"Awesome Coffee Maker"
Awesome coffee maker only one complaint. Can't turn the warming plate back on. You can add a little more water and turn back on. No seperate switch to turn warming plate back on. Other reviews had some complaints but have been using it daily since Dec. 07 and have not had a problem other than human error. Simple and easy to program.

"A Turn Off?"
I purchased this coffeemaker because I had the original grind and brew from Melitta. My only complaint was the pot has an auto shutoff of one hour. You cannot turn the pot back on unless you make a fresh pot and there is water in the machine. Too big of a drawback for me since our family gets up at different times in the morning.

"Will not do timer brewing if FM signal is not strong"
As others have said, you MUST have a STRONG FM signal or you
will only be able do manual brewing. Makes good coffee but
cleaning the reusable filter is more of a pain than throwing
away a paper one.

"I love the nice, fresh aroma"
I love this machine. It has worked wonderfully, great tasting coffee everytime from the freshly ground beans. I even enjoy the sleeping cat, and whoever thought we would go to the coffee maker to find the weather forecast? A nice extra touch. The only drawback is the difficulty in turning the hotplate part of the machine back on after it goes out after one hour. Overall, I would highly recommend this coffee maker.

"The Melitta Smart Mill Coffee Pot"
Melitta Smart Mill is a great coffee maker. My husband enjoy the coffee and the weather reports. I always need to know the weather report and I don't watch the T.V. to get the forecast. This coffee pot serves you coffee and your daily dose of weather. Enjoy!!!

What our customer's say!

"signal sucks", Most of the time it can't pick up a signal. If there is no signal you can't program it to make coffee in the morning before getting out of bed. Everything else works fine. I like that you can choose the grind level you want.

"Bad Engineering", Well, it seemed like a good idea. I've used Melitta's old Mill and Brew for years (loved it)and was forced to replace it after the latch broke. Trying to find one just like it, I opted for the new Mill and Brew. I was rather indifferent to the weather station feature but figured if it made as good a cup of coffee as the old one I'd be happy. Once you plug in the coffee maker it (in theory) is supposed to find a signal and the clock will automatically set. Unfortunately I never was able to pick up a signal. I called the customer service number for Fox-International and they told me to place it "closer to Colorado" on my counter. (The atomic clock is located in Boulder). This didn't help at all since I already live in Colorado !!! Fox also told me there was no way to manually set the clock and that I should return it. Thinking that was ridiculous, who would make a coffee maker with a timer feature with no way to set the clock, I e-mailed Melitta. True, if it doesn't pick up a signal, there is no way to manually set the clock which makes the timer (which I use every day) completely useless.

To Melitta's credit, they did offer to replace it with the old model. They said they still had a couple of the old ones on hand. Since I simply wanted to replace my old one all along I'm now happy. The new model may work just fine if you live in Boulder but if you're in a rural area, it's pretty useless. I could have lived with this thing if I could have set the clock. I hope these folks get their ducks in a row because their engineers got a little too cute and have (for folks in rural areas) destroyed a very good product.

"Don't buy this product",
Do not buy this product unless you are sure that the FM signal required to set the clock is available in your area. This signal is different than that for weather radio or an atomic clock. Without a signal, the machine cannot be programmed.
Also, do not buy anything from Orangesandonions. They have a Five!! day return policy!!! So if a product arrives during the week, as mine did, and you find out on the weekend that you don't get a signal but have to wait until Monday to confirm it with Salton (the manufacturer) then you are out of luck.
This may be the shortest return policy of any mail order business I have ever dealt with.
Also, these units are being discounted everywhere including Tuesday Morning.

"Fresh Coffee, Weather Info Handy", This machine makes my mornings so much better. I'll set it up the night before and then set it to start five minutes before my alarm. The grinder is relatively quiet, although finding the right grind level can be somewhat confusing (there are 7).

I've read complaints here about the hot plate being on a one-hour timer. I don't see why anyone would want to keep coffee for over an hour. The plate of this machine is really hot and only has one setting, which is apparently tuned for keeping 10 cups hot, as I usually have two to four cups waiting for round 2 and they're always burning hot.

The weather info is nice to have, although I've found I don't really use it that much. Maybe because it's summer so I always just expect it to be hot and sunny out.

I haven't experienced the MSN Direct outage / timer reset problem that some reviews have, although my machine almost has a direct line of view to the Empire State Building.

Once you find the correct grind to suit your preferences, you will get really fresh and great-tasting coffee from this machine. Life becomes even easier once you figure out how many beans to use for your usual amount of coffee and thus don't have to resort to using the included spoon.

My minor complaints: The backlit display has a "sleep" setting, but it's rather questionable since all it shows is a "screensaver" of a cat sleeping while staying lit. There's a backlight setting that allows you to select "on", "off", and "auto". However, the auto off is somewhere around 5 seconds after pushing a button, which is too soon in my opinion. So now mine just glows blue day and night... When there's a storm warning the backlight flashes on and off every 30 seconds or so. It gets kind of annoying as it does this until the forecast no longer includes the advisory. The advisories are often very minor (thunderstorms).

At it's current sub-$100 price tag, this machine is well worth it. I've had for about a month now and it has probably already paid for itself by eliminating my Dunkin' Donuts/Starbucks stops on my way to work.

