Others say...
"Love this dutch oven! " I've been using dutch ovens for a long time - I cook with them regularly. So when I saw this one I was eager to try it, especially given its price. I am happy to report that I've used it many times, and it has been perfect for our family's needs. Quality product, heavy and well designed. I'm thinking about buying several for Christmas presents. "Lodge 3 qt. Dutch oven" MON 14JUL08 1) am not a professional food preparation person, nor am I exactly "chef material"--if you get my drift. 2) know what I like; own some Calphalon, Le Creuset, et al. "high-end" cookware. 3) like to compare/contrast/look around--from time-to-time, in re: new/other products. 4) Lodge appears to be a viable product. 5) the difference between a sharp knife & a dull one isn't much--in terms of metal, but is a lot in terms of efficacy. You pay a lot more for just a little more; but it's that "little more" than can achieve the results that you like so much. With these thoughts, please proceed. Rec'd Lodge 3 qt. enameled Dutch oven today. My "issue" is that the lid does not fit tightly--& that's by design--something no previous review indicated. The lid has three cast ~1/16" standoffs @ "noon", "4" & "8" which are designed to allow the hot cooking gases, vapors & liquids to escape freely, rather than build-up until enough pressure is generated to lift the cast-iron lid--or to "surprise" the lid-liftee; that is, unless the cook is tuned-in to what is happening, i.e. cooking, & actually tends to her/his business. Personally, I want to have control over those things under my control. I do NOT want to be protected from myself. Le Creuset French (Dutch?) ovens have FLAT rims & recesses. Yes, just like on your car radiator, the temperature will increase w/ the pressure & it is easier to scorch & burn--but also faster to cook (as in a pressure cooker) when the interior pressure is elevated. For me, a tight-fitting lid is what I want. Lodge has a higher-end line (maybe more than one). Not taking the time this yr. to purchase, use & review. Oh yes, & BTW: Le Creuset does not make a 3 qt. enameled cast iron oven. No disrespect to Lodge, but it looks like I've talked myself into a Le Creuset purchase--again. "Sadly Disappointed" Prior to purchasing this item I went to the Lodge website to research the product as the Amazon information on it is quite sparse. The Lodge site is very informative on the construction of their cast-iron product line. They even proffered that the paint used on their enameled products was imported from France, begging a comparison with Le Crueset, of course. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that the Dutch Oven had actually been manufactured in CHINA. I feel that Lodge is somewhat disingenuous in their promotion of the enameled product line by not stating that they do not make these products here in the U.S. (Amazon shares some blame here also) The Dutch Oven is an attractive piece of cookware, but concerns about what additives the Chinese may use in the painting process exist. I would like to see an independent labratory analysis of this cookware to prove that the enameling process is lead-free. "We love it!" My wife has made several dishes in our dutch oven, and everything seems to come out great in it. Several people have mentioned the issue where there is a temperature limit for putting this pot in the oven because of the plastic cover handle, but we've yet to encounter a recipe where we'd need to go over the limit anyway. If I ever do want to, I'll just remove the handle and make my own. This is a great product to get into using a Dutch oven from a great manufacturer without spending a ton of money. "Lodging my Opinion" The 3-quart Lodge Enamel Dutch Oven is a welcome addition to our kitchen. We got a larger one at Christmas--and like it. However, this smaller model gives us flexibility that my wife Carolyn and I enjoy. We use it often!

Lodge Enameled Cast-Iron 3-Quart Dutch Oven, Island Spice
Why I buy this one ? - Porcelain surface eliminates the need to season - Tightly fitting lid seals in moisture - Superior heat distribution and retention - Two layers of porcelain enamel are chip resistant - Easy clean up It's better to buy this one too...

