"Plastic Inside - Not Stainless"
This kettle has a plastic interior. Although the heating element is under a stainless bottom -- most of the kettle interior is plastic. Moreover the lid is stainless on the outside and plastic on the inside!

I bought the black model. A colleague of mine has a white model that is stainless on the inside.

I plan to return this product!

"Not reliable"
The kettle's appearance is nice. It has high power and boils fast. Due to design of the lid the water is tightly covered so there is less evaporation.
Here are the problems.

1) The stainless floor becomes spotted and uneven really fast (faster than with my previous Braun kettle).

2) On my first unit power switch was malfunctioning. It took me 2-3-4 attempts before I could start it. I replaced the kettle with a new one and had the very same problems.

The bottom line.
If you decide to buy, don't do it online. Buy at some place where you can easily replace the kettle if the first (second, third etc.) one is defective.

I decided to return this kettle and buy Braun for the same price.

Update 08/08/2008
After half a year I decided to give it another try and bought a new black Krups Kettle from Bad Bath And Beyond again. I hoped that they produced a new batch with the known defect fixed. Nothing has improved. The third kettle is also defective in exactly the same way - power switch doesn't work properly and turns the kettle off several seconds after turning on.

"Excellent kettle"
I've been using this kettle at least once a day, but often more, for the last three years. It heats the water fast. It's very easy to heat only the amount you need - one scale is marked in cups and the other in ml, so even if you are heating water for a recipe you don't waste elctricity heating more than you need. You can see the scale from either side, so it doesn't matter if you're left or right-handed. I like that the kettle lifts off the base and you don't have to unplug it - my last electric kettle (admittedly almost 20 years old) had to be replaced because of the wear and tear on the cord from being plugged in and unplugged. The auto-off feature works well.

"Faulty switch"
I received this kettle for Christmas. After using it a few times, it started turning off a few seconds after I turned it on. If I turned it on again, it worked. I wrote to customer service, mentioning I had read a couple of other reviews that complained of a faulty switch. All I got in return was information on how to return it under warranty. I decided to take it back to the store and exchange it for another one, in hopes I would be luckier with the second. The first time I tried to turn it on, it turned itself off. I will be returning it and trying a different brand. When it worked, it was nice to use, but two faulty switches in a row is too much for me.

"In a word...plastic"
Smelled and tasted of plastic. Cheap thin plastic seems to be the reason. I sent back and purchased the Braun in black. Lived in England for years and only electric kettles used there, never had that problem.

What our customer's say!

"Great--Couldn't Be Better", It looks great.
Has a quality fit-and-finish.
Functions with ease.
Does exactly what it should.
Perfect!

"Plastic smell doesn't go away", This kettle does indeed impart a plastic taste to the water, and I could not get it to go away. I filled my kettle with water and boiled it every day for a week, and between boilings I let water soak overnight to try to get rid of the plastic smell. Although the smell did improve after the first couple boilings, it never went away and I am going to return it. I've had other brands of plastic kettle that did not have this problem, and for that matter most coffee makers are plastic and do not have this problem, so Krups must be doing something strange in their plasticizing process.

"Yes, it does smell", I didn't buy this through Amazon, but from a local retailer. I have to say that mine does have a chemical smell that even the pre-use boiling method did NOT remove. The smell is like some plastic solvent or manufacturing agent-- definitely chemical but not horrible. I can see how some would find it offensive; but I don't think it's dangerous.

And I live in NYC where the water is one of the best municipal waters. On top of that, the water that I put into it comes out of a filtered system. The smell increases over time since the last rinse-out, and I have heated a dozen full capacity loads.

When I use fresh water, I can barely smell the odor. If I let it sit in the container afterwards, the odor increases over time, and becomes so strong that I have to use a fresh fill. The water has less taste of the chemical, but it does have some if it's not fresh.

Just because someone else has the smell but yours doesn't does NOT mean that they're doing something wrong. It makes your review sound like a shill review... but that's just a guess.

Other than the smell, the product is very good. It heats water quickly, shuts itself off, and keeps the water pretty warm for a period of time. The stainless steel heating plate is good for ease of cleaning and preventing corrosion. The heating element is sealed in the carafe and can't be touched; a special base provides the power source so that the kettle is detached from the cord-- this is a nifty touch.

The lid design is clever but a little over-engineered I think; it's easy to get in the wrong position while out of the carafe and then it's not clear what to do to get it back. But it keeps the spout covered and the steam and heat in.

"Don't buy this Krups kettle", I had the same problem with the on/off switch except when mine broke (after only 3 months) it never went back on. Don't buy on-line. Buy where you can replace it and SAVE your receipt. Otherwise I loved it, if it only would work.

"Good Value, Insulated", This kettle is insulated so when it is hot, you do not burn yourself. It is easy to use and efficient.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Does not turn on", I have to push the on/off switch at least ten times to get the kettle to stay on. This happened from the first time I used it. I wish I returned it, but I thought the problem might go away with usage. It did not, and the customer service is completely useless. I do not give it one star as the kettle does turn on after many attempts, usually after trying for a few minutes to get it going.

"Unknown", I gave this kettle as a gift this holiday season and I don't know much about it. I ordered it on amazon.com with free shipping and the kettle looks very good.

"faulty on/off switch", It has never worked, from the beginning. If I had time, I'd take it back. We have to hit the on switch anywhere from 4-9x every morning to get it to go to boiling. It just switches off. I'm buying a different one.

"Excellent Electric Kettle!", After reading through the reviews and being an owner of a Krups coffee/espresso machine, I decided to purchase the black plastic electric kettle. I think it is important to note a few other people's comments on the stainless steel version as being dangerously hot and potential hazard. The black plastic gets plenty hot, but not so hot that it will scald you, as I suspect the stainless version will. I would definitely recommend the black version. Also, I have not had any problem with any sort of smell coming from it. Again, as other have recommmended, I followed the proceedure in the manual of rinsing it twice by bringing it to a boil before using it for any cooking, tea, etc. All said, a full pot will come to boil in no more than 2 minutes, and it works flawlessly every time. Great product!

"Love it!", I just bought this electric tea kettle for a brunch, and used it about half a dozen times so far. I think it has a great design, it is VERY fast, the noise is okay, and I have noticed NO odd smell or taste. My sister-in-law has had the stainless steel version for over a year, uses it multiple times a day, and also loves her. Would buy again.
