Others say...
"Ruined too many mornings" Every few weeks, the filter collapses and coffee spills out over the counter and onto the drawers and floors. There is no predicting when this will happen. I finally threw it out. And yes, I am using the filters for the 8-12 cup coffee makers. "Great Buy for the money" I think this is a great buy. I live alone. For me, the 4 cup machines were just too small and the 12 cup were too big. I also did not want a machine with a hot plate since they burn the coffee and make it taste bitter. I was happy with the $10 B&D single cup machine which I kept at my desk at work. This was the cheapest Carafe machine I could find ($29.99 at Target). I am a bit of a coffee geek. I home roast my own coffee beans. Grind my beans right before I brew my coffee. I have not checked it with a thermometer, but this brews at a close to ideal temperature. I am using about 7-8 grams per cup and find it makes a good strong cup of coffee. The brew cycle is on the slow side, but for me that is good. The slower brew makes for a better extraction. I use a mesh basket and have not had a major problem with the grinds overflowing into the coffee. This has been a big issue with other machines I have owned. But by keeping the water coming at a decent speed, it seems OK with this machine. The carafe does a fair job at keeping the coffee hot. After 4-5 hours and three mugs, the coffee is still at a good hot drinkable temperature. The outside of the carafe stays cool to the touch. Yes a hot plate machine would keep it hotter, but after an hour or two, the coffee would be burnt. I will offer one tip for hotter coffee. Either rinse or or let the carafe sit for a few minutes with hot top tap water right before brewing. This will preheat the carafe a bit and make a few degrees difference in your coffee. I know there are a lot of negative reviews on this I will try to address some of the points. The Machine Flooded my Counter: This is not the machines fault. You did not have the carafe properly seated in the machine. This can be a problem with any machine where you stop brewing to serve a cup. Cuisinart machines are even worse at this. But if you make sure the carafe is seated correctly, you will not have a problem. Also if you fill it above the 8 cup level, the carafe will overflow. Hot Plate did not work: Thermal Carafe machines generally do not have hotplates. Plus hot plates generally have auto shut off now. So after a couple of hours, your coffee will in addition to taste burnt, will cool quickly. This machine keeps your coffee for 4-6 hours without tasting burnt. Coffee tastes bitter or metallic: Make sure to rinse after each use. Try cleaning it with sudsy water and the occasional soak with white vinegar and water. Timer is tough to use: Read the owners manual. It is not rocket science. It is like programing a digital alarm clock. Yes there can be bad machines that do not brew at the right temp. But most of the bad reviews for this product are the result of user error and not due to a design defect. For the money, this is a great buy in a thermal carafe drip Machine. There are no major flaws. It looks good on the counter, and keeps the coffee hot for a few hours. For $30-$40 I think this machine is a steal!!! "Springing leaks everywhere" We got this coffee maker as a wedding gift a little over 3 months ago and have used it nearly every day since because it has a thermal carafe. For anyone who has not had coffee made in a thermal carafe as opposed to a glass carafe, the difference is WELL worth the investment. However that being said, this is my first thermal carafe machine and as other reviews have stated, it does not do a very good job at all keep the coffee hot. The trade-off is the coffee never has that "overcooked" taste which is why we still use this thing at all. The worst part has to be the leaking though. On the unit itself, it has a hole drilled in the back as an overflow release which of course just overflows all over the counter if it is filled too high. Ok... so we make sure we don't fill it past that hole... easy enough. The carafe itself is by FAR the more troublesome leaker. You can't pour coffee out of this unit without spilling coffee all over the counter and floor. You literally have to hold it over the sink when you pour your coffee unless you enjoy coffee stained floors and countertops. During the brew process there is always some leakage as well. We have had to keep a towel handy every day in order to clean up the mess that ensues from removing the carafe from the unit. Bottom line, DO get a coffee maker with a thermal carafe, your tastebuds will thank you... DO NOT get this one. "Love this Coffee Maker!!!" I can't believe this coffee maker wasn't rated higher. My husband and I were notorious for spending $2.50 each a day on coffee because we could never find an adequate coffee maker before this one! It brews perfectly (brewing Dunkin Donuts at home actually tastes better than the store!) and the carafe keeps the coffee hot for up to three hours. It looks great and is super easy to clean. I highly recommend this coffee maker!!! "Worst coffee maker ever - will ruin your marriage" In a word - terrible. Carafe design is deplorable - makes a mess when you fill reservoir with water, and when you pour your coffee. Although ours is the white model with the heated plate, the machine and carafe are identical, only glass, and with a warming plate. I tend to use the grab-a-cup feature, which causes a drip every time I do, which in turn has led to the coating on the plate to peel away. And we've only owned it for about 4 months! I hate this coffee maker more than I've ever hated any small home appliance I've ever owned. I'm not kidding, my husband laughs at me but is equally frustrated with it. We're going back to Proctor Silex or a Mr. Coffee.

