Others say...
"Mario knows his stuff" Just received and used the M.Batali 6-quart essentials pot. This is a fine piece of cookware! Our coq-a-vin was just perfect. The pot cleaned easily and looked very professional and well built. No need to buy the expensive French brand. "Fantastic investment" I am so impressed with Mario Batali's enamel cast iron dutch oven. I make crusty bread in it and just love using it. Cleaning is a breeze with the enamel coat. What a joy not having to "season" the cast iron. I would encourage anyone interested in buying a dutch oven to purchase this one. Can't go wrong. It arrived in a timely manner and in perfect condition. "Basic concept is novel, but poor design prevails" I have owned this pot for almost 4 months. I am the one who posted pictures of the lid. This pot has performed wonders for me and has been the reason I have been able to serve up some absolutely delicious dinners. I read most of the reviews here before purchasing the pot, and decided I could live with some of the issues people were complaining about. So when I received my pot, I did notice a few small places that were pitted in the finish. Mine were in the bottom of the pot. They were very small though, and remain so. (Although, since the cast iron is exposed, or almost exposed, in these areas that appear to have been tiny bubbles that arose during the finishing process, I suspect they will get bigger as moisture gets under the enamel in these areas.) Eager to put it to work, I brushed off the small pits as something I could live with. And also, I wasn't eager to pay what Le Creuset was asking for their pots, so I thought this was a smart purchase because I was getting the most bang for my dollar. Since I have owned the pot (4 months remember), I have used extreme care not to set it down hard, not to let it bang into a counter or oven, to use extreme care when hand-washing it and to store it in a safe place. Shortly after I had cooked with it a few times, the enamel on one of the self-basting bumps was gone (assuming somebody probably ate it in a piece of their roast). Not long after that, another bump was missing its enamel. And, so now there are about 8 or so bumps that are missing enamel and some have started to show signs of rust. Here's my conclusion, I think the principal of cooking with an enamel-covered cast iron pot is terrific. There probably are numerous variances between what makes a quality pot and what doesn't. Far more than I am aware of, particularly since I am no expert. However, I think the inside lid of this pot is similar to any painted surface. A flat surface more easily holds paint than a textured surface. That being said, I may have been asking for TOO much for my money when I bought this pot, because I thought I was getting an added bonus by buying one that was also "self-basting". Turns out, a plain pot would have probably lasted longer. At the rate this lid is losing its enamel, I probably have another year of use before I pitch it. Cast iron pots are supposed to last a lifetime. Adding enamel isn't supposed to make them disposable. I can see where adding enamel would pose some issues, but this pot is just poorly designed. Using Mario's name, and the lure of "self-basting" are just the manufacturer's attempt at product differentiation. It really doesn't benefit the consumer. Additionally, I read another review that complained about the pot staining on the bottom. The same thing happened with me. I braised a roast and cooked it in the oven a few times. Had a miraculous roast as a result, but the brown staining in the bottom of the pot is impossible to get out. I recommend getting a plain enamel-covered cast iron pot. In principal, they do perform miracles with meat. Just don't get one with any fancy bells or whistles like this one. In the end, for what I end up paying to replace this one, I could have bought a Le Creuset. "Mario's pot rules!!!" Best dang pot I have ever used in my whole life. Inexpensive, heavy, qualilty and easy to clean. Don't buy a higher priced unit, this one will do the job quite well. "More than expected" I absolutely love the Mario Batali 6 quart pot I got for my birthday. it is everything I want in a dutch oven. I am looking forward to getting more of his cookware.

