Others say...
"don't judge a book by it's cover" When this came yesterday, the interior box was in very rough shape. The vacuum (dyson 21 stowaway) had obviously been packed in a used box - and we all know what that means. I very, very carefully checked the machine for signs of use, considering that I had purchased it new. There were a few minor scuffs on the power head, but overall, it appeared to be brand new. With some misgivings (I had waited a while to purchase this), I finally started it up and gave it a try. This vacuum works great. I am very pleased with the performance. The hose is sturdy, the cord tucks away (and it is long enough for me to go across an entire room), it pushes comfortably without a huge effort, and the wand is great for cleaning the bathroom fan vent, etc. It fits under the bed with little effort (unlike my upright). It pulls dirt just fine. I went from wanting to send it back RIGHT NOW to not wanting to part with it, ever. It works great. I would buy this product for friends (if they wouldn't get insulted that I gave them a vacuum, I mean, c'mon.). I really like it. I can't wait to clean my car next! "Great Vacuum for Hardwood Floors" I was looking for a vacuum for our hardwood floors. We have a 2300 sq. foot home and the only carpet is on the stairs. I purchased a Miele vacuum for $1200.00 and it did an okay job. I'm sure the Miele would do a bang up job on carpets but their floor tool is lacking. This Dyson has a few problems such as it does not follow you, it viers to the left. I'm constantly trying to keep it from banging into walls and getting it unstuck from furniture corners. The wand also spins and trys to kink. Since I don't use the stow away feature there is no place to hook the wand. Other than that the vacuum power is great. It even picks up the little tiny black dog hairs that the Miele would leave behind. I like not having to buy bags. With the few problems that it has, I would still recomend this vacuum. "Powerful vacuum, but the flaws are too numerous" My biggest problems: 1) the bare floor attachment is the worst I have ever used. Our Newfoundland dog (think long black hair) sheds a lot and this vacuum really struggles to pick the hair up. The $30 Swiffer Vac we have does a better job - no exaggerating. The opening is almost completely surrounded by bristles, making it hard to suck anything, much less hair, up with the attachment. 2) The extendable wand is awkward. I am used to having a short handle on the end of a cannister vac. Stick a brush attachment and cleaning a sofa, or a car is an easy operation. Fully compressed, the Dyson wand is still almost two feet long. Suddenly, vacumming has become a two-handed operation. 3) The power cord is too short. Not short in that "kind of annoying" way, but in the "adds significant time to the task" way. ------ If I were only using this on carpets I would only be mildly disappointed with this model. As is, it needs to be returned. If only they would have spent as much time on the small functionality quirks as they did on getting the hose to wrap around it for storage (something you'll likely never do after the first time anyway). My main suggestion is to spend some hands-on time with it before making the leap. "OK but has some flaws" I do not own this model but a very similar one. My cons are: 1. This vacuum is very heavy compared to others. 2. The clip at the back to hold an attachment (or the wand when you are vacuuming and want to move something before continuing) is weak. I have given up on trying to put the wand there when I need to move a piece of furniture or something off of the floor because it falls over every time and I don't want to collapse the wand to clip it while I move something then have to extend the wand again. 3. The extendable wand can be tricky if not locked into place. (This is why I do not collapse it until I am done.) 4. For whatever reason, when changing between the carpet tool and hardfloor tool, I manage to pinch some skin on my hand or finger every time. 5. When you are done and you wind the hose around the vacuum (as shown on the picture here) the clip to hold the wand into place isn't good and so the wand may slip out while you are carrying it if you bump the hose. Pros: 1. I like the bagless. 