Others say...
"Very Pleased" We have owned several HP products and have been pleased so we keep going back to that brand. The new printer is working very well, was easy to set up, faxing is a breeze, and we particularly like the ease of the double sided printing. "Excellent, just needs a carefull half-hour setup. Review contains setup instructions!" Pros: Easy to setup with the basic driver package (67MB). Prints with laser-like quality and speed. Wifi works perfectly. Great panel/lcd. Great cost per page for an inkjet with the 4 seperate XL inks. Cons: Do not install the full driver pack (300MB). It isn't needed and takes time. Also a little noisy but not much. After searching the net for reviews of the L7780 I found that although the original reviews gave it great praise and scores, user reviews seemed to imply that this product was awfull. As I couldn't find another product with the same features/price I decided to take the bullet and hoped that it at least was good at printing. I was amazed by how far from the truth were all those user reviews in sites like cnet, amazon etc. My L7780 works perfectly and that includes printing, scanning, copying, faxing and all of that with a wireless connection. Maybe I was just lucky for receiving a non-broken one, otherwise I just can't explain all those negative reviews. If it helps, here's what I did to make it work in less than half-hour. 1. Unpack and connect it only with the power cable (NO usb, lan etc). 2. Let it do the first time initialization for about 10-15 minutes. 3. In the meantime install the BASIC driver package from the HP site dated September 2008 (67MB download). 4. When it prompts you for the type of connection you will use, select network but DON'T CLICK NEXT YET 5. When the printer finished initialization and becomes ready to use go to the printer's settings (on the printer itself) and find the network menu and set it up with a static IP belonging to your home/office network subnet. For example my router has an IP of 192.168.1.1 so I entered to the printer an IP of 192.168.1.77, a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and the gateway to 192.168.1.1 6. Connect the machine to your lan with a lan cable. 7. You can now click next on the driver setup. It will search and find the printer on your network. 8. If everything works correctly set it to use a wireless connection and remove the lan cable. That's it! It should work, at least mine did, and the whole process takes less than half an hour. P.S If your printer already has been setup with a DHCP IP, change it on the printer itself through it's panel as described above and then go to all the clients that use the printer and in e.g Windows in the printer properties click the Port tab, press Configure port for the printer's port and enter the new IP there (don't forget port should be 9100 - it somehow changes when you change the IP). I'll post again if anything brokes during the first month of use! I hope it will not! "Why all the Negative Feed... Wonderful Printer...Love the Wireless...easy to setup" Great Printer - Very easy to install. Vista 64 ready. I have had this printer for a month and wanted to wait before I left a review. When I first started looking for a replacement printer I went to several local stores and a lot of online shopping. I will tell you after reading the reviews on Amazon I was scared to death to purchase this printer, but boy am I glad I went ahead. The HP L7780 was very easy to setup, Wireless was so easy.... I have 2 desktops, one XP Pro, one Vista 64, 2 laptops, one XP Pro, one Vista 32 and all share the HPL7780 printer. It does not matter where I am when I need to print. Just click and send, even when I am outside by the pool working... wonderful feature and again so easy to setup. I will tell you to watch the price using Amazon, because the prices go up and down on items.....I purchased it for $299.00 on Sept. 17 which included two-day shipping for free. I see it's now $412.92 with reg. shipping. Hope this helps "Awful - worst HP experience ever" First one did not work. Installation software would not work. After lengthy phone session with technician I could barely comminucate with, HP replaced the core unit only. I had to tote the replaced one to a UPS dropoff. Bought the warranty with next day replacement, which took 3.5 days. Setup software failed on the new unit too. (You have to sit through a maddening sales pitch and music until you finally reach support). Set up software could not be reset by second online support session. Printer Malfunction. On one attempt to reach support, I gave up after 2.25 hours. Toted the heavy printer to FedEx dropoff. (FedEx would not assist getting printer out of auto.) 2nd replaced core unit: the printer would set up, even wireless this time!, but then the paper jams started, first just with duplexer. On removing the jammed paper, noticed some of the paper feed parts had become loosened and fell from their positions into the bottom of the printer. One of three support calls on this, technician had me reset the printer with the parts removed. Then could not print at all without tearing paper. I'll pass on replacement number three and look for an AIO from another company. I had always recommended HP to my customers. Not any more. Even technical support says this printer has many issues. If you got a good one of these, maybe your stars were aligned! CNet technical reviewer must have gotten a cadillac version. "While a problem to setup - GREAT after that" I had to re-install VISTA as the 1st time I installed the printer software it was buggy, could not get everything to work...With a new install of OS, AND...YES this was important....a reboot after each part, printer, scan (also had to upgrade the scan software, which was cool how HP automatically gave the right software), etc....HOWEVER, even when I said I did not want all the bloated software, it was installed............ALSO, many small software items are installed under the covers, which is a real drag to remove, which is why I had to do a re-install of vista...two days (about 8hrs)...now you know why it is on sale...IF you have the time and are willing....it is a great product once it is working..............GOOD LUCK.............