Mario Batali 6-Quart Italian Enamel-on-Cast-Iron Essentials Pot
Why I buy this one ? - Strong cast iron construction retains heat - Durable porcelain enamel finish on the interior and exterior requires no seasoning and cleans easily - Safe for gas, electric and ceramic-top ranges - Dishwasher safe, but handwashing is suggested - Capacity: 6 Qt. What our customer's say! "nekekark", This dutch oven was purchased as a gift. It was highly successful. Both gift-giver and recipient were pleased. Braised shortribs were prepared shortly thereafter, adding further pleasure. The product came as described with no imperfections. Packaging was quite adequate. "Batali Cast Iron Pot", I was eager to order this pot because it was an enameled cast iron dutch oven which I did not have. I am sadly disappointed with this product because the enamel has discolored and food sticks to it badly. I don't expect it to perform as a non-stick pan, but after chicken has browned in it it's suppose to release after developing a crust. No such luck. I feel I should have saved my money and paid a little more for a Le Creuset. I used to have one and did not experience the same problems I have with the Batali pot. I would not recommend this pot to anyone of my friends. "Great Roasting Pot, too!", This pot is great for stews, braising and for no-knead bread, but it's also great for roasting dishes, too. A 10.25 inch round cake rack works as a roasting rack and fits inside to keep your chicken from sitting in it's own grease. The basting tips in the lid keep the juices in. You'll love this pot...it's so stylish and easy to clean. I use the Mario Batali 4 quart just as often. Yes, I also have many LeCreuset pieces, but I think the MB pieces were well designed not to compete too much with LeCreuset. "Love it!", This is a great item and I use it all the time! The heavy bottom allows you to simmer without scorching the food. It also transfers from stovetop to oven easily. "Mario Batali Dutch Oven", Mario Batali 6-Quart Italian Enamel on Cast Iron Essentials Pot, Persimmon]]. When I received this dutch oven I understood it was refurbished. When I received this item it was without any blemishes. I have used it twice. The enamel is coming off inside the pot. Four or five places in the pot and two in the lid. I will not order anymore refurbished products. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Absolutely love my Dutch Oven", I did some research before buying the Mario Batali Pot. I don't understand why anyone would spend $200+ for a Le Creuset pot when this is the same thing. I have used it to make several dishes all ready and they all came out perfect. Clean up is super easy. I give Mario Batali's dutch oven an A. "Love it!", This is an awesome dutch oven. It is beautiful, sleek and contemporary for my kitchen. Of course it performs well too. I was going to purchase a Le Creuset but starting researching other dutch ovens and found this one. The price is great for such an awesome piece that I will have forever. The knob can be heated up to 500 degrees, unlike the Le Creuset's plastic knob. "Enamel on Cast Iron Dutch Oven", This was an incredible buy. I saw it for twice as much on another site. I bought it to make the bread and chicken recipe in Cook's Illustrated. It's useful when cooking something that you want to start on the stove, then finish in the oven. The recipes I made came out great. It looks nice sitting on my cook top too. But, Beware, it's heavy. "good product", I bought this product as a gift and was very happy with it. It has no defects in the ceramic and looks great. I couldn't beat the price! If you are looking for a dutch oven like this, I would buy this one. "Great pot (the second time)", The first pot I was shipped had three holes in the enamel along the bottom of the pot (which seems to be a common problem.) I then had to go through a rather difficult return process at an overseas Amazon call center (a surprising disappointment for Amazon) but my new pot was shipped quickly, so kudos to Amazon in that regard. As for the pot itself: Buy it. This is a very good dutch oven for the price. Attractive, easy to clean, and very good at retaining heat. Unfortunately the white interior did eventually stain slightly, but I personally don't mind. Lets people know I actually use the pot. After about a month of use a small air bubble in the enamel along the inner corner between the base and side burst and thus created a hole all the way through to the cast iron large enough for liquids and particulate matter to collect in but small enough that cleaning is nearly impossible. I've learned to live with it. I absolutely love the basting bumps on the interior of the lid, but wish that the lid had a tighter fit. It seems almost lopsided when it's sitting on the pot. Minor disappointment. If the lid had as tight a fit as it should and if the enamel quality was higher this pot would quickly receive a 5/5 from me. Other than those two problems, though, this pot is most definitely worth the money and I'd recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat. ![]() |
