Others say...
"Do more research than I did" Like many others here, I don't recommend this item. It does run constantly and never gets below 55.6 degrees in a 74 degree room. I guess that is in line with the owners manual "INSIDE" the box. They sure don't advertise that fact anywhere externally. I bought this for my wife because she loves white wine but it simply doesn't fit the bill. It's not as loud as others here suggest, but it isn't hush quiet either. All in all I'm very disappointed in this product and certainly do NOT recommend it to anyone. --------------------------- Follow-up: I bought this item April 9, 2008. It's now September 3, 2008 and it hasn't cooled for a week. The fans continuously run but the bottles are room temperature. DO NOT BUY!!! "Can't complain" I bought this unit at Sam's about a year ago. I am surprised by the reviews. I have had this for about a year with no problems. I haven't noticed it being noisy, but this is the first wine cooler I've bought so I have nothing to compare to. If there is a power outage - it does default back the the 45 degree setting (white wine), but since it has a digital read-out on the front, it hasn't been a problem for me press the button to reset it back to the red wine preset. It keeps my wine cool and we can easily grab a bottle and open it at night for dinner. I'm happy with it. "Disastrous design" DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT if you value your wines. There is an extremely disastrous flaw in the design, especially for red wines. If you lose power because of an outage or surge, the design automatically resets the temperature to 7 degrees Centrigrade or 45 degrees Fahrenheit. We found this out the hard way. You would THINK the company would be able to grasp the concept that whatever setting was previously in place would be the setting to restore temperature to, but this simple piece of logic is apparently beyond Cuisinart's ability to grasp, much less implement. When a power outage occurred during the day when no one was home, we came home to find hundreds of dollars of red wine at 45 degrees F. It then happened a second time. You can argue that the problem is the frequency of power shortages, but brownouts are a fact of life, and well-thought out product design should account for this. The logic is not rocket science. Needless to say, we will not be buying ANYTHING from Cuisinart again. "wine cellar review" We ordered this wine cellar around Thanksgiving for the Christmas season. It arrived by mid December but didn't work. We returned it and received our replacement in mid January. It was dented on the top, but we decided to keep it just to prevent hassling with another return. We should have just bought it locally. "Stylish and Functional" I bought this as a Christmas present for my folks and boy where they Thrilled! The brushed stainless-steel front is a great match for their refrigerator, and it fit perfectly on their counter space where their old microwave had once been (now over the stove.) Very stylish and quiet. I read other reviews for varying models stating that they can be quite loud. My parents have had this for 2 weeks now and have no such complaint (thank goodness) they are extremely happy with it. The digital thermostat and pre-set temperature options make using this cellar a breeze. As a disclaimer - I did know in advance that this wouldn't be used by my parents to store wines (wink wink, nudge nudge), so this might not be ideal for the enthusiast who's hoping to be able to store and age a few of their favorites. In my parents case, they just happen to entertain a lot and 12 bottles... well those come and go frequently and often. This was just something to free up their fridge space, while still being able to keep their wines at an ideal serving temperature (Red's they just take out before guests arrive.) This was definitely a great buy IMO. I may consider purchasing one for myself (as soon as I manage to land that dream kitchen of mine...)

What our customer's say! "2nd one and still not happy", I got the 11 bottle one as a wedding gift and it was fine for about 3-4 months until it raised to 89 degrees and we couldnt get it to go down and then the bottom filled with water. We returned it and got the 12 bottle one. Have had it running for 13 days and already it filled with water. I called Cuisineart and they said to return it as that shouldnt happen. The woman I spoke to said she ahd never heard of this happening with their wine fridges and shouldn't happen if we get another one. but I don't think we will- too much of a hassel! "Condensation Problems", I purchased my original Private Reserve Wine Cellar, Model CWC-1200, in November, 2007 through Amazon.com. I was having persistent condensation problems with the unit, so I returned it under warranty and received a new unit just a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, I am having the same problem with the new unit. The plastic tray at the bottom of the unit fills up with water within a couple of days. I have the unit in an air conditioned room. I can't believe I am the only person having this problem, although Cuisinart would have me believe that. "Doesn't last more than a year!!", I received this for a wedding gift and it lasted 8 months before it just quit working. It was nice while it lasted. Good thing I was able to take it back for a store credit. When i took it back to the store 2 people i had talked to there had similar stories with their Cuisinart wine cellar. Cuisinart should stick to food processors and blenders. "Pefect for Red wine", I only drink red wine, therefore, I don't need this to get any cooler than 60. I can see where it would be a let down for those trying to get their whites cooler, but not a problem for me. And enough about how "noisy" this thing is...please. I'm not sure if I have a newer model, but I can barely hear it. If you're like me and are just looking for something to keep your reds at prime temp, buy it. "Second one in less than two years...dead...", The first one died in six months, second one lasted a little longer. Looks nice; and it's compact. It's definately noisy, and the quality is obviously not good. Between this, and our Cuisinart coffee maker that deposited a pot of coffee on the counter top and floor a couple times a month, I don't think I'll be buying any more of their cr@p. