Others say...
"Wonderful grinder" I bought this grinder to replace a Capresso grinder similar to this one: Capresso 556 Stainless-Steel Burr Grinder. I was frustrated with the level of static and the amount of clogging. I have been very happy with the Breville. On the plus side: - It's quiet (a LOT quieter than the other one I had); - The coffee feeds quickly and easily into the grinder; - It grinds well (I use coarse grind for French press); - There is almost NO static at all; - It has an on-off switch that disables the start button, so I can leave it plugged in, but the plug itself has an excellent grip if I want to unplug it. On the minus side: - The capacity is somewhat less than specified, more like a quarter to a third of a pound of coffee; - The container for the ground coffee seems a bit flimsy and is somewhat oddly shaped. "Breville Ikon Burr Grinder" I make my morning coffee with a French press. When my bodum grinder started dying, I decided to get a new one. Like many other people, I hesitated between the Breville and Capresso model. Since I was more familiar with Capresso I decided to get it. However, the Capresso grinder is NOT suitable for press pots at all! Even at the coarsest setting, it came out more like the "all purpose grinds" you get at the market. I returned it immediately and got the Breville at my local Williams-Sonoma and this machine works great with my press pot. For those who are looking for a nice burr grinder but are not able to decide between the Capresso and Breville here is what I felt: 1) the Capresso grinder has a timer just like the Breville grinder. However, while the Breville has a separate "start" button that you have to press after you set the timer, the Capresso starts grinding the moment you turn the timer. 2) Both models seem to have a fairly big hopper to keep your beans in. (I don't keep my beans in the hopper so I haven't used it as a bean container but they both look big enough for anyone) 3) Cleaning for both models are similar. If you go to BB&B or Linens n things, they sell coffee brushes for about $2. Using those, cleaning is fairly easy for both models. 4) Breville does seems to have less static. For me the winning feature of Breville was that the grind container at the bottom has a top. The Capresso didn't have a top for the grind container, which probably exacerbated the problem of grind coffee flying out due to static. 5) Breville is probably not suitable for espresso machines. The finest grind isn't as fine as the grinds I got from the Capresso. So, if you are looking for a grinder mainly for espresso the Capresso would be a better choice. But, as I mentioned earlier, for a press pot or percolator, Breville may be more suitable. The only reason I am giving this grinder four starts is because I've only had it for a short time. "Outstanding, but loud." Mills perfect espresso that generates an amazing crema. Very loud and could use a longer timer than 30 seconds. "Great Grinder and great price" I bought this for espresso making and was not for sure if i should since alot of people say for espresso you need a $300 grinder but i decided to get it anyways becouse of cash funds. I am impressed with the grind and does just right with the lowerst grind setting and i actually use it to grind my normal coffee also. Get it. You won't we disapointed. "Best Grinder for Keurig "My K-Cup" Single Cup Custom Grind" Using with Breville Gourmet single cup brewer. Awesome grinder, used for solid 6-months @ no less than 4 times per day. Best feature: No Mess! There are some "flavored" or over roasted beans (oily or sticky bean coating) that will want to slightly "stick" to the removable grinds container, but I mostly use clean, medium-dark roasted Kona beans and I can honestly say that I have not once washed the catch container and it still looks like new! Really! The grinds ALL come out with a light tap when tipped into a bowl or directly into a drip brewer's basket. Also, no grinds scattered on the counter around grinder after use! Trick for single cup use: the My-K-Cup is too small to pour grinds directly from the grinder's removable container without spilling, so I use a small bowl (~4.5" diameter) with a lightweight (sharp edged) plastic spoon to scoop the grinds into K-cup after pouring grinds into bowl. Again...no Mess to clean up! I just hide the bowl in the closest cabinet for re-use over and over. The timer is not an issue for me. With it turned up all the way, it only takes one retouch of the start button to finish 5-6 1/8-cup scoops of beans. Of course for my use, I only grind one scoop of beans at a time. It is easy to grind 6-8 k-cups of coffee for my office Breville brewer also! At first you might think the grinds basket is flimsy and cheap, but in reality, this light weight design is perfect for handling while transferring grinds and the thin-wall design actually assists in emptying the container cleanly and completely when lightly tapped, without messing up your counter! I do not use this for espresso and the coarseness level I use for the "My K-Cup" is the beginning-to-middle of the "expresso" coarseness setting. Much finer than this will result in channeling of the water in the "My K-Cup" adapter during brewing and can even clog the brewing system such that your cup will take much longer to brew (and longer to cleanup also!).

