Others say...
"like but with reservations" Overall I like the crock pot but I agree with other reviewers that the lid is an issue. It feels very fragile and I am scared to death it will break with just a tap. I also am disapointed with the bowl of the pot itself, the bottom middle slopes to the edges and is not flat, so it does not evenly brown. I am finding I am pulling out the frying pan to brown meat and then adding it to the crockpot like I have always done with other crockpots. I don't think I would spend this amount of money for this pot again. "Great Unit!!!" I have a round crock pot, so decided to get an oval pot to accomodate items like a chicken. This crock pot is much more than I was looking to purchase. I just cooked a pot roast...placed crock on stove stop (with diffuser), brown the meat, add the remaining ingredients, placed back in base unit, set heat level, set timer and left the house. When I returned to the house, the timer had completed, reset the heat to "warm" and I had a great dinner. The whole timing unit brings this unit to a whole new level. It is a fantastic purchase..especially at around $70. "Almost caused a fire!" I purchased this product over a year ago and thought that it was great. worked beautifully and the dials up front are very easy to use. I use it on our motorhome. Over the labor day weekend I smelled an electical type burning smell. I looked at the crock pot and there was smoke coming from the front panel. I turned it off and restarted it later. The smoke and smell started again. I finished the meal and tossed the crock pot in the trash. Now looking for another brand since I no longer trust Rival. "Bon Appetit liked it" I got this slow cooker based in part on a review from the April 2008 issue of Bon Appetit. They said it was the best "deluxe" slow cooker, noting that they liked it because you could brown meat in the pot on the stove (absolutely essential for slow cooker cooking), it had a count-down timer and an automatic warm setting when the cooking was done, and the pot is dishwasher safe. Sure, it could have a glass lid, but why do you need to see the food? I mean, if it's on, then it's cooking, whether you can see it or not! "no replacement parts" The unit is great but a waste of money since Rival doesn't have any replacement lids, nor do they intend to. It's a crockery lid, and proved VERY fragile. Now I have a useless crockpot and no chance to replace the broken lid. Would NEVER buy a Rival unit again.

What our customer's say! "great slow cooker", The Rival VersaWare Slow Cooker is an improvement to other slow cook pots. You can saute in the same pot. It is versatile, easy to clean and cooks thoroughly. "There's no "slow" in this slow cooker.", Even on low, cooksway too fast. Has holes in the lid and all the steam escapes out and food over cooks and is dried out. "Already need the Ceramic Insert!", I LOVED this slow cooker until after the 5 or 6th use, the Insert started cracking as soon as I put it on the stove. I am very careful with my appliances and did everything as instructed, so there was absolutely no excuse to why this happened. Now I am looking to purchase the Insert so that I could use it again! Other than the Insert cracking, this was the best cooker that I ever had! (And I have 3 more brands!) I use these Slow Cookers at least twice per week. A great way to feed your family when life gets busy! "Outstanding product - works great!", After purchasing a cheaper crock pot for my son away at college, then reading the poor reviews, I did quite a bit of research and bought him this one. He brought it home for summer vacation and fortunately for me, left it here for the time being when he returned to school. We have used it several times, for traditional crock pot cooking and for browning meats on the stove first then the slow cooking. It works great for all the uses it is advertised for. It's really nice to be able to brown a roast as it should be, before cooking it slowly for hours. The timer is very handy also. You don't have to worry that your dinner is overcooking if you don't get home in time. The versatility of use and nice design makes this a great crock pot to own and use. I am really glad I picked this one and would not trade it for any other crock pot. "Defective material", Received this crockpot as a gift. Used it three times. Followed all the instructions/directions. On the fourth use, I noticed the stoneware was cracked. Called the company and they said the warranty did not cover it because it was an "old model" manufactured three years earlier, based on some code # on the plug. So, my complaints are poor materials and poor customer service. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Excellent crock pot", Used it a hand full of times now, and it works as advertised. It might be a *bit* more pricey than other options, but the timer built into it and the ability to throw the pot on the stove for browning your meat makes it all worth it. Seems nice and solidly built, too. Highly recommended! "Four stars with reservations", I have only cooked in this crock once since it arrived. I made my usual split pea soup, cooked on low. The soup was better than ever, but I did have a couple of issues. First, the temp. reached over 200 degrees on low as registered by an instant read thermoneter. A bit of the soup burned around the bottom edges of the pot, and after cleaning by hand and then again in the dish washer, the stoneware had a white stain inside. I tried vinegar too, but could not remove the stain.I'm trying another recipe favorite today, so I'll see how it goes. Sandi "Rival Crock-Pot", I purchsed this as a gift and had it gift wrapped and sent directly to my sister. She was thrilled and couldn't get over the gift wrap. It was a beautiful blue cloth bag and ribbon, a definite keeper she said. "Pretty Cool!!!", I love how you can brown your meat and cook in one pot. But like another reveiwer mentioned, it would be nice to have a lid that was see through. Because you always wonder how it is looking. I love my crock pot. "Great Crockpot", We have owned this crockpot for over 6 months now and use it on average once a week. It is a great quaility item and we haven't had any issues. We like the simple programming and have used it to brown meat in the same pan. We aren't sure why so many people are giving the item low stars. If you drop the lid, why wouldn't you expect it to chip or break? Its STONEWARE, not metal. Don't blame the product for your carelessness. If you dropped a dinnerplate and it cracked, would you blame the produce or the person dropping the product? We have two crockpots that we bought at the same time and after using each a couple of times, we never use the "other" brand unless cooking for the masses. They both cost around the same yet the this crockpot seems to be made of quality materials and doesn't feel "cheap". I find it odd that people have said in reviews that they "wouldn't brown meat in it" for whatever reason, but never tried. How can you give a produce a bad review when you haven't even tried using it. To me it seems that those people have an axe to grind. If you want a crockpot where you pour in a Marie Calendar's crock pot meal and call that cooking, go buy a walmart piece of junk special. If you want a crockpot that you can actually do some real cooking in, this pot is for you. Just to set the record straight, this is a great quality crockpot that works as advertised. ![]() |
