"Simple to use, great odor control"
My husband and I went to Consumer Reports, read online reviews and went to the store to test the diaper disposal systems before we purchased one. We came down to the Diaper Champ and the Diaper Genie 2 and eventually purchased the Diaper Genie 2. The cons are that you have to buy the Diaper Genie 2 refills instead of just using any plastic bag, but this is far outweighed, in our opinion, by the odor control that the Diaper Genie 2 offers. We have had some very messy diapers, and pushing the diaper through the door to the bag has never been a problem. Changing the bags are easy, and changing the refills are easy too. We have never had a problem with odor. My mom was so impressed by how well it worked at our house that she purchased one to have at her house for when we visit.

"Love It"
I think this is a great product - I prefer pushing the diapers through the spring loaded door rather than twisting into little dirty-diaper sausage links. I have never noticed a smell when pushing new diapers through.

"Another option"
I used diaper Genie with my first child. With my second I am using a Simplehuman stainless steel trash can I got at Bed, Bath and Beyond for $25. You can also find them at Target. You can use you grocery bags in it. The lid closes tight enough, and I find it easier to use.

"diaper genie"
This is the second one I bought. It keeps oder out really well until it starts to get full. Very easy to use and refill.

"Major pros & major cons"
This is our second diaper pail as our 1st diaper pail (Diaper Dekor Plus) was so horribly stinky we practically had to call in the haz mat crew every time we emptied the thing. Anyways, the Diaper Genie II is really good in that it TOTALLY controls odor. Our son is 18 months and is allergic to milk (enough said) and this pail does a great job hiding those odors.

However, there is a major problem. As other reviewers noted, in order to get the diapers into the pail, you need to push the actual dirty diaper through the tightly spring loaded trap door. I'm ok with this because I just make sure I bundle the diaper tightly and push on the middle of the diaper so no poop squirts out onto my hand. But, it is still gross, I admit. The worst part is that my husband, mother in law, mom, etc. don't know how and/or don't want to push the diaper through the trap door, so they leave the diaper sitting in the top part of the pail. This leads to an unpleasant and very smelly surprise the next time I open the pail.
I guesss I'll be looking into the Diaper Champ...

What our customer's say!

"Crappy Product -> Crappy Hands", I honestly do not understand the positive reviews this product is getting. I've never used the DG1, but I've only used the DG2 for less than a week and will be going to purchase some other diaper disposal system today. I guess the system keeps down the smell OK, but I'm not sure that it's totally worth it to have to get excrement on your hands every time you change a diaper. As mentioned by previous posters, there is a spring mounted mechanism that makes you forcibly push the dirty diaper down into the contraption. If the diaper is full, squishing it up against the odor locking door forces the diaper's contents to come out. I just don't get how this is a good system. I honestly don't think buying the refills are all that burdensome since they aren't too much more expensive than garbage bags, my main beef is the ease-of-use and sanitary aspects of the product. Would not recommend!

"Used for Adult diaper", I bought this for my mom when she is staying with me. She uses depends type disposible incontinence underwear. I ended up taking the spring trap off as it kept falling apart. With adult diapers there is more material to put in the pail so I agree with others that the spring load was not handy. I have found that the pail holds more since I removed the spring and I just use scissors to cut the bag and take the bag to the trash. One disk of bag material lasted 1.5 weeks. Even though the spring was missing there wasn't an odor after the door was closed. I admit I use my cat's litter box deodorizer to help with the odors. I wish they made one with a larger opening for the adult size diapers.

"It has been great for us", If you are reading reviews on Diaper Genies, make sure you differentiate the Diaper Genie and the Diaper Genie II. They are very different systems. The original uses a system that twists diapers into a string of individual sausage like packages. The Diaper Genie II is simple in that it just has a spring loaded trap door that you push diapers through and then snaps shut to seal them inside.

Additionally, I would suggest Googling "Diaper Genie" for a mix of advice. You will find some interesting results. In particular, there seem to be a lot of photos of people's first Diaper Genie bag. There is a strange following for these little devices. A lot of the posts out there are negative, but we have really appreciated having ours.

First off, we chose disposable diapers. For many that is a heated subject. We made our choice, and presumably you are considering it, too. Having decided to go with disposables, the Diaper Genie II has been great.

