulated that scalding-hot coffee will burn your tongue after an hour in this mug. And I think it looks cool in an 'industrial chic' sort of way. If you like to nurse your coffee/tea all morning, this mug is the perfect choice.

"hands down the best"
This mug is so much better than any other travel mug I've ever used for coffee and tea. First of all, it retains temperature extremely well - as other reviewers have noted, you should let a hot beverage cool to a drinkable temperature before putting the top on. For my coffee this is not a problem, as the milk I add brings it to a nice temperature, but I do have to leave the top off or add an ice cube to tea. I've done the same with previous thermoses I've owned, but usually you pour those into a cap where you can blow/cool the liquid, whereas with this product its so easy to just drink the piping hot liquid straight out of the thermos - its also easy to scald one's lips. Which brings me to the best design feature - the 360 lid. So simple. It really feels like drinking out of a mug.

The product comes with a carabiner for clipping onto a bag, but its so leakproof that if there's room in my bag I just toss it in!

Significantly, this is one of the few stainless travel mugs I have seen that says its safe to go in the dishwasher. Since the coffee stains the inside of any cup and mucks up the top, I always put travel mugs in the dishwasher and have had to discard many where water got into the "vacuum" space (icky). With the solid Thermos construction I don't anticipate any problems, but its nice to have their guarantee.

This mug's design is just short of perfect. My only complaint is aesthetic - the yellow trim makes it so "hardware" looking. I would have preferred all black. And initially, I thought the "shock-absorbing" bottom was overkill, but it really does give stability to the base on a desk and avoids the bonky sound/feel that a normal thermos makes when you set it on a hard surface. Even such small things make this mug a pleasure to use. I bought two.

"Better than I Expected"
For about 10 years I had the model JMF-500. When I decided to get another I could not find one. I decided to get the E5 travel mug. I am glad I did. This mug has features that the old one did not. On the E5 one can tighten down the top for non spill status. Then a little turn of the top and your ready to drink. Thermos quality all the way. I highly recommend this product.

What our customer's say!

"Almost Perfect", I actually spent about an hour researching my coffee travel mug purchase. I had four criteria that were must-haves:

1. It had to be a mug that I could drink directly from... not a thermos with a separate cup for instance.

2. Stainless steel interior: I found that my current plastic cup was retaining too much sour milk odor even thought I rinsed it out after use. Also although the chance is slim, metal is less likely to leach dangerous chemicals than plastic.

3. Sealed: as in throw it in my bag and not worry what orientation it is in...upside down.... whatever.

4. 16 oz: or more... many travel mugs are 12 oz and that is just too small

This item that you are looking at on this very Amazon detail page indeed meets all the criteria above. It is surprisingly one of few that do.

Once I bought this, I found some other advantages that I liked about it:

- The thermal insulation is superb. Hot liquids stay hot seemingly forever. (it's actually a minor problem if you start out too hot as it takes forever to cool to sipping temperature :-), but removing the lid helps out there)

- 360 degree drink lid: This lets you drink from anywhere around the rim of the cup, but more importantly the design is such that it closely approaches drinking from a normal (un-lidded) cup. So no dribbly holes to drink from and no uneven dispensing due to trapped air.

- easy to clean lid: There are no hidden channels in lid where liquid might get trapped. This apparently si a problem with Oxo Good Grips LiquiSeal Travel Mug

- It has a handle: not something I needed, but it is actually handy for hanging it from your belt when you need both hands free

The Thermos E5 has lived up to my expectations, and meets my coffee travel cup needs. However it does have a couple of drawbacks, and for these I will deduct 1 star (I would deduct only 1/2 star if that where possible):

- Narrow opening: When the lid is completely removed, the opening is rather narrow. This not only makes cleaning (that is scrubbing rather than rinsing) difficult, but is sure to confound that barista you order that complex coffee drink from.

- Wide bottom: OK, this is great for stability, but it prevents it from fitting in most cup holders. I know it was not designed for this, but it is something I would ideally like to have.