"Very cool", This is the second one that i had. This one, the latest model, comes with an atomic clock and msn.com weather. the good thing about this is that every time there is a brown out, the clock resets itself so the automatic brew in the morning does not have to be reset. You have to be careful with the 1 cent little locking piece of plastic and the coffee filtering device. Other than that it works like a charm.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"The new design is worse than the old one.", I had a Melitta Mill and Brew for a number of years and was completely satisfied with it. The Mill & Brew is basically the same internal design as the Smart and Brew. The S&B just has a sleek (but unfortunately larger footprint) new exterior and also has some new electronic bells and whistles. Because my M&B was getting old and had a few broken parts (although it still worked) I got a chance to by the Smart & Brew at a going out of business sale at Sharper Image. Its new features make it a significantly worse machine. Two main problems: 1) You cannot extend the warmer plate time beyond 1 hour (which I was in the habit of doing every day) and 2) The timer signal is intermittent which screws up the whole timing function and I don't live in the boondocks. The weather thing is initially a fun novelty, but I could have lived without it. I bought it for reliable coffee not the weather. Fortunately the price was only $50 and the carafe fits the old M&B. How can manufacturers be so stupid. They have a good thing and then the constantly discontinue the good thing and bring out the improved version that is worse. It is kind of like Windows Vista. The designers are either morons, don't actually use the products or maybe in this case, members of the younger generation who don't actually drink coffee. If you need a grind and brew, I definitely don't recommend this machine. I do whole heartedly recommend Mellita's other machine, the Mill and Brew, if you can stil find one.

"Makes great coffee and weather info is very convenient!", Having read the other reviews prior to purchasing this coffee maker, I was half expecting to have to return it within a month. However, I have now had my Melitta coffee maker for two months, and I love it! I found the company's product description to be completely accurate and truthful, and I appreciated the up-front recommendation to check for MSN Direct service in my area prior to purchasing. Another reviewer had problem with the buttons sticking on the face plate--either Melitta has since fixed that design flaw, or the customer unfortunately just got a bad coffee maker, because not only do I not have that problem with mine, but I can't see where it would be a problem. The MSN Direct is a fantastic feature that has helped me out just about every day since I've had it. The directions are clear and concise, and since I'm one of those people who likes to read every section of the owner's manual, I found that it answered every question I had. Two things I don't care for that are personal preferences: The metal mesh filter takes more time to clean than using paper filters (obviously), and the warming plate only stays on for an hour after the coffee is brewed. In response to those, however, I understand that grinding the coffee inside the mesh filter is a space-saver, so I am willing to deal with that trade-off for a smaller coffee maker. Also, I imagine it was a fellow coffee snob who designed the one-hour shut-off time, because really, after that, the coffee DOES start to taste old, so it's another design concept that I'm willing to put up with. Otherwise, I have found that this coffee maker is everything it has advertised itself to be, and it has worked fabulously for me!

"Wonderful!", I ordered this coffeemaker before I read the reviews and after I read them, it was too late to cancel my order. I'm SO glad that I didn't! I love this machine and have had absolutely NO trouble, so far with it. I love the sleeping cat, the weather and especially the taste of the coffee. (I have it set at 5). The coffee maker that I had before this, was the Melitta grind and brew and I had no complaints, other than it was 8 years old, so I upgraded to this one. Thanks, from Pam from Washington

"Timer Poorly Designed", We've had this all of three days and so far, we have yet to find hot coffee in the morning, despite programming it at night.

Apparently, the clock works via a radio signal, so if you lose the radio signal-- VOILA-- you lose your pre-programmed coffee making time. Considering how weak radio signals can be indoors, during bad weather, under kitchen cabinets, etc., this seems like an inherent design flaw.

During the day, the radio signal is very "on again/off again." I figure it's the same at night. We'll continue to attempt to find a place in the kitchen where this stupid thing can maintain a signal, but it may have just been a HUGE waste of money.

Would not buy again. Recommend you don't.

If you absolutely think you MUST have it, do yourself a favor and try to play a few FM radio stations in your kitchen first. If you don't get a strong signal, this isn't the coffee maker for you.

"yummmmmmm!!!!!!!!", I just purchased a Melitta Smart Mill & Brew. As I write, I'm enjoying another wonderful cup of coffee from this cool machine! I did a lot of research on mill and brew coffee makers, and although there were unfavorable comments regarding the buttons sticking on this machine, it had the ability to change the grind levels and was said to be quieter when grinding than others. So far, I am thrilled! I use the finest grind and it makes a wonderful, deep flavored pot of coffee (no grounds in the coffee either!). And, much to my great surprise, even with all the new weather gadgetry and all, it's a SNAP to use!!! Hubby LOVES the weather thingie.... I just wanted an easy-to-use coffee maker that grinds and brews a REALLY GREAT and STRONG pot of coffee. If you want a totally mess-free machine, get a pod coffee-maker. But I actually didn't find this that difficult to clean. I like the idea of the grinder being in the basket and no jam-ups of coffee grounds in some chute that delivers the grounds to the basket as with the Cuisinart. Kudos to Melitta for making it so user friendly!!!! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that the buttons keep working without getting stuck... all the while enjoying fresh ground and brewed delicious coffee!
