"Irritating Machine"
Looks okay. No real problems with Grinding (maybe there are betters out there? I never thought about it). I CAN'T STAND THE GRINDING BUTTON! You have to continuously hold down the button to grind. After using it for about 4 months now, I've had enough. It's a waste of time to stand there for 5 minutes holding the button down while it grinds. It started as a minor irritation, but has culminated to the point where here I am shopping for a new one on Amazon. Don't buy this.

"Coarse setting is too fine"
This grinder works OK, but not great. You have to hold the button down, and even at its coarsest setting it still grinds finer than I'd like for drip coffee. It also produces a lot of powder and coffee dust.

"Might be from the makers of Italian cars"
Although it's just a B&D product, this mill looks like they used pininfarina for the aesthetics. However, like many fine examples of Italian engineering this mill looks great and that is where the positive features end.

Awkward and frustrating to use, the button must be held down, it blows coffee dust everywhere, it grinds inconsistently and clogs with even slightly oily beans. The receptacle is small, has a cheap and frustrating lid system and is made from a kind of plastic that coffee loves to stick to.

Attractive form and nearly useless function. Much too frustrating to use before you've had your morning coffee!

"Inconsistent "
I was surprised to see reviews stating that the grind is too fine. With the one I received, the grind is very coarse even on the finest setting. I want it much finer than this grinder produces. It takes almost twice as much coffee to get a good cup.

Inconsistent grind and DOA product for some folks. This is going back to the store and I won't be getting another one.

"Avoid this one"
There are three key design errors in this turkey:
1) It makes a mess when you use it. Dust blows right by the seals so you end up cleaning the work area as well as the grinder.
2) The grind is uneven. You buy a burr grinder to get an even grind to get consistent brew results. You may as well buy a less expensive blade grinder if you don't care about consistent grind results.
3) You have to hold the power switch while it grinds. There are plenty of grinders out there that you turn on and they turn themselves off when they're finished. Doesn't sound like much but in the time it takes to grind a brew's worth of beans, you could done everything else necessary to setup a brew. Holding the button effectively doubles the time it takes to setup a brew.

About the only good thing you can say for it is it's pretty.

What our customer's say!

"pretty good for the price", The bad reviews for this product are laughable. For under $30, what do you expect? I've had this grinder for 9 months and it works just fine. My biggest complaint is the mess it makes. I'm pretty sure it's impossible to get any coffee out of the basket and replace the lid without getting grounds all over your counter. But that's a minor annoyance. I'm actually surprised at how well this thing works for how cheap it was.

"Noisy & Hard to use", Come on Black & Decker, you can do better than this!? For as much noise that this thing makes, I'm surprised that the police haven't been at my door for disturbing the peace. They could have at least put an "on - off switch" on it that would stay on instead of having to hold it on for 5 minutes while this thing tries to grind coffee. If you want fine ground coffee, plan ahead, because you are going to be standing there holding the button on for some time. Make it a weekend project. I think that Black & Decker should have their design crew jailed on this one.

"Do not buy this coffee grinder. Just don't do it.", The only good thing I can say about this Black & Decker coffee grinder is the sense of morbid delight one can relish upon learning that all its many flaws are shared by others and exposed here in the Amazon customer reviews. But unless that is what you're buying a coffee grinder for -- in which case you've had WAY TOO MUCH coffee (or perhaps too little) -- it's really not worth it.

Let's review the problems with this product:

* On button must be held down. Moreover, the button is on the side, so unless you're trying to grind coffee while simultaneously thrusting the grinder off the counter, you'll have to hold onto it with your other hand. If you've got large enough hands, you may be able to hold the button down with your thumb while gripping the unit with your palm and fingers, earning a sense of accomplishment which I'm afraid to say is all too little consolation.

* Grinder gets clogged. Every couple weeks I have to take the thing apart and clear out all the coffee grit and dust. If this were the derailleur on my mountain bike, I wouldn't mind; I expect bike parts to get gritty often and need overhauling, plus there's a whole Zen thing going on there which just doesn't carry over to the desperate-for-coffee morning scene where the above scenario plays out.

* Grounds receptacle builds up static charge. This is an amazing thing. I had no idea coffee beans could so convincingly mimic the properties of magnetized iron filaments, as they cling together in a lump on the wall of the plastic container. I am forever scraping them off into the coffee filter. Sometimes they take to flight, perhaps attracted by the magnetic force of the International Space Station, only to settle scatter-shot all over the counter.

* Doesn't grind fine enough for espresso, or course enough for French press. The heavy grind itself isn't so very bad, but it's undercut the the fine powder of grounds that this machine invariably produces, and which causes so much trouble to the machinery and makes such a mess. Yet it doesn't grind quite fine enough for espresso, unless you're inclined to meticulously harvest all the aforementioned "fine powder" produced over the course of several days of grinding regular coffee.