What our customer's say! "Looks great, tastes great", I've had this coffee maker for about 3 months and I LOVE IT. Although the previous reviews say that it doesn't keep the coffee hot enough, I've found that as long as you re-close the lid after pouring a cup, it will stay hot for a couple hours! The only part that isn't dishwasher safe is the actual carafe, but the lid and basket are. I make coffee about twice a day, so I only rinse the carafe daily and then actually wash it about 3 times a week. Another thing I love about this coffee maker is how chic it looks on the counter next to all my other stainless steel appliances - top notch! "What's the problem?", I don't understand the bad reviews for this product. I asked my wife to get a non-glass coffemaker because I am tired of breaking the glass coffee carafe when I wash it. I always end up buying a new coffeemaker because the price difference is close enough between a replacement carafe and brand new machine to opt for the latter. Coffee tastes good, coffee kept hot, easy to understand instructions. The arrows on the lid let you know where to position the lid for pouring and closing. Maybe if I needed a coffee pot that lasted over four hours this would be a bad deal, but all I need is for it to last maximum 2 hours, long enough for morning coffee with my wife on weekends and quick cup out the door before work days. I am confused by the negative reviews. Just make sure the lid is closed between coffee pours. No problem with cleaning, just wash in warm dish water. Also I followed the direction and ran clear water through before first use. "Great Value, Better than most", I picked this up the other day to replace my Mr. Coffee programmable/insulated carafe coffee maker (that one just stopped working after 8 mos. As an aside, I will never buy Mr. Coffee again). I have been using it for a week. I went shopping for higher-end/more expensive coffee makers but ended up coming home with this one. I'll just hit the bullet points: - easy to operate - keeps coffee at drinkable temperature for 2 1/2 hours. If you pre-heated the carafe I am sure you could extend it. At 2.5 hours the coffee is just over luke-warm so if you have to always have piping hot coffee, you should get one with a burner that stays on. I can't stand burnt coffee, so anything that continues to add heat after brewing doesn't do it for me. - Makes coffee just as good as anything I have used. I use 6 TBS of fresh ground coffee per full pot. -the auto timer took me an extra 30 secs to figure out...you would expect the LED next to the "Auto" button to light up when that mode is on. What actually happens is a little dot appears on the upper right of the time display. -easy to clean, and NO DRIPS from the carafe. One of my peeves is carafes that dribble as you pour. This one is well engineereed. If you are value conscious and in the market for an 8 cup thermal, I'd recommend this one. For the money it can't be beat. My coffee profile: -I buy Kirkland Starbucks Roast at Costco and drink 3 cups a day. -Coffee is a morning ritual, and also a vice. I love my coffee. -I don't go to Starbucks/Peets/etc. unless out with others, and then I drink the "COD" (coffee of the day). -I like a smooth columbian cup with a splash of 1/2 and 1/2. All the time. No flavored, No caffe-latte-crema-cappo-mocha-chino-shine-ola for me. -I can detect burnt coffee a mile away, just the smell of it puts me off. -I am willing to pay $[...] for a coffee maker, but I shop on best value, not sleekest machine. If you have a similar profile, then this review may be for you. "I would recommend this coffee maker", This is the second Black and Decker Thermal Carafe Coffeemaker we have owned. The first had a glass liner in the carafe. The current carafe is insulated metal. There is only a slight difference in the length of time the coffee stays hot. Our coffee is hot all morning and by early to mid-afternoon is starting to cool a little. The beauty of a thermal carafe is that the coffee doesn't sit and "cook" on the burner all day making it taste bitter and "old". I like this coffee maker and would recommend it to anyone. With all thermal carafes, the pot is smaller than a regular coffee maker carafe and one must take that into consideration when deciding on a thermal carafe. The quality is great and the timer feature is fantastic when we want to have our coffee ready for us when we get up in the morning. "SUCKS!", Here is the problem, the controls are on the bottom(on and off switch and stuff). So, if you have an accident or mess up, liquid spells on to the controls and destroys the coffee maker. Poor engineering, lasted only 3 months, threw the thing in the dumpster! DO NOT BUY! ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "No Product Support", I was unfortunate enough to have purchased this product. Initially, the coffee maker worked fine but it only lasted 5 1/2 months. When I contacted Applica (it's not made by Black & Decker), they told me that there was nothing they could do about it. "Very Happy With Purchase", I generally read reviews prior to most purchases, so I made this purchase with my fingers crossed. However, I am very pleased with the B&D coffeemaker. The auto timer is working great. It is a beautiful piece of equipment that looks great on my counter. This is my first thermal, so the pot took a little adjustment on my part. Since the pot must seal to keep the coffee hot, It naturally, must be unsealed for pouring, and again sealed to keep the remaining coffee hot. It seals so well in fact that I do not even wake up to "smell the coffee." It makes great coffee (IMHO) and keeps the coffee hot long enough for me (probably 3-4 hrs) I did not find operation confusing. I actually learned how to use the pot and the timer by reviewing the instruction book on the first day. My only slight disappointment is that I originally was looking for a smaller pot to replace my 12-cup pot. I checked the measurements prior to ordering, so I was not really disappointed; but, I would have liked a smaller footprint. "If the Price Seems Too Good to Be True, Here's Why", I was excited to find this machine (at a local Target) because it seemed to have all the features I needed, especially the stainless carafe. Imagine my disappointment to pour in water and have it leak out slowly all over the counter. I was pretty sure that wasn't part of the game plan. I had my husband look at it. He said it wasn't an easy fix and every attempt to brew a pot ended with Lake Erie on our counter. We decided to return it. It may have been just a fluke in that one machine, but I was afraid the whole batch might be bad and so didn't exchange for another one (even the nearest Target is a bit of a drive for us). What a hassle and what a shame! "Perfect for me...", This was the perfect coffeemaker for me, although I'm sure it's not perfect for everyone. My wife doesn't drink coffee and doesn't like the smell of baking coffee (and I hate the taste of 'baked' coffee). The carafe does a great job of sealing in the heat, along with the coffee smell. I typically only want to drink one cup before I head to work, and this works perfectly, especially since I drink the cup right after I've programmed it to finish. The 'interrupt to pour a coup' feature is very nice too. If the pot sits for a 2+ hours, the coffee won't be piping hot, but that's pretty standard for carafe models. "Black & Decker Coffee Maker", I originally wanted a different model (which was discontinued), but I like this coffee maker a lot. It really keeps the coffee hot for quite a while. We use it at work and everyone has been happy with it so far. ![]() |
