Others say...
"I love my new Breville!" I was in love with the picture of the Breville and most of the reviews were positive. I had just spent a year and a half using a Krups I had purchased at Williams Sonoma for 325.00! That was the most annoying machine! Everything was difficult about it and the drip tray was sooo small. So imagine my delight at a high functioning, smoothly running, quick, fabulous, not to mention gorgeous machine like the Breville! I am so glad I ordered it. It is so easy to operate. It makes the best froth and you can also have a short or long shot! It is all in your control. I am a huge fan of this machine. And the price was not a sacrifice, especially with the free shipping! Thanks!!!!! "Very Happy For The Price " I would like to start off and say that I am not and would never claim to be a barista although after making a few different type of espresso drinks with this machine, they rival any that I have purchased in coffee shops. The only other machine that I have to compare it to is the Villaware Prima espresso machine that I owned and used for a few months until it broke and I had to return it. The Breville machine is far superior in design and function and the coffee is really much more consistent that what I was creating with the other machine. I use the Capresso Infinity grinder set on the first "fine" setting and this seems to work perfectly with this machine (25 second shots with 1/2" crema). As mentioned by other reviewers, the frothing wand is more than sufficient for frothing and steaming milk. For those who whine about pressurized filter baskets, I have used both pressurized and non-pressurized filter baskets with this machine and the flavor of the espresso is identical. I would definitely buy this product again. "Excellent!" I just love this machine. Excuse the typing mistakes because I am totally buzzed on 5 shots of espresso! Now, to qualify, I used to have a top-of-the line Rancilio in a gift shop that I used to own. When I sold the shop there went the Rancilio and also my favorite custom lattes! After a year of putzing around I finally broke down and started researching home machines. While I couldn't justify the price of the Sylvia, I decided to go with this one. I am so glad I did! Excellent shots, amazing frothing capabilities. I'm back in the saddle now! "It's going back today" I hate to take this machine back because it looks so nice, is easy to use, and made decent espresso, WHEN it worked. Unfortunately, as another reviewer noted, coffee only drips out of one side or the other of the double spout filter holder. This makes for unpredictable quality/brew times, and a huge hassle if you want to make multiple shots. I've tried it with pods, single and double filter. And no matter what type of bean or grind, it would drip instead of pour out in a stream like it should. I tried everything to save this machine because I loved the look, functionality, and the compact size. No luck. I called Breville about the one-or-the-other filter. No help. Even they suggested that I return it. Why I didn't get an Italian-designed machine is beyond me. I am going to exchange this for one and hope it does a better job. "Good Espresso at Home" This is the first espresso machine I've ever owned and after two years of causally looking around, I finally convinced my hubby to let me spend $300 on it. I like it! I've only had it for a month now, so I'm still getting used to it. The espresso it makes is great. I have no trouble getting decent crema from it--and I say decent because I'm still a novice at this. I am able to get good crema 90% of them time. I'm sure if I were a more savvy in-home barista, I could do better. It does take a while to steam the milk. I have a milk thermometer and it takes me several minutes to get the milk heated to 160 degrees--where I like it. I have no trouble getting good foam from the steam wand though. It foams nicely and I like A LOT of foam. So in this respect it performs well. The other drawback for me is that I feel like there are a lot of steps to learn in order to operate the machine. First brew the espresso, then steam but only for a few seconds, wait 30 seconds more to officially begin steaming the milk, then after steaming hold the brew button until water streams from the steam wand, etc. etc. etc. I wish it were a little more streamlined to operate. All in all, this is a solid espresso machine and I am very happy with my purchase!! It was a good deal for the price. I would buy one again under the same circumstances. And I'm no longer spending $4.00 per day or more at Sbux. :-)

What our customer's say! "Not enough power from this unit", The machine rattles and makes a lot of noise while your brew is coming out ever so weakly. There's not enough pressure to get the water through the coffee if you pack the grounds in too tightly, (which is what you are supposed to do when making espresso). The froth you might expect on top of your espresso isn't there, because the pressure isn't there to give you any. If you pull the handle to the center of the machine, where the diagram tells you to center it, the water can't make it through the grounds. We've experienced multiple problems with this unit and tried to deal with them by buying different grounds, ect., but now the pump is broken on our unit and the machine won't even turn on. What makes it even more frustrating is that Amazon won't let me return it for an exchange (perhaps it is a faulty unit) or a full refund. I spent over $300 and after just over 4 months of use it's broken. Don't buy it. It's too much money for what you get, a basic cup of weak espresso, or no morning coffee whatsover because it won't work that day; and poor customer service from Amazon, whom I purchased it from. They didn't even have the phone number of the company so I could contact them and yet they won't help me unless I contact them. I will never buy from Amazon again, only directly from the highly-rated vendors. "Espresso Machine", A really nice machine for the money. Delivery was quick and flawless. "No regrets. An excellent espresso machine.", I recently bought the Breville Ikon after reading every review I could find on the Internet. The