"Glorious Blades... those!" "Blades of Glory" truly brings out the charisma and brilliance of the sport of figure skating. Will Ferrell and Jon Heder as (Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy respectively) have done a fantastic job at bringing this sport into people's attention. It's not everyday that an unorthodox gamble gets made so well in a movie, but "Blades of Glory" is able to pull it off, and quite full of typical Farrell gags, from time to time. Chazz and Jimmy are long-time rivals, who share the Gold Medal for figure skating, only to create an embarrassing scene at the medal ceremony and stripped of the Gold as a result of that, and banned from the sport for life. They lose all that they've striven to achieve and are left abandoned in their miserly existence, until one fine day fate brings them together. Through a loophole in the regulations, they realize that they've been banned from their own division (of Men's Singles Skating). They can very well compete in the Couples event. What better partner for each than the other - they figure! What follows is not quite as brilliant as some of other sport movies you might've seen. But you've got to remember - this is a Will Ferrell movie, and that means something. Look out for those gags, some of which clearly seem to be out of context in the story, but will surely make you laugh; even if you wonder a moment later what's happening to the central plot of the movie. Never mind all those questions. This is a movie made to amuse and enjoy. In fact, a little more than Semi Pro was able to do. Not one of the Ferrell's best works, but certainly watchable. Performance-wise, Ferrell does a good job. I discovered a good artist out of this - Jon Heder. Overall Score: 4 / 5 "Blades of Glory" If you are a Will Ferrell fan, this is your movie. Funny stuff from the whole cast. I give it four stars. Careful with young kids. No nudity or anything, but Will Ferrell does play a sex addict. "The Ice lotus delivers!!!" This movie while obviously being over the top and somewhat too gay for words to describe , works on some sick twisted level. Somehow the passion that the two skaters share for their sport and winning comes off as genuine and heartfelt . It was funny and sometimes crude and obnoxious, ok most of the time. If you can get past the crudeness and the quasi homo erotic themes, well I say its 2 hours well spent. Perhaps it may inspire something in your gut other than queasy disgust. Smell the lotus. "hillarious" Will Ferrell at his best. to my oppinion this is one of will ferell's best movies. jon heder & will ferell make a good comedic team. this movie was awesome. "one gag after another" Will Ferrell and John Heder play Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy, figure skating competitors with vastly different styles who get banned for life from men's figure skating when they get in a fight over a competition that ended with them in a tie. Fast-forward a couple of years, and both their lives are ruined, when they get a proposition: there's nothing in the rulebook that says that the skaters in pairs skating must be of opposite genders. The rest of the film is one gag after another as the two train together, and the reigning king and queen of pairs skating, Stranz and Fairchild (Amy Poehler and Will Arnett), scheme to keep them out of competition. Adding a sweet counter (and welcome relief, I must admit) to the silliness is Stranz and Fairchild's younger sister Katie (Jenna Fischer) falls for Jimmy MacElroy and is torn between being her siblings' dogsbody (think Julia Roberts's character in America's Sweethearts) and following her heart. It's not Great Cinema, but it's a lot of fun, a lot of laughs. A warning, though: if you don't already like Will Ferrell, Blades of Glory will not change your mind.

The plot is bizarre and oddball beyond imagination and, as something genuinely different, deserves a high rating. Two enemies, who are figure-skaters with diametrically opposed styles are thrown out of skating because of a stupid fight during an awards ceremony. Both are forced into demeaning jobs but find that there is a loophole in the regulations. They can still compete but must compete as dancing doubles. Reluctantly and with huge antagonism they decide on it. They do well but must compete against an unscruplous, brother-sister doubles team that will do anything to win. They encourage their younger sister to seduce the younger member of the competitive team and then betray him with his partner [who happens to be an uncontrollable sex maniac]. It almost happens which drives a huge wedge between the partners. To hedge their bets the brother-sister team attempts to handcuff their opponents until the Montreal competition is over. Both men escape, however, to finish their routine with the incredible and lethal 'iron lotus'. They win; the brother-sister team is arrested; and boy gets girl. One of many funny scenes is the brother-sister competing as JFK and Marilyn Monroe. Hilarious. Ron Braithwaite "A Perfect Comedy!!!", Will Ferrell and Jon Heder are awesome together! This is an extremely funny movie! Jimmy MacElroy and Chazz Michael Michaels are skaters who tie for the gold. When they soon fight in front of everyone watching, they are banned for life from men's singles competition. Three years pass, and Jimmy's gay stalker finds a loophole; he can skate in couple's skating. Jimmy's old coach has an idea for Jimmy and Chazz to work together and become the first males couple's skating. Jimmy and Chazz finally work together and become friends to beat the brother-sister team of Stranz and Fairchild van Waldenberg. Jimmy falls in love with their sister Katie. Stranz and Fairchild try to stop Jimmy and Chazz from winning the gold. If you love comedy, and Will Ferrell, and John Heder, you'll love BLADES OF GLORY!!! "Forgettable Comedy", You can't expect too much out of anything with Will Ferrell. But if you don't expect much, you might not be let down and may be pleasantly amused. This was the case in Blades of Glory. Jon Heder and Will Ferrell are a very good comedic team, and Will Arnett and Jenna Fischer also have great supporting roles. I would definitely not plan a weekend around watching this movie, but if you have some time to kill, it is a pleasant waste of time. A few words of warning - it is a bit crude in parts, as you would expect from a Will Ferrell movie, so is not recommended for particular viewers. Also, fans of ice skating may also be offended for the portrayal of their sport in the movie. However, several skating big wigs do come in for cameos, so that might be fun for some. Lastly, if you think the premise of the movie might be a thin disguise for promotion of a homosexual agenda, you might be right, but it is a very minor part of the movie and the references are few and/or not overt. "Packaged poorly", The sender mailed my DVD without its orginal DVD case. It was taped to a piece of cardboard. I haven't watched the movie yet, but wouldn't doubt that its scratched. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "It's Okay / Talladega Nights Was much better", I gave this movie 3