"Three broken coffee makers"
I purchased this coffee maker last weekend. When I got it home it failed to work at all. I took it back to the store and replaced it with a new one. Brought it home and it failed to complete a brewing cycle. Called KitchenAid to complain and they convinced me to allow them to send a replacement. Got it yesterday. Not even the model I had bought. You guessed it, it didn't work correctly either. I'm returning both coffee makers for a refund.

"If you like coffee grinds in your coffee this is the coffee maker for you!"
We purchased this coffee maker because we thought "hey this is a kitchen aid it will work great". We were WRONG. We have already had the coffee maker replaced by the company (they were very happy to make the exchange) however, the new coffee maker has the same problems as the old one. It constantly overflows or clogs. No matter what coffee we use, the courseness of the grinds, the filter, none of it matters, it still clogs or overflows. This is by far the WORST coffee maker we have EVER had.

"Why didn't I listen?"
I read the reviews of this product before I purchased it and saw the complaints about the low brew temperature. They are correct! The coffee is luke warm. (and so you can guage, I consider Starbucks to be scalding hot.) KitchenAid recommends that you pre-heat the carafe with hot water, but then what is the use of the timer? Anyway I tried and saw little difference. I had KitchenAid send me another unit. It was no better, so both are going back.

"This Coffee is NOT so HOT"
We wouldn't typically spend so much on a coffee maker, but we bought one of these coffeemakers with Starbucks gift cards my wife was given over the holidays (she's a teacher, so she gets a lot!). We do like kitchenaid stuff and this seemed like an worthy extravagance.

The reviews here are right, though- and elsewhere - that the coffee just isn't made very hot, and doesn't stay hot for long. We've tried lots of changes, and we even stopped using the programmer so we could try to drink it fresh, but it still turns out lukewarm, not nearly as good as the old, simpler coffeemaker we had. This model has a well-deserved reputation, and we'll be rid of it soon.

"KITCHENAID Thermal coffee maker"
Works well but I like my coffee a little hotter than this makes.

What our customer's say!

"Excellent coffee, quirky machine", I received this Kitchenaid KCM-515 10-cup coffee maker as a gift over a year ago. It makes excellent coffee. It has some quirks, however. I've had both Braun and Krups makers prior to this one.

The good: Handsome clean design. It makes an excellent flavorful cup of coffee. The stainless carafe, basket and filter are easy to clean. The carafe keeps the coffee hot for hours. The timer and electronic functions work well.

The quirks: Adding water is inconvenient at best. The two hinged door openings on top are less than ideal. It appears that the intent of the design is to add water in the smaller back opening, but you need to have the larger front door open to see the water level. The target area to pour water in the front is too small. At 5'10" I am tall enough, but this would give a shorter person fits. The result is no mater how careful you are, you're going to spill water all over the countertop. Additionally, whatever the problem is with the design of the pour spout in the carafe, it's almost impossible to pour a cup of coffeee without dribbling some coffee; pouring too slow is worse than pouring too fast!!? Replacement charcoal filters are difficult to find at times.

"coffee taste like dishwater", We purchased this coffee maker three weeks ago to replace our aging Krups which still make good coffee but getting slow to brew. The KitchenAid makes horrible tasting coffee. I don't know if it is because the brew temperature is not hot enough, or what. I just know the coffee it brews is so bad that we can't drink it. If you like good coffee, do not buy this coffee maker. Generally, we are a fan of KitchenAid products, like their refrigerator. But they sure screwed up with this coffee maker. Oh well, at least I have something to give my sister for Christmas.

"A mixed bag - we're returning it", We were ready to upgrade to an automatic coffee maker with a thermal pot. We were disappointed with this coffee maker and have decided to return it. Here are the reasons, in descending order of importance:
1. The coffee is not hot enough. This was a deal-breaker for us.
2. The shower idea is nice, but it ends up showering grounds over the edge of the filter and into the coffee pot. Grounds in my coffee = yuck.
3. The elapsed time indicator is kind of weird. Immediately after brewing, an indicator light goes on showing how much time has elapsed since the coffee was brewed. Nice idea, cheap execution. Instead of a digital LCD display of elapsed minutes, they three indicator lights, labeled 30, 60, and 90. The 30-minute light goes on immediately after brewing, the 60-minute light goes on at 31 minutes, and the 90-minute light goes on at 61 minutes. Doh! They should have labeled it 0-30, 30-60, 60-90. Nit-picky? Sure. That's why I put it third. But minor design flaws are amplified in products you use every day.

"Is it coffee or is it?", I have had my KA for over a week now and stuff comes out that looks like coffee but after a week of hoping the taste will improve, I have decided to sprinkle whatever it is on the lawn to keep the bugs away. You can read the instructions until Hell freezes over, But the problem is that it just does not get the water hot enough to properly extract flavor from coffee. My old Melitta that this machine was to replace, made really good coffee but has been discontinued.

"Died just after a year", Once the warranty ran out, the heating mechanism died (ERR2).