What our customer's say! "Careful of SP3 for XP Pro", system was working fine uuntil we installed SP3 for XP Pro. Then lost iner-compatibility between scan, fax, copy and print. HP tech support seemed clueless and we spent several days (and more than what several replacement units would cost)and system is still not corrected. HP is "working on it" although they have fixed problem for those using Vista operating systems. We want anoperating Solution Center component back!!! Or maybe we should return unit to HP for one that will work as advertised??? "Not What I Expected", I purchased this printer September 2007 with the duplex option. First off, paper kept jamming and crumbling every time I tried to use the duplexer. Additionally, pages were printing with white lines across the paper. Tried getting technical assistance but nothing worked. I actually had to use another printer to print my final documents for my job. The final straw was when the 'carriage jam' error message kept appearing and the machine stopped working altogether. I got no help from HP who simply sent me an acknowledgment of receiving my complaint and never followed. Amazon was really good in accepting my returned item and refunding me. Bottom line, I would not recommend this printer at all. "Another Amazing HP Product", This printer is a replacement to an old HP C3180 All-in-one. I have always used HP printers and they really have never disappointed me at all. The quality is good and the prices are competitive with other brands. The C3180 I had previously just ceased to function, so I started looking for a replacement, and I found this wonderful machine. It absolutely does everything! Setup of the machine was really easy, and went on without a hitch. The printer does take a good amount of hands on assembly, but the instructions that come with the printer are quite clear and easy to understand. I didn't really find the manual for the printer to be much help though. Many people have said that it was hard to set up the wireless with the automatic DHCP that is on the machine, but it worked for me without a hitch. It told me the IP that it was using, and I just typed that into all my computers and it was connected instantaneously. I did have a problem with the controls on the machine freezing up, but that was easily fixed by downloading the latest firmware on HP's website. I also did not use the disks included, but downloaded the basic print and scan drivers from HP's website also. Most of the stuff on the full featured download for the printer were really not necessary and not worth the extra time to download. Copying and Scanning with the printer: Copying is a breeze with this machine. The ADF works flawlessly, and so does the glass flatbed. The quality of the copies just blew me away because it was so much better than any copies I have ever seen before. They were of the quality, if not better than a laser printer. My favorite part of the copy function is all the things you can manipulate. The printer has set ratios that you can use to resize pages to, and it really works great. You can also set it to make the copy lighter or darker than the original, change the DPI of the copies, and more. The speed of copying can also be changed to fast, normal, or best. Copies on the fast mode are flawless, and I imagine they are even better on the best setting. It also has a copy preview function so that you can see what is going to come out beforehand. The ADF can also handle double sided copies quite well. It is fast and efficient! The scanner works well also. I was able to scan to my computer with a USB cable, but I haven't tried it wirelessly yet. The printer comes with the IRIS OCR text converter also, so you can take a scan and convert it to editable text, which is so convenient and such a timesaver. It can scan up to 19200 DPI, which takes awhile, but the quality is outstanding. I can't believe how detailed it can scan! It also can scan to a flash drive or SD card in a PDF format, JPEG, or TIFF. I haven't been able to figure out the Digital filing yet, but I will update the review when I try it. The scanner also is used to scan pictures, and then you can edit them right on the Photosmart essential software on the printer. Faxing with the printer: This printer is also a heavy duty fax machine! It faxes color and black at a speedy 33.6K. When it is hooked to a line shared with a phone, it also rings when there is a call, and displays the caller ID. It can also print off receipts of faxes that they were sent, and if you want to, you can print off all of the sent faxes. The ADF can handle double sided faxes also. It prompts you before faxing as to if you are going to use the ADF or the glass flatbed. The fax also has all the controls of the copier portion, so you also can resize and lighten or darken faxes. The printer's onboard memory also is probably sufficient for holding about 25-30 faxes total. It also will let you set how many rings on the phone before automatically answering. Printing and other features: I have only one thing to say about the printing. WOW! The print quality is absolutely amazing. The fastest that it can print is 35PPM, and I was able to achieve that speed by using the fast draft mode. The quality was still excellent in that mode, and it is wonderful in the high quality mode. The colors are quite vivid, and the ink tanks seem to last quite awhile. I recommend getting the 88XL cartridges because they are the best deal for lowest cost per page. The printer's duplexer works great, and I haven't seen a smudge on any duplexed paper. The prints come out perfectly every time. Both trays on the printer work well, and they seem very efficient. I have all of the prints come out of tray one, and all prints for the copier and fax coming out of tray two. It also has the ability to print on envelopes, which is a huge plus since I do a lot of mailing. In the future, I may fill tray one with envelopes and lock it, and then fill tray two with paper and have all copies/faxes/prints come from that one. Overall, I give this printer a 5 star for the quality, ease of use, and pricepoint. I was originally skeptical of this printer because of the negative reviews, but I went ahead and got it. I sure am glad that I did! Great job HP! "Will not Scan to Direct Digital Filing on Small Business Server 2003", HP support confirms OfficeJet direct digital filing is incompatible with Microsoft Small Business Server 