What our customer's say! "Works great for ultra-fine grinding", I got this unit to grind chia seeds (the black ones which have hard shells) and it works wonderfully. Chia seeds are a little smaller than sesame seeds so many other grinders won't get a fine enough grind to grind chia seeds. "A terrific grinder!", I finally decided to replace my hateful older model Capresso grinder that I've had for about 10 years. What an improvement! My Capresso blew coffee particles ALL OVER the counter. I hated to use it because it was so messy and it was very prone to clogging which was a nightmare to take care of. This one's clean and quiet and no mention is made as to what to do if it clogs, so I'm guessing it won't. "Timer problems", I've had the unit about six months. It worked well at first and does a reasonably good job at grinding coffee, but as others have experienced, the timer has stopped working correctly. It's entirely random - 1 second, 5 seconds, 20 seconds, regardless of what it's set to. So I end up standing there having to push the button 5 or 6 times to grind enough coffee for a cup of espresso. Breville seems to have serious quality control issues. The pump on my Breville ESP8XL espresso machine, which I've also had about six months, just failed. I will not buy another Breville product. "Breville BCG450XL Ikon Grinder", The Breville 450XL is an excellent grinder. It's easy to use and provides very consistent grinds. We've had several other Conical Burr grinders over about 10 years and this is the best yet. It's very quiet and has no static dust problems in the humid climate of South Texas. I have no hesitation recommending this grinder for home use. "Perfect product!", This conical burr coffee grinder is VERY well made and produces an excellent grind. Looks good on the counter, doesn't take up much space and (probably the best thing) NO loose grind on the counter! The real test: my wife loves it! ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Makes good Coffee", The grinder is nice to use and fairly quite. Once you figure out what grinding time corresponds to the amount of coffee you want you are all set. The unit is is a little larger than expected but looks nice on the counter. there is a little coffee dust left in the tray after emptying it but it is not a problem for me there is less in this unit than other is have used. Over all I am very happy with the Grinder and would purchase it again. "This grinder met all my needs", I had been using an old Kitchen-aid grinder for 20 years. I might have bought a Kitchen-aid again, but the new ones took up too much counter space. So I selected the Breville, and found it to be a little better than the old Kitchen-aid: - It's quiet. You can actually have a conversations while it's running. - It's compact. It sits next to my coffee maker without taking too much counter space. - It's neat. It scatters grounds much less than other griders that I've used. My only complaint is that the shape of the cup is slightly awkward to pour from. - It grinds well. I don't even have to use the finest setting. "Static Mess!", This grinder does produce a consistent grind. However it also produces a huge mess! It cause the coffee to be statically charged and when the container is removed with the ground coffee, the grounds fly off of the lid in every direction. It is impossible to not create a mess. I would not buy this product again and will purchase another grinder. "Finally a grinder that works", I would probably give this grinder 4 1/2 stars. I tested this against the Capresso Infinity and a Mr. Coffee blade grinder, as well as a grocery store grinder. (1) French press. This ground French press very well, which is the reason I'm keeping it. It was coarse enough I got nearly no sediment in the cup of coffee. By contrast the Capresso ground much like the blade grinder - completely unsuitable for French press or a percolator. (2) Turkish. The grinder ground the coffee to a fine powder, above and beyond that of the store grinder and the blade. The Capresso ground a bit finer - like into talcum powder fine - but going mainly on touch, this grinder managed a fine powder suitable for Turkish, and obviously finer than espresso-grain. I think a decent grinder should be able to grind the gamut of granularity - the Breville does. If you just want one grain size, like Turkish, don't get a $100 grinder. Buy a mortar and pestle. Only cons (minor, in my opinion): * On the loud end, about the same as most grinders * You adjust the burrs by twisting the flimsy plastic bean container - making you afraid it'll break off * Timer is unnecessary, they should just have an on/off switch I like the lid on the lower bin, which prevents the grounds from flying out. Overall I would highly recommend this grinder. Based on what I've read, even the Kitchen Aid at $179 can't compare. "I love it!!", After doing a BUNCH of research, I decided to spend my $$ on this one. I really have enjoyed this grinder. My only complaints may be that I would prefer a larger hopper for the beans, and that the coffee-grounds seem to sometimes "clunk out" of the bin--missing the filter a bit. BUT--I'm sure that's mostly user-error. :) In any case, I have enjoyed this grinder immensly and would purchase another one if this one croaks. :) ![]() |