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Cuisinart - must be French for "junk"", Felt I should add my complaints to those already posted. The unit cycles constantly, a considerable annoyance in all but the noisiest rooms. It claims to use only as much electricity as a 100W light bulb, but the cycle time on this unit could mean $100 per year at $0.10 per KWh. But my major complaint is the default to the lowest setting after a power failure. We have many power interruptions in our area and this thing resets itself to about 45 degrees, which it can't maintain, so it runs continuously until someone notices. "Typical Cuisinart Garbage", I don't understand why Cuisinart is still in business. Sure, everything they make has a nice brushed steel casing, but that's all they have going -- I have yet to own anything made by Cuisinart which works. I got this cellar as a gift (one given with the best intentions, and one I was happy to have), and it worked for about three months. Now, though, the fan just spins and the unit eats power and doesn't get any colder. I put a thermometer in the unit and watched it for about 48 hours and, no matter what the setting, the internal temperature is usually the same as the room temperature, if not higher (as I write this, the internal temperature of the unit is a wine-cooking 71 degrees, the room it's sitting in is 65 degrees). I thought maybe it was some dust clogging the machine, but after cleaning the fans and heat sink with some canned air and letting it run for another 48 hours the problem remains. I just hope my bordeaux isn't ruined. "I wish I would have read the reviews before I bought this awful unit", I wish I would have read the horrible reviews and saved myself the money. I bought this unit thinking it would be perfect for my counter top in the kitchen but after having to hear the constant "humming" and complaints from friends that kept asking me if I was running my microwave, I stuck it in the garage. It's loud and after taking it out of the box the thin film of silver on the handles started coming off and was so sharp I didn't realize that I cut myself on it. It's a horrible little machine and is not worth the $150 much less even $15. Do not buy or if you do, make sure you keep the receipt. I would give it a zero rating but it's not allowed. "Nice unit for the money", I purchased this unit and, contrary to the other reviewers, am relatively happy with it. The fan noise is louder than expected and you certainly wouldn't want this in a quiet area of the house, but its not objectionable in an already noisy area like the kitchen. Also, I'd like to clear the air about some of the claims against this unit. Many people are complaining about the power usage, mostly because they hear the fan going off and on a lot. The problem is that people are equating this to a refrigerator which would use a ton of electricity if it cycled on and off this much. But a fridge uses a compressor, and this unit uses a thermoelectric cooling system. Its a VERY different system. I have a power meter that measures the power usage of an appliance over time. This unit uses 15 watts when the fan is off and about 75 watts when its on. I have it set to 57 degrees F, and my house is at 74 degrees. The amount of cycling I get translates to a cost of about $35 a year to run the thing (at 10 cents a kilowatt hour). Seems pretty reasonable to me. In a fridge, the ENTIRE system (compressor and fans) cycles on and off based on the interior temperature. Since the interior temperature is fairly stable, it doesn't have to turn on and on much. I'm not an expert on thermoelectric cooling, but my limited knowledge leads me to believe that its a continuous and proportional cooling system. What that means is that its always electronically moving heat from the inside of the unit to a heat sink on the outside. The amount of heat moved depends on the interior temperature, the exterior temperature, and a voltage setting (you set the voltage when you select the temperature on the control panel). So the fan on the outside is turned off and on just to cool the heat sink on the back. Since the heat sink heats up and cools down quickly, the fan turns off and on frequently to keep it cool. The fan will be on more if your house is warmer. The "cooling" is always happening whether the fan is on or not. That's why it uses 15 watts when the fan is off. But, and this is the important part, the fan cycling on and off does NOT indicate a compressor or other cooling element turning off and on, so its not using a ton of electricity. Its just the fan. Now don't get me wrong, the fan cycling on and off can be annoying depending on the location in the house. But don't mistake that for gobbling up electricity. Other than the fan noise, its a nice little unit. I measured the temperature inside and compared it to the control panel setting and its spot-on. For most people, if you want to use the lowest setting, 45 degrees, you're better off just using your normal fridge since it should be set at around 40 degrees. But if you're really looking for cellar temperatures of 55 to 65 degrees, this does a great job. "Not what I hoped for...very dissappointing!", I bought this product hoping to be able to help preserve some of my better wines during the warm summer months. According to the insert with the product, if the room temperature is 77 then you can't do better than 54 in the wine cellar. My house temps usually run around 78 through the summer, so this unit won't even make the 54 setting. I have it set at 64 and it continuously cycles on an off with a fan that's very obnoxious and not at all quiet as advertised. On the insert and in bold letters they state "This is a wine cellar, not a refrigerator." I'm not so sure I would even call it a 'wine cellar'...more of an energy gulper (approx. 100 watts according to the user guide.) ![]() |