PROS
* easy to use / easy to refill
* no mess, small / compact, sealed
* works great

CONS
* We haven't found many, yet.
* Some people complain about pushing diapers through the trap.
- We don't have trouble with this.
* Can reek after months of use. (We have had ours 6 months)
- this is a common complaint, but we change ours regularly and haven't
had a problem, yet. It does stink at times, but not bad ... so far.
* Dubious environmental impact/disposable diapers sealed in a plastic tube.

"fatal design flaw", This product does keep the stink away, and it's easy to use. But it has what I consider a fatal design flaw. When the bags run out, the last length just slips right out of the holder, and you end up with no bag left in the top part of the genie. If you're not watching, you can easily stick a diaper into the genie without a bag. I go through a lot of bags with my twins, so this has happened on more than one occasion. Really irritating.

"Not very good", I dont find it very good because when you put a diaper in it , it opens up and the smell is not covered then....otherwise i have no problems with it... it does not leak smell or anything but while putting a diaper in it it definitely leaks and needs to be improved.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Diaper Genie II SUCKS", I wish I had gotten another Diaper Champ but I didn't... I liked the idea that the dirty diapers would be bagged. I thought this sounded like a great product. I read some positive reviews. Here's how it works though. You change the baby's diaper. It's a messy, wet #2. You roll it up as best you can. Then you reach over to your genie. With one hand you open the lid. The other hand then has to push the dirty leaky poopy diaper into the genie. You actually have to push this nasty diaper down pretty far. The problem is that to get it past the stink gate, you have to apply force... causing contents to spill out onto your hand. It's disgusting. It's like they didn't actually test it on babies. My diaper champ is so much better. You drop it in the hole and flip the top for it to go down. Enough said. Diaper Genie II sucks. I regret the purchase.

"Absolutely fantastic product!", The Diaper Genie II is absolutely fantastic. I heard about it at my god-children's birthday party when I was pregnant and ordered it online.

It makes dirty diapers almost non-existent as there is no mess, no odour whatsoever and is very simple to set-up and use. Only draw-back is the continuous purchase of refills - should be able to use with a simple garbage bag or something.

Had to buy one for my best friend who had a baby four weeks after me.

Great invention!!!!!!!

"A Great Product!", My sister used to have a Safety 1st product for my nephew. Now i got the Genie 2 system for my son, and the product is just awesome. Not a stint of smell inside the room. I see from the forum that many people's crib is that the refills are way costly.

I tried using the regular 13 gallon kitchen drawstring bags from costco and they work perfectly well. Initial set up could be tricky, but once the bag is all set, i can wait for a while and relax until the next bag needs to be changed.

I would recommend the product.

"Keeps odors at bay but cutting mechanism needs improvement", This improved model works very well for our family. It does an admirable job of keeping the diaper stink away from the rest of the room. I liked how I didn't have to twist each load of diaper like in the previous model. You just push diapers through a hatch. Easy enough.

But as far as holding up to 180 diapers, as it claims--I'm not too sure. It doesn't seem to use as many refills as the original DG, but that number seems a bit high. Maybe it can hold that many preemie diapers. From my estimate, it holds about up to half that many diapers. But I do use a lot of wipes and tissues to wipe my baby's bum and my hands after a diaper change.

One thing I would like improvement on is the cutting edge used to remove the liner when the diaper genie is full. I find that I have to wrestle with the liner to get it cutting right. I just found it easier and faster to have scissors nearby and use those scissors to snip the liner, instead of using the cutting mechanism within the pail.

Overall, the DG II is a good diaper pail that is expensive to use but worth it because it really contains the awful diaper smell.

"A vast improvement", I was very skeptical when I received this as a shower gift, as I remember the original diaper genie. I was wondering why the packaging was so careful to point out that this is Diaper Genie II and now I know why. I am so glad this product has been updated! No more twisting! Just open the lid and push the diaper through the clamps.
I have been using it for 10 weeks and have had no problems with poopy smells. (My son is breast and formula fed) The replacement cartridges are easy to install. The unit is easy to empty. I do wish there was something to indicate that the unit is full, like a window near the top. I go to put in a diaper and can't push it in because the bag is full. A minor inconvenience.

I find the slender cylindrical shape a great addition to the nursery decor.

The height of the unit is odd. It is only about thigh high. This isn't a problem for me as I have mine on top of a low dresser that I use as a changing table.

The only improvement left to make is to find a way to use regular trash bags instead of refills. I have to fill a 13 gallon kitchen trash bag to dispose of the liner full of diapers.