- Open/Close mechanism requires 2 hands. Since it essentially twists on/off like a cap, it cannot be operated 1-handed like a "pop open" type mechanism

- Open/Close mechanism may fall off if open to wide. I have not yet had this happen, but it is potentially possible that if you twist it open you may go too far and the top will come off completely while you are drinking

"The BEST Mug, EVER!!!!", I was looking for another mug (it looked cool!) but couldn't find the vacumn version of it. I got lucky and came across this one instead and couldn't be happier with that turn of events!!! It keeps my coffee hot for hours (provided I remember to reseal the lid if I'm going to be away from it for a while), and is very sturdy (as my dropping it a few times can attest). I now have a 2nd for home use and bought my brother-in-law one. He loves his also!!!

"A great mug", Have had the first mug they made for the last 30 years. Thought I would replace it and am very happy with the new one. It should out last me if it's anything like the old one.

"Great Pruduct!!", I had been through numerous travel mugs for keeping my coffee hot while on my long drive to work. The thermos E5 has all of the features anyone is looking for, and the performance is well worth the price. My coffee stays hot well past the 6 hours is promotes. The thing is nearly indestructible, dishwasher safe (This is huge), and even comes with a carabiner to hold it securely onto a backpack or travel case. Do not fret the higher cost. This will be the last travel mug you buy!!

"wrong item", I've ordered it twice--I keep getting the food jar instead-amazon says they can't check the stock and to keep ordering it and if it is the wrong item return it-I gave up and bought it on ebay!

"An almost perfect travel mug & here's some pointers", 1/3 star off for having too small capacity, 1/3 off for being too thermally efficient, & 1/3 off for having a wide bottom(it takes one to know one)
1) After sifting through the confusion caused by Target/Amazon calling the Thermos E5 20-oz bottle a "mug", I picked one of these up. First time out, as per usual, I filled it with boiling water, then poured in my tea & left for work. I was finally able to drink it about 8-9 hours later! The 20 year old Thermos mug I'd been using had just had its butt kicked by 4 hours.
2)You can have a prob with screwing the drink-through stopper back in. I count it a good day if I do it first time(I'm easily amused).
3)I wish this had about 4 fl oz more capacity,
4)I recommend filling this with cold H2O: would make it more usable, unless you either won't be drinking your hot bev for hours, or you like searing your mouth, palate, & pedicle
5)The footprint of this is too wide for most factory cup holders, or at least in the Ford Fusion, Chevy Impala, & Dodge Caliber. I'm going to take my jackknife & shave off the fins/ribs that Thermos' designers thought would make the E5 look hip, cool, & happening. Having to open & close this each time you want to sip sucks when you're driving. I hope the surgery won't void the warranty, but of course, like with all Thermos steel products, this will last forever.

"Its da bomb!", If you, like me, want to sip a piping hot liquid (in my case, herbal tea) for several hours during a busy workday (I'm a teacher), and you need to carry that liquid around without the risk of spilling it, or dribbling it, you've found what you're looking for. Its macho styling (complete with rocket fins) notwithstanding, this mug is brilliant. The design of the lid is superb. A counterclockwise twist opens it and allows you to sip from any direction, and another quick twist seals it tight. You know how typical travel mugs have a little air hole in the lid that sometimes gets obstructed by the liquid, making the contents reluctant to come out when you take a sip (unless you clear the obstruction, which can appear pretty comical, or tilt the mug way up, risking a mouthful of burning liquid in your gullet)? This doesn't happen with this mug. Only downside is that this mug doesn't fit in car mug holders, so its not great for car use. But for on the job, it rocks.

"Thermos E5 16 oz. Travel Mug ", This is a FANTASTIC product. I have gone through many travel mugs and they have always let me down - spilling to easily and never stayed hot for long. I received the Thermos E5 for Christmas and I really love it! Some of it's finer points: Attaches easily to my rolling laptop bag or I can just toss it into my purse, am able to keep it next to my computer without worrying about a spilling accident and it stays hot for hours. I once left it in my car for 1.5 hours at -47 degrees and it was still hot!

"One and Only", This is the only review I have ever taken the time to write. The E5 Travel Mug is the only coffee mug I use. It doesn't spill, leak or break. I've had mine for about 2 years. Mine has been dropped, kicked, tumbled, and stepped on by horses, men and rocks. Keeps the stuff warm in -30 temp. and lets me carry it like a thermos.

"Great Travel Mug", I purchased this product for my husband - he loves it. The coffee stayed hot all day, even in 30 degree weather. Also, never leaks even when on its side. Since he liked it so much, I purchased one for myself - it's the best!