* After a few months, works only intermittently. I've had this thing for several months, and just this past week it decided to quit working from time to time. The thing is a real stickler about having the receptacle seated just right and the lid closed. To get it to run, I have to scrape all the detritus off the base and click it in and out of position a few times, until finally it will chew up some beans for me.

With all these problems, you might ask why I'm still using this thing. I ask myself the same question every morning. Fact is, once I've got my coffee in hand, I forget all about it and carry on with my day. In fact, I've been meaning to write this review for months. For some reason I happened to think about it today while visiting Amazon for something else.

One of these days, I will remember to look for another coffee grinder when I'm at the store. It may take months, but when that happens, with God as my witness, I promise you the sledgehammer is coming out.

Please spare yourself all this anguish. It really is a very poorly designed machine -- so poorly designed, in fact, that I've sworn off ever buying anything by Black & Decker again. If they can screw up something as simple as a coffee grinder this badly, they can't be trusted to do anything right.

"I give it a zero stars/ one star is too generous. ", Life is too short to own a gadget that causes so much aggravation (especially when you're uncaffeinated) and have to work so hard to make the beans grind properly.

The directions never say what that release valve is for in the well where you put the whole beans! What is that for?

As others have said it grinds too coarse (with whole pieces left in the grinds) or to a disgusting dust that flies away all over the kitchen when you open it.

All I wanted was a nice med-fine grind for a cup of drip coffee and this mill will not provide it for you.

"design is flawed", This mill is seriously flawed because it jams up from all the dust it makes. After a month or so it clogged with coffee dust and the motor seized. I removed the twistoff cleaning plug from the loading funnel and tried to clean the chamber. I got some of it out but it is impossible to get most of it that way, and after a couple more runs it jammed again. The mill is defective by design as there is no way to disassemble it for cleaning. Save your thirty bucks!

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Perfect for the price", I give this 5 stars, because, for the price, it's a great mill.

I roast my own coffee (yes, I take coffee seriously -- I want fresh-roasted coffee every day) and I brew almost all my coffee (about 3 cups a day) in a Bodum French Press. On its coarsest setting, this mill is perfect for that. It gives me a nice even coarse grind that doesn't clog my press. This is a GREAT upgrade from a $20 blade grinder.

If you need an ultra-fine grind, this is not the mill for you. When I make turkish coffee I don't use it. I don't make espresso, but I'd imagine that it has the same problem. But, for "regular" coffee, you can spend $30 on this mill, $20 on a french press, and get consistently good quality coffee. Not bad for $50. You will get MUCH better quality than you would from a blade grinder and a drip coffee maker, and you haven't spent all that much more.

If you want to spend $150 - $300, you may get a better mill, but the price played a factor in the rating I gave this mill. If it cost $200 it would not have gotten 5 stars... but for $30? It's a great value.

"Great for Press Pots", I received a coffee press, French press, for my birthday and had to get a coffee grinder to chop up my beans. Had one that met an untimely demise when the hubbie dismantled it to give it a good cleaning.... Yet, with grinders you can't use the spinning blade models, which have an inconsistent cut and make basically coffee powder. This model on the largest setting is perfect for the press pot and easy to use. The top lid has a safety feature so that if it's not closed completely it won't work. The only reason it got 4 stars instead of 5 is you do have to hold the button down during the whole process. But truth be told- I have only used it for my press pot and not for my espresso maker or percolator.

"Broke within a week!", My grinder broke within a week after purchasing it from Target. I would have probably returned it anyway because my BUNN coffeemaker filter overflowed THREE times with the setting on "Fine". Yeah, no more messes but yet, no coffee in the AM for now until I get my new one!

"Not good for Expresso", I got this grinder last week and I'll return it today. It's good and quiet for regular coffee machines, but the finest it will grind would not work for espress machines.
It's a great price and deal if you only brew regular coffee.

"Don't Bother", I received this burr grinder as a gift and have found myself very disappointed with the function. While the machine does have a sharp look, I am retiring the machine after only a handful of uses.

My primary complaint is that this model does a terrible job at grinding coffee. The unit is not able to produce a grind course enough for a decent French press or even an automatic drip. The grind is so inconsistent that it is unusable for espresso. The device reduces several tablespoons of coffee to a fine dust no matter where one adjusts the grind. I think I would get a more consistent grind if I beat the coffee beans with the underside of a skillet.

Nearly as disappointing as the function of this grinder is the design. The grind knob is difficult to adjust with any precision (not that it really matters since the coffee is over ground and uneven no matter how it is adjusted). The power button is located on the bottom right of the unit (the user's left) and must be held down continuously during operation. This is impossible to do without holding the unit with one's right hand. The coffee receptacle is not dishwasher safe and the lid must be carefully removed which gets the above mentioned coffee dust everywhere. The opening of the receptacle is a bit too large and I get coffee everywhere when transferring the coffee to the basket.

I encourage all to continue shopping...