What our customer's say! "Why should you pay the price of Le Crueset?", I own a 7.5 qt. Le Creuset bouillabaisse pot and love it, but I wanted something smaller for everyday and small jobs without paying Le Creuset prices. I took a chance and got the Lodge 3 qt pot. I love it! Performance and maintenance are identical. The Lodge cast iron seems to be thicker and consequently scorches less easily than the Le Creuset. For 1/4 the price it is a no brainer. All we need now is for Lodge to make more pieces and colors available. "Lodge Enameled Cast-Iron 3 Qt Dutch Oven", This is a fairly good dutch oven for the price. You just need to baby it a little. My experience after a year of regular use according to the instructions included with the pan - Pros: cooks evenly, holds the heat, nice size, attractive Cons: lid does not sit tightly on pan (good for slowly reducing, but not for retaining moisture in the oven) stains easily, enamel cannot tolerate the heat of browning meat, after a while in use cannot be soaked because tiny enamel faults start to rust - especially around the rim I brown meat and vegetables in another pan, and then make the stew/braise in this pan if I want a long, slow reduction of the liquid. I do not think it equal to a LeCreuset, but the price seems fair for what it is. "Lodge Enameled Cast-Iron 3 QT Dutch Oven, Island Spice", Totally love this product. Color is fantastic and I've made some great recipes in this dutch oven. Recommend it and give it 100% rating! It's not the biggest dutch oven out there, but for smaller quanties, this fits the bill. PS I also have the bigger size one too in the same color and also love it! "This pan is wonderful", This pan is wonderful. I use it every day: for frying, stewing, etc. I love cast iron but I want a pan I can soak. "Heats Well, But Stains Easily", Well, I wanted to believe these would be as good as it's French Competition. It heats well, that's fine, but I find that food sticks, and it stains very easily. I always have to use a scour pad after use to get it looking clean. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "island spice cutie!! (and inexpensive!!)", this is just about the cutest thing i have in my kitchen! it's a beautiful color (i also have the larger 6qt dutch oven in blue, and as beautiful as that is, the island spice is even prettier!), and it's much smaller than your ordinary gonzo dutch oven. i've used it for small batches of pasta sauce, and making risotto (PERFECT for risotto, where you want really even heat control--since we're cooking on electric, risotto really needs enamel cast iron!). would also be really good for smaller braises, e.g. cutting recipes in half! and, seriously, the price cannot be beat. i cannot BELIEVE that they are offering enamel cast iron at this price. it works amazingly well, and frankly how many of us can afford le creuset? i am lucky to have DRU enamel pieces handed down from my grandmother, but the collection is not complete, and i needed to add my own dutch ovens. also, i plan to buy a casserole from lodge, but having already spent $80 on these two pieces i must wait responsibly for a while. (But, $80 for two enamel CI pieces is just incredible!!) "Great for cooking for two", This dutch oven is everything I hoped it would be. Although smaller than the typical dutch oven, the thermal mass of this item still does a great job of maintaining even heat throughout the pot, and therefore, results in cooking performance comparable to the larger dutch ovens. It is now a pleasure to be able to cook for just my husband and me without having five pounds of leftovers to store, refrigerate, and eat for 2-3 days more. AND, it cleans up so easily you would think it was teflon coated! I just love it and use it every week. "Needs to be a "Watched Pot"", I'm a great fan of Dutch Oven cooking and find my 6 qt Lodge Enamel pot indispensable for company or making large meals. I purchased this item to have a smaller version for "just the three of us". I am disappointed that the lid does not fit as tightly as advertised and because of that requires more watching in the oven. It's OK, but not what I've come to expect from Lodge. "Just as good as Le Creuset", Let me begin by stating that I am the proud owner of over one dozen pieces of Le Creuset, and they are fabulous. My in-laws asked me to purchase a few Lodge Enamel pieces for them, and after an initial inspection, I was blown away by their quality and value. Simply gorgeous. To the untrained eye it would be difficult to differentiate between the two brands. As for performance, I conducted a side-by-side evaluation. Simultaneous preparations of cassoulet, one in a 3 QT Lodge Dutch oven and another in a 3.5 QT Le Creuset French oven. The results - indistinguishable. Clean-up was identical. Bottom line; I could have purchased the same performance for 1/4 of the price. "Great all purpose pot", I have had my 3 qt. oven for about 3 months and it has performed perfectly. I use it several times a week. At one point I thought it had a lightly stained area but it disappeared with the next use. Maybe heating it up? All I need now is a 6 quart oven..... ![]() |