other reviews on Amazon highlight all of the features so I won't repeat them here. In brief, I am totally satisfied with this product. How often does anyone say that these days? The design and function are superior to other machines, as is the espresso. Because the Amazon reviews helped me make a good choice, I wanted to report back that I also highly recommend this product. It's a good value for the money. "Excellent Forth/Steam for Cappucino\Latte, lame for Espresso", The has the best milk frothing you can get for under a grand. It's also controllable like De'Longhi's BAR32 but unlike the lame Krups 4030 or their own 800ESXL. As usual, start with about a quarter turn and adjust it as needed. I'd us a slight angle to encourage the milk's turbulence. It's even better than their Breville 800ESXL at frothing but the Espresso lacks crema. It's not bitter or lacking in flavor but disappointing. Use their supplied tamp and press it just enough to get the surface even and the coffee not fall out. It's the right weight to pack the grind thus you do not have to use any significant pressure to do so. Unlike the Breville 800ESXL it prefers the finest Espresso grind or even a Turkish grind or you will not get any "crema". The Breville 800ESXL is best using a courser Espresso grind level of 3 or even 4 instead of 1 or 2 for the BES400XL. The 800 has real crema and make a better Espresso or Americano but costs about twice as much. The BES400XL has light colored suds more than a crema. The Krups 4030 has a real crema but its frother is one of the worst EVER and it's tank is NOT visible which is a BIG engineering disaster. All 3 heat up for Espresso in about 30 seconds and another minute or two to then get steam. I haven't tried the BAR32 yet. The construction is on the BES400XL VERY solid. The stainless steel is of high quality and washes easily. There's a hidden tools tray under the water storage which can also be reached when the water catching tray is slid out. The water catching tray has a full indicator up front. It made of black plastic. I use distilled water in the large chamber so nothing grows in it as it sits on the counter for days and weeks. My 2 cup filter arrive DOA. YOW! The 1 cup is pitifully lacking in capacity. I'd rather have a 2 shot half caf. than a single. Another hassle to deal with! Thanks! The eject button is GREAT but I usually lay my holder across the lower grill when done to avoid it dripping too much after rinsing it out. The steel top gets quite toasty so if you want to stack up finished cups on top they'll stay warm as you prepare more. When you first use the frother/steamer, after each time you turn the machine on, you should probably open up the steam value and let the hot water squirt out into the supplied 20 oz. pitcher and dump it into the sink before adding the milk. This will preheat the pitcher and also avoid diluting the milk thus making it richer and smoother. "Dead after 20 months - Updated", Tried to make my morning latte today and the Breville Ikon will not power on. No response at all. I'm not thrilled when a product dies within 8 months of the warranty. I have kitchen appliances that are still kicking after 30 years. I'll update when I know the cause (and cost) of the problem. Returned machine to Breville and had it replaced with a new (not refurbished) machine. I'm happily making lattes again. Thank you Breville for doing the right thing. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", I tried 5-6 different brands (average $ 250-350) before I decided to keep this one. This one is perfect in everyway. It's easy to use & clean. Heats up quickly. Frothed milk is thick. No spills or mess. I use Henry's blend espresso from Seattle Best & my latte taste identical to when I used to buy everymorming. Now I save $3.70 everyday & have a cup everymorning in the comfort of my home rather than drove out to get one. I bought in in November 07 & love it everysingle time I use it. "Simply Amazing", So apart from a cheap espresso machine for christmas several years ago...this is the first espresso machine I have ever owned or operated. I could never figure out how to us the old machine and resorted to using the attached coffee maker. This machine is extremely easy to use! However, you should read the manual thoroughly to understand what you need to do. Don't expect to pull this thing out of the box and start making the best latte's in the world if you don't read the manual. Once you understand the simple procedures it really is quick and easy to make espresso and latte's. I'll be quick and to the point: POSITIVE FEATURES 1. Design: It's amazing how much thought went into this machine. The frothing wand swivels out, the machine is tall enough for normal size coffee mugs, high quality materials, cup warming try, Assist plug to make unplugging easier, visible water tank the removes extremely easily, easy to dump waste tank, all the tools needed to clean the machine come packaged with it, hidden tray behind the waste tank to store cleaning tools and filter pods, small sign that displays to let you know when the waste tank is full, hot water dispenses out the steam wand for hot tea if you wish, simple three button operation, powerful pump, etc...do you see my point? Anyone who puts this much thought into making a neatly organized and easily operated machine will spend just as much time making sure it's designed to last. 2. Ease of Operation: It's simple. You want espresso? Fill the filter pod with espresso grounds, tamp them in, attach the filter, push the coffee button once. Got enough espresso in your cup? Tap the button again and it stops. Same type of deal for creating steam to steam milk for latte's. Want hot water for tea? Turn the dial on the steam wand to max and hold the coffee button. 