2. Very good at picking up pet hair. 3. The air that comes out of it IS clean and does not have that vacuum cleaner smell. For me, the cons outweigh the pros. I had a Miele before and I am considering going back to Miele. It is a bit disheartening to spend all of this money on a vacuum and then it has so many flaws. If you are considering this vacuum, please go somewhere where you can try it first and try collapsing and extending the wand, putting the wand in the clips, and so on. And be sure you can deal with the weight. "Highly recommend for hard-floors and light carpet homes" I'm very satisfied with this vacuum. I have a small, all hard floors (tile, wood, vinyl) home. This vacuum has SUPERB suction power, so make sure you pick up all those little things it's not supposed to be sucking up - coins, paper clips, etc. - because it will suck them up. I find the cable length just fine. Unless you live in an unfurnished warehouse, chances are you do need to stop to maneuver around furniture and reposition the canister, etc. To think you should never need to replug it in is just unrealistic. Same for the hose. It's made of perfectly fine quality plastic and it maneuvers fine for me as well as the whole unit that follows me easily with a gentle pull. The accessories attach perfectly fine to the base and nothing falls off like I've read others say. I even had to pull a little hard to get one out the first time I used it. The floor tool moves along very easily and it picks up from the edge amazingly well. It has a "bumper" so it doesn't damage your furniture even though it does pick up dirt all the way on the edge of the wall or corner - must be the strong suction power. It has a foot-accessible button to turn on or off the brush - on for carpet, off for hard floor. Everything is very easy to figure out how to put together. The extension wand "clicks" as you extend or collapse it to ensure it's in place. It will collapse if you haven't clicked it to extend it - it can't read your mind. The instructions are also VERY easy to figure out even though it doesn't have words - again, like I read others comment on. It's also super easy to empty out and since the receptacle is washable, you could even add water before emptying to ensure no particles go into the air. I empty it out outside of my home with no problems at all - I'm allergic to dust. The fact that it needs no replacement filters or bags ever is a huge plus for me. I would highly recommend this to anyone with hard-floors only or even some light carpeting home. I've owned a couple of cheaper vacuums before - electrolux stick and dirt devil upright - and nothing compares to this.

What our customer's say! "Very Disappointed :(", I purchased a Dyson Stowaway Canister Vacuum. It's not really all that it is cracked up to be, and you are pretty much just paying for the name. The suction isn't the greatest. I find myself repeatedly going over areas several times to collect up all of the dirt. It works great on carpets, but on hardwood floor and ceramic tile, it's useless! Yes, it's pretty, and yes, the no-bag feature is a bonus, but overall performance, it wont be on my Christmas list any more! Even the hose doesn't stay in place when you coil it up for storage and it's very awkward and heavy to carry. "Pass from the Dyson DC21", I always wanted a Dyson canister vac so when this one had a price drop I jumped at the chance. First, I have hardwood floors throughout 90% of my house; so how much could I love it....not much. There suction is weak at best and the floor tool is poorly designed. I then sent back and went a local vacuum store and purchased a Miele Antares S4210. What a difference in design, suction, and quality. Pass on the Dyson and go w/ the Miele. You will not be sorry. "Best Vacuum to purchase", Like this vacuum so much that I bought one for each of my daughters. Great suction, no bags to buy, stows away - and canisters are best design - uprights can't get under furniture and are heavy. Dysons are expensive but really get stuff clean! I will never go back. "I love it", I owned the Dyson DC5 when I lived in the uk but when I moved to California I only had carpet in two rooms and so opted for a cheaper vacuum cleaner. After 3 years of having to dust the house on a daily basis I decided enough was enough and bought the DC21. It is great..better than the DC5 and just in a total different league to what I had. Now I vacuum everything, piano, computers, ceilings and I don't have to do any dusting again for about two weeks..it's amazing. I have realied that I have just been re-distributing the dust for the past three years. I love this vacumn cleaner. It is small and neat. I have found the cable, although on the short side, it reaches everywhere I just have to change the sockets more regularly. The dusting tools are great. The only downside I have found so far is the fact that it is difficult to dust at mid height level due to the stiff hose at the top end. That is a minor issue though so I'm leaving it at 5 stars. Love it, love it, love it. You won't believe the amount of stuff that comes up from your carpets. "Great for pet hair.", I have five small dogs, two of which are chihuahuas, so I end up using this little machine every day. The pros far outweigh the cons which is why it got five stars from me. Nothing is perfect, but for the price and the size, this vacuum is wonderful. We have hardwood floors in most of our house and this picks up everything . . . everything. Be sure you don't have things laying around that shouldn't be sucked up because