"Lid is poorly attached; temperature retention very good.", My drive to work each morning is 30 minutes. I was looking for a mug that would reasonably retain a nice warm drinking temperature for the entire commute, and one that was Stainless Steel on the inside.

Dissatisfied with plug-in mugs after trying 5 different ones, because they all failed within 6 months, I resorted to looking for a passive mug.

I ordered a Thermos Nissan from Amazon and while it was in shipment I bought a Starbucks mug for $19.95. (Both are 16oz mugs)

The following review compares the heat retention ability of the Thermos to the Starbucks merely for something to compare the Thermos to as the Starbucks' heat retention ability has proven to be adequate for my commute. I also did a leakage test.

First the Temperature retention:

I heated water to 170 degrees in two identical glass pitchers; then I poured the water into the mugs. Every 10 minutes for 30 minutes I took the temperature of the water in the mugs, opening the lid drink access door, only to check the temperature of the liquid, then quickly closing it.

The Thermos won this test; you can decide how relevant the small difference in heat retention is.

Other Considerations:

1. The Thermos has a snap into place lid that fits snug when the mug is cold, but merely adequate when the mug is heated.

2. The mug fits nicely into my Acura TL's drink holder, as I believe it would in most any.

I then subjected the Thermos mug to a "tipped over" test. (Mug is Full)

First: Slowly tipped over as if your hand lightly brushed against it while it was on your desk.

The Thermos leaked at a rate of a tablespoon per 10 seconds while laying on it's side.

Second: Rapidly tipped over as if you quickly reached for the phone at work and hit the mug fairly hard.

The Thermos' lid came off spilling the contents.

Third: For the third test I attempted to lift a full mug by it's lid; simulating retrieval from a deep coffee holder. This test DID NOT take into consideration the friction developed by a drink holders rubber 'grippers' that is installed in most drink holders.

The Thermos' lid came off but not until the mug had actually come off the floor surface I was using; spilling the contents. (Presumably different lids from mug to mug will have different gripping characteristics)

Conclusion: I was pleased with the Thermos' ability to keep my drink hot on my 30 minute drive, but felt the lid wasn't firmly attached enough to be in a car nor on my desk. I additionally felt the lid's rate of leakage when closed, was unacceptable.




"Expensive Piece Of Junk", Just got this thing for hubby for work...he didn't even get out the door on first use before the lid popped off when he rested his thumb on the top edge! What a shame! He loves his Thermos Work Series 40 oz. thermos as it keeps things very hot for a long time...best he has ever had, but this thing that passes for a travel mug is a disaster for Thermos. I have no doubt that this model gets lots of returns and complaints.

The other thing that worried me was the fact this travel mug is so light! This thing weighs less than a single piece of my 18/10 stainless flatware! It felt more like an aluminum alloy than stainless steel. It doesn't look like stainless on the inside either, but that might just be because it is unpolished. Still, I would've expected some heft to stainless steel and this thing is light as a feather, which means it would be prone to easily tipping as this thing is tall and slender.

Two suggestions to Thermos for improvement would be to change the flimsy rubber seal to a cup-conforming, gripping silicone flange, such as is on my Lang ceramic travel mug...it grips very, very well and in fact I have a little difficulty getting the lid off that one. However, ceramic isn't suitable for hubby's line of work as it would soon be broken. The other is to add some weight to the bottom of the cup to make it more stable.

Hopefully we will have better luck with Thermos' spill-proof model, because this thing is going back!

"Great Insulation, but leaks :(", very very good with hot stuff, i prepared the coffee in the morning and forgot it and trying to drink it after 6, i found it remained very warm, not hot.

Bad cover, I dont think the rubber ring will live, and it leaks.

So this is optimum for someone who drinks his beverage throughout the day

"Keeps it hot, but...", This mug deserves 5 stars for its ability to keep liquids hot for a very long time. It is attractive and easy to clean. I was disappointed with my purchase, however, because:
1) The lid is really not leak-proof. It's even an exaggeration to call it leak-resistant. You must carry the mug fully upright if you don't want your coffee to leak out of the top (and onto your clothes, shoes, or the floor).
2) The drinking hole is too small. Because Thermos didn't provide a small opening somewhere else on the lid to mitigate the effects of the vacuum seal, you can only take tiny sips of your drink at any given time. It's virtually impossible to actually *drink* from it. I've resorted to pouring my coffee into a porcelain coffee cup, which defeats the whole purpose of this mug. I would have been better off just buying a true thermos.
3) It doesn't really hold 16 ounces of liquid, especially considering the leakiness of the lid.



"Top Heavy, topples over easily", I like that it is slim enough to fit in a regular cup holder and the handle is nice and comfortable, but it makes the cup topple over easily.

"Be prepared for HOT coffee...", OK so I'm used to my old insulated mug keeping my coffee pretty hot but when my coffee was so hot that I had a hard time drinking it before noon I realized that this was a really good mug. I have subsequently had to alter the way I make my coffee so I can drink my coffee at a nice temp earlier because there is no cooling for at least 4-5 hours. This is a nice looking mug, easy to clean and is for the most part spill-free. If you do totally tip it on it's side it will leak but it does give you a few seconds before it starts to dribble out of the drinking spout. I've had many comments on how nice my mug is and they've all asked where I've gotten it. I would highly recommend it.