2003. Unsuccessfully tried various work arounds from the web. If this capability is important to you under Small Business Server 2003, be forewarned. "What a rip-off", There's only one thing wrong with this machine. I'll get to that in a minute. The OfficeJet L7780 is a great all-in-one, much better than the 6100 series was. Print quality is great, mechanical operation is acceptable, the power-saving features and wireless communication are very worthwhile. The printer's biggest draw is an advertised per-page cost lower than a laser printer, and much lower than the single-cartridge DeskJet printers. It's very enticing. And it might be true -- if you ever get around to using up a whole cartridge of ink. But before you get to that point, the printer gives an error message: "The following ink cartridge(s) appear to be missing or damaged." There's nothing wrong with your ink cartridges. One of them has simply been in your printer longer than HP thinks it should be. When you install a new cartridge, the printer starts a timer for that cartridge, and when the timer counts down to zero, the printer pops up the "missing or damaged" error message. And it's a hard error, too. There's no way around it, according to HP, except to replace the affected ink cartridge -- even if that cartridge is still 1/3 or 1/2 full of ink. HP was either too clever (or too STUPID, depending on your point of view) to have the printer issue a simple warning message saying, "The indicated cartridge has hit its shelf life limit," and giving you the choice to continue printing until you get around to replacing the cartridge. And HP was just too STUPID -- and inconsiderate of users -- to give the user any advance warning: "The indicated cartridge will hit its shelf life limit in two days." No, it happens suddenly, without warning, and it locks up the entire all-in-one. I really expected better than this from HP. (And then there's the issue of WHY these new-and-improved inks have such a short shelf life. Maybe HP laid off their good ink chemists and imported some cheaper ones from China.) This problem is insidious, and it's pervasive. It affects all HP inkjet printers. Searching on the web turns up several workarounds, but a user SHOULD NOT have to do any of them. Until HP releases a firmware upgrade that gets rid of this design defect, the OfficeJet L7780 gets only one star, and this is the last HP printer I will buy (I've been buying them since ThinkJet days). ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Garbage", I purchased this to replace another HP all in one that only lasted two years. It took a week to finally get the software installed on a windows XP pro system. Pay attention to other reviews that mention difficulty with installation. After intallation I have never been able to get decent prints. Consistently since day one of operation the print function has smeared and streaked basic black and white documents. Tech support from HP has been a bad joke. Trying to get them to replace the obviously defective print head (display window says "print head problem") on a machine less than 6 weeks old that has never printed a single acceptable page has been fruitless. You would think that the emails between tech support and myself are a bad joke. As an architect I have used commercial grade HP plotters for years and they are bomb proof performers. These one-for-all, be all things, officejets are consitently prematurely released Beta hardware garbage. Run the other way when thinking of buying. Update: Could not get HP tech Support to understand that I was not able to print a test page with the machine locked up in order to get a lot number from the fouled print head. Told me I was flat out of luck in more than one email. Out of frustration turned to Amazon for help on a six week old machine. Bam! Just like that brand new machine delivered the next day from Amazon. After the absolute frustration of trying to get HP to stand up for the own product, Amazon does it for them without a second thought. You cannot beat Amazon for standing behind what they sell. Problem is, I now have the same HP garbage machine that I stated with and the hell is starting all over again. Same installation nightmares that I went through before. I will give it one more try, then return it to Amazon and buy a Brother. Pay attention to the previous nightmare reviews that also had multiple new printers shipped to them only to have the same malfunctions. I'm living it. HP never again. "HP Printer Officejet Pro L7780", I have been very pleased with my new duplex wireless printer. I set it up myself - except I did get my husband to lift it onto the desktop. It sits 17 inches high, 22" across and 20" deep. But IT WORKS - and when I turned my laptop on in the other room, it prints from that too. I have had it about a month and it is suggesting I will need a new black cartridge so the ink seems to last quite a while -- I do a lot of printing (for home use.) I am well pleased. Mary in SD "Best value, best speed, low operating cost.", I've owned this printed for about a year. I was worried about all the negative reviews, but Consumer Reports stated that it was a "much better than average" printer. So I purchased one and have not been even the slightest bit disappointed since. And the cost of "per page printing" is the greatest value available. "Working great so far; refills hard to find locally", The Wireless printing is such a joy / convenience, as is the scanning function, where it will scan to jpeg or .pdf and store it on a memory card (compact flash, microsd, etc.). Prints fast. "HP L7780 AIO Printer", PROS: I like this printer. It is the third AIO printer I have had. I have this set up using the wi-fi net in my house, so all three of our computers can print to it and the only wire going to it is power. The large paper supply is great. I like the capability to use the large 88XL large ink cartridges. My previous HP 1215 had duplex printing, so this having it out of the box, and not having to buy the duplexer separate was also a plus. The printer does a good job on pictures also. CONS: Out of the box, the black/yellow print head was skipping one line. After trying the multiple things HP had me do, they are supposed to be sending me a replacement print head. Haven't seen it yet and it's been 3 weeks. It is sorta noisy, but not objectionable when it is warming up. PLUS: Amazon's Price Was among the best I found anywhere. ![]() |