this will get them. Pros: Very high suction. It will get whatever is around it so vacuuming is prety easy which is always a plus. Especially if you have to do it every day. It's size makes it great for storing. It doesn't take up nearly as much space as some of the bigger models, but it's more powerful than nearly any vacuum I've ever used. It rolls well on hard floors. It's not as great on carpet, but on our floors, it glides along perfectly and moves around furniture very easily. It comes with almost any attachment you could need. I've just purchased some other attachments, but you really don't need them. It comes with a little mini brush that's great for furniture. Of course, like with anything, there are cons. The cord is short. You will have to unplug this in every room unless you live in a very small home. The attachments, while great, don't lock in so they do come off occasionally. It's not as good on carpet as it is on hardwood. But for some reason, it works really, really well on furniture. I can't figure it out, but it's fine for us because we just don't have that much carpet. All in all, this is a great little machine for the price. It does what it's supposed to and I've been using it every day for over a year and it is still working just as well now as it did the day I took it out of the box. There are a lot of expensive vacuums in my family. Some of them cost well over a thousand dollars and I'd put my little Dyson up against them any day of the week. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "You can't please everyone all the time, but...", ...the DC21 is an incredible machine. What a wonderful "better mousetrap"! First impressions, pros and cons are very similar to what I've read here and elsewhere: Pros... - Simply incredible suction. This coming from a discriminating engineer, who honestly, had no idea what an "air watt" is, but I know now, and I like 'em! I had just vacuumed the week before with a new Eureka unit marketed to have "60% more suction than Dyson", maybe only 600sf of carpet mind you, and emptied the Dyson container 3 times. Not a lot of carpet fuzz, either, like I was afraid of based on hearing about how stiff the beater brissles are. No, it was mostly light dust and gritty dirt. Then, the wood floors. With the included hard floors tool, they were cleaned MUCH more thoroughly with the Dyson, contributing even more bin-fulls to my earthen bounty. Bravo! - Exhaust air has absolutely NO odor. Previous "HEPA" units I had used, both bagged and bagless, new or old, would always leave areas with that dingy, musky "vacuum" smell. Clearly indicitave of the Dyson root cyclone hype actually being substantive. As in, seriously a new and improved mousetrap, people! This is my favorite feature. I've got allergies so bad there are pictures of me in medical text(s) from my allergy testing. That said, I can say there is nothing even close to matching what this unit accomplishes in the realm of filtration. Also, I design healthcare (hospitals, operating rooms) HVAC for a living, so I KNOW filtration! Bravo again, Dyson! - Though it took some time to get used to the truck/trailer attitude of a non-upright, having the "remote" brush head/wand was a pleasure getting used to. Much easier to get around/under things than an upright, IMHO. - Emptying. Of course it's dirty when you empty it. It's called dirt, which is... dirty! Emptying is no different than the other bagless unit I've previously owned. To minimize getting black lung, empty it outdoors, don't dump it on yourself, don't stand down-wind, and all is well! Small price to pay to not fuss with bags. - Love how the separate power head allows you to get in lots of places an upright simply can't reach. Did I already mention this? - Extend-able wand. It's sturdy-gauge extruded aluminum and thus really, really built to last, which I think is why it's been reported a bit difficult to fully extend. Give it time, folks! I bet it will "wear in" and get easier with use. Again, small price to pay for what you get, namely serious durability! Cons: - The fact that the wand attachments must connect to the rigid, bulky section of condensed wand does limit the "flexibility" of the assembly, but on the other hand, you can reach cobwebs, miniblinds, ceiling fans and other such out-of-reach places, which would be difficult or impossible to do otherwise. Having either option would have been ideal (removable wand), but that would in turn create another path for air leaks and another electrical connection for the powered beater brush. Dyson made a judgement call and naturally it wasn't going to please everyone. - Short cord. What's another 10 feet of cord going to hurt? If it's a voltage drop issue, maybe there's something to be said for that, as vac cords already do get quite warm from electrical resistance, and if you notice, the DC21 cord is relatively thin. Going a full larger wire gauge size to make