I enjoyed it while I had it, but I've now had to buy a third coffeemaker in as many years, much to my husband's chagrin! (Prior to this one I had the Cuisinart DTC-975BKN Programable Auto Brew 12-Cup Coffeemaker, Black but it kept clogging up and flooding my countertop.)

I like the wide-basket design and wide-open carafe (easy to clean!), and I *love* KitchenAid. I never had trouble with the programming feature or how hot my coffee was - in fact, I've retained the carafe as a back-up.

Not sure why they have an automatic shut-off on this model since the coffee goes directly into a thermal carafe and therefore there is no nasty coffee-burning hot plate on the bottom, but I guess it was easier to engineer that way for the full line.

Wish me luck for better coffee karma this time! I'm going with Capresso now.

Good luck to you, and happy java!

Read this reviews before You buy...

"perfect for ICED coffee", My cuisinart grind & brew recently died so I've been shopping for a new coffee pot. (digression: cuisinart has the WORST customer service i've ever experienced in my life...) I've read on virtually every customer review website out there that the coffee for the java studio is only luke warm, but since I'm a big fan of kitchenaid's appliances I figured I'd still give it a chance - especially since I don't like my coffee super hot. I picked up the java studio nearly a week ago and it went back to the store yesterday. The coffee was barely luke warm, and 'preheating' the thermal carafe hardly made a difference at all. If the coffee isn't hot enough for someone who doesn't care for piping hot coffee, I can only imagine the frustration of those who do crave it piping hot. On the note of needing to 'preheat' a thermal carafe, this is simply rediculous. For all of cuisinart's faults, in the 3+ years I had my thermal grind & brew the coffee was ALWAYS piping hot and kept it's heat for hours (never needing to be 'preheated'). Needing to preheat a carafe renders an automatic coffeemaker useless - bottom line. Kitchenaid needs to rectify this situation ASAP if they want to continue to keep their loyal customers.

I swear by kitchenaid - the quality is amazing and the customer service is great. With that said, I'm now the owner of a Bunn Thermalbrew (which is WONDERFUL).

"You can't screw up coffee with this one...", I received this as a gift from my sister. First off, you must know that both my sister and I are "coffee snobs", meaning we really enjoy the taste of a good quality coffee. Every previous coffee pot I have owned never made a good cup of coffee, and if it did, I don't know what formula was used to make it. I tried every which way, adjusting bean amount, grind, etc, to no avail. Coffee always had a bitter taste.

The first pot I brewed in this one was absolutely perfect, and so was every one after that! Excellent taste and quality. I also found out that I can actually use a lot less coffee with this machine, and still get the strong, full bodied "Starbucks" flavor that I like.

For those who complained about the temperature of the coffee, I have to agree to some extent. On cold mornings, I must prime the coffeepot in order to produce a hot coffee. That is only because of the hot coffee entering into a freezing cold metal pot! It has nothing to do with the brewing process or temperature. I also noticed someone actually commented that the heating element is barely warm to the touch. That is because there IS NO HEATING ELEMENT!!! The stainless pot is what retains the heat in the coffee. Just make sure to prime your pot if you like it hot!

All in all, this is a fantastic machine that brews a high quality cup of coffee.

"POOR CHOICE - STEER CLEAR", I purchased two Digital KCM-515 Steel 10-Cup Coffee maker as Christmas gifts (one for myself and the other for my sister). Both of these units turned out to be major DUDS and will be returned quicker than Santa can navigate his way back to the North Pole.

PROBLEM: The coffee comes out WARM and the carafe DOES NOT retain warmth for more than 10 minutes (and that's stretching it)! The heating plate is only warm to the touch immediately after brewing. You have to microwave the coffee almost immediately after it is brewed.

COMMENT: The reviewer who wrote that having to pre-heat the carafe with piping hot water BEFORE brewing a pot of coffee had it right! That should have been a clue. I had the same "gut feeling" when I read the instructions. In my view, a consumer shouldn't have to waste hot water to "pre-heat" a unit with a stiff sticker price! As for the reviewer who implied that those of us who are dissappointed with this unit need to read the instuctions -- gimme a break!

"Save your money", Although the coffee maker works well and makes good coffee, I would have rather spent $40 and got a Mr. Coffee. The coffee (in my opinion) isn't a lot better than what I have had with less expensive machines. The carafe is a good idea, but after an hour the coffee is only warm. It looks really good on the counter, but keep in mind that you are paying for the name.

"YOU PEOPLE MAKE ME CRAZY!!!", I just HAVE to write and state how WONDERFUL this coffee maker is!!! I am so disappointed and upset with the OTHER REVIEWS, because had I even allowed myself to listen to their "thoughts" I would have MISSED AND EXCELLANT MACHINE!!!
I have "sold fresh coffee beans" for five years, and have gone through MANY a coffe maker ~ THIS IS A KITCHENAID and it has NOT disappointed my husband and I in ANY way.
It makes DELICIOUS and WELL BREWED coffee, it is HOT, and it stays hot ~ YES IT MAKES HOT COFFEE!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know what expectations people have on these machines, but you should put a little more expectation on your "coffee knowledge skills" and leave the coffee maker reviews to those who have reasonable and genuinely honest reviews.