3. Excellent results: I use Starbucks espresso grinds and Starbucks syrup. I will never pay for another cup of coffee unless I'm out with friends! The steam wand produces thick, rich foam. Use cold milk and cool your frothing pitcher before use. Also, use a thermometer and you will get good results. As for the reviewer commenting on his espresso cooling to room temperature by the time he cleaned the wand....froth your milk first. Then make the espresso. While your espresso is being made wipe the wand off. By the time you wipe the wand off your espresso is done and ready to be added to the milk (which if you heated it to 160 degress or more like you should it will still be hot!!). I can't say enough about this machine!! Bad things: 1. Poor troubleshooting in the manual: The troubleshooting basically offers answers like...do you have water in the container? or Is the machine plugged in? Useless information when I couldn't prime the machine. I held down the coffee button to bring water out of the steam wand and no water would come out. It turns out that I didn't have the water container pushed all the way in. 2. That's it....I can't think of anymore. BUY THIS MACHINE!! "Rugged and Beautiful Design but Poor Delivery", I want t love this machine a lot. But not yet. I replaced a 10-year old Starbucks/Saeco Estro Vapore (and Starbucks still sells the same solid design!) when the boiler finally cracked & leaked. I purchased at Williams & Sonoma with guaranteed satisfaction. Great design and solid equipment. Good frother (Some suggest removing the metal tube for better frothing, I like it better left on). The viewable water tank is good but you have to move the frother wand all the way to the right to get the tank out. The buttons work great, except the frothing button shuts off at peculiar times during long frothing stints and you have to watch to press it on (so it blinks) again. The portafilter is uniquely designed: a kind of double walled basket fits into it & it has a basket eject button between the bottom 2 spouts. And the espresso coffee is ... so-so. Here are the 2 main drawbacks I have, after using this machine for 5 months: (a) CREMA: very thin to no crema (because of the double-walled baskets?) and (b) DUAL SPOUT: impossible to get espresso to drip out of both portafilter spouts evenly - I have NEVER gotten it even and I have no way to know how to get it so. The machine itself is wonderfully designed. Just be careful if you want true rich crema espresso, and want it in 2 cups at the same time! I rate it 3 out of 5. "Very Good Espresso, Consistent and Quick", We've owned 3 or 4 different espresso makers over the years, paying big bucks for some. This is the first that delivers for us day in and day out! Pro: -Quick and consistent brew with a great flavor -Creates a true coffee crema, unlike many other brands -A good solid feel to it, does not feel cheap or flimsy to us -Overflow tray is huge (and much appreciated I might add) -Comes with a stainless frothing cup and scoop for coffee (the other end of the scoop doubles as a coffee tamper too) -Seems to handle/tolerate a variety of grinds, fine and course, something other brands seemed to hate -Very easy to see remaining water/water level at a glance, thank you! -Very inexpensive relative to the rest of the field and the pricy junk that doesn't work very well or which breaks -For those who put their appliances away instead of leaving them on the counter: the power plug has a thumb-sized hole in it to more easily (and more safely) pull the plug. I've never seen this feature before. -Overflow tray that sits under your cup has a novel "full" indicator/float that pops up when the tray is full and needs to be emptied Con: -The clear water container a little awkward with the frothing wand and/or when the coffee holder is inserted in the machine. We find that these items are in the way and need to be moved to slide the water container out of the unit. Probably a picky comment that should not detract from your impression of this gem. -Water container also has some awkward angles, complicating cleaning. -Overflow tray "full" indicator noted in the "pro" section above only warns you when the tray is absolutely full with no margin for error, making for an interesting and exciting trip to the sink Neutral: -Priming/heat-up process, while fast, was very different from our other models. Not an issue, but you need to get used to it. Bottom line: Awesome, highly recommended! Makes espresso fast and does so perfectly every time. "A Barista's dream!", I spent the summer of 2007 looking for a new espresso machine. There was one criteria: my wife must enjoy her mocha. My first choice was this machine the Breville IKON, but as budget was not an issue for this purchase I went for the Cuisinart Cuisinart EM-200 Programmable 15-Bar Espresso Maker, Stainless Steel. I spent over two weeks and two pounds of beans trying to make this machine spit out a good shot. The beans I use are Tully's decaf espresso bean and they are bit oily, so it does take some expert manuvering to get a good shot...however this machine failed miserably. It worked well with Peets' Espresso Forte bean, but this is not the beans we use for my wife's mocha so it was of no issue, other than the machine obviously performed fine with "normal" beans. I decided to return the machine and go for the gold...I bought the Jura E9 Jura-Capresso 13204 Impressa E9 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center. This machine is AMAZING, it too however had a real hard time pulling a consistent shot with the Tully's Decaf Espresso bean. If it wasn't for this damn bean I would have kept the Jura in a heartbeat. As I stated before the main purpose of our new machine was to pull Tully's Decaf Espresso shots and nothing else. I had to return the Jura...which I kept for a week and made as many shots as possible. I loved this machine and it was hard to give up...self-tamping, self-cleaning and with any other bean a perfect shot everytime. I decided to go back to my first instinct and purchase the Breville IKONBreville BES400XL Ikon 15-Bar-Pump Espresso Machine. From the first shot, and now 36 shots into it, it has pulled a perfect shot everytime. Using the Capresso Capresso 560 Infinity Burr Grinder, Black Burr Grinder set to 1.5 the Tully's Decaf Espresso bean actually tastes better than in the store...an outcome we did not anticipate. I cannot speak more highly of a $300 espresso machine...if you do not have the budget for a Jura, this is the next best thing....yeah you have to tamp and clean yourself, but you also save $700. ![]() |