the cord longer would likely add some serious bulk to a unit many already consider on the heavy side. Going longer with the thin cord may have the potential to start a fire or not deliver proper (and necessary) voltage to the unit under load. As I see it, no big deal, it's not supposed to be a central vac installation. Get an extension cord if it really bothers you, and as others have done. The instructions explicitly state that extension cords are not to be used, but again, they're doing business in the 21st century, and thus are also in the business of not getting sued... so if you use an extension cord and start a fire or melt your vac motor, you were warned, and if you're reading this, you were warned twice! - Hose soft and prone to collapsing. I really don't know about this one. C'mon Dyson, this really gets on my nerves, though it only happened once thus far, but I don't think it should happen at all. Maybe I just need a bit more "can vac" practice?! All in all, it gets 4 stars. It does the job it is intended to do, clean the snot (dust and dirt, really) out of stuff, does this task EXCEEDINGLY well, and as many have attested, on a level not readily matched by other models. But really not a good excuse I can think of for the shoddy hose quality, and though I'm not nearly as informed as Dyson on the subject, had I been working as his engineer, I would have pushed to have the extendable wand detachable for flexibility of using hand tools. Also, it's an expensive unit for most people, but believe me, a lot of associated R&D and risk has paid a dear price for such a great design, and the results speak for themselves. Worth every penny, even at full price. All in all, do yourself a favor, get a Dyson! And especially if you're able to find a great deal like I did... "Wrong Wand", We had high expectations for this vacuum, and it may be a great vacuum for carpeted areas, but since our home is all hardwood flooring, it doesn't satisfy our needs. We like the bagless canister and sturdy polycarbonate construction, but the expandible wand is over-engineered for hard flooring, too bulky and ineffective, with the hard floor attachment installed. Our (Fein) shop-vac consistently outperforms it in its ability to pick up all forms of debris. The wand is so bulky it's near impossible to raise it above eye level for cleaning various trim pieces and windowsills, et. al. I see that Dyson has introduced an "All Floors" bagless canister, but for $750!? There's really nothing wrong with this little machine, if we could get a different, less bulky wand that works on hard flooring... "None above", After spending a few months looking around for a new vacuum, the decision fell on the Dyson DC21. It is amazing! I spend some time looking at the other products listed on [...] and although they like the Hoover and others, I could not justify buying anything else than the Dyson based on total cost of ownership. Compared to others and reading the reviews this was simply the one that had the least problems over time. Pros: hardwood and carpet is just second to none the nice easy wrap up makes it easy to store Long Warrenty and according to other reviews no issues to mention Easy to empty Cons: The single problem i have is the final hook for the hose when wrapped up. it slips out easily and you have to put it back in. Hard to explain but rolled up around the vacuum it does not hold tight at the very last hook. One very happy customer and found a great price here at Amazon. "Machine does NOT suck!", And I do mean that in a negative way. This is the animal hair Dyson, and on bare floors, it won't even pick up dust, much less cat hair. I am very disappointed. I have "troubleshot" everything, and there is just no sucking power for this machine. I might as well get out my old corn broom and sweep. Most people gripe about the engineering and design of this model. Well, I would not care if it looked like it was designed by Rube Goldberg. I expect it to suck up a segment of a small dried leaf. Zippo. Nadda. Stay away from this machine. I have no more time to waste to figure out why it will not do what it says it is supposed to do. "Terrific Vacuum. Money well spent", I've been a Kenmore canister lover since the mid 1970's. My first one lasted 15 years which is why I kept buying them. Over the years, they seem to last less and less time. I just bought one last week and after 1 spin around the house, I decided to take it back. I wasn't planning on a Dyson, nor was I planning to spend $500 but after the demonstration and hearing the 5 year warranty, I took it home. WOW!!! I've NEVER had a vaccum that works this well. It's easy to manuever, fits under low clearance, quiet, and best of all, picked up my white cats fur in one swoop. OK, so $500 is a bit of cash for a vacuum, but I spent $350 on the Kenmore. For another $150.... I get to enjoy vacuuming. Well worth it folks. Go get one! ![]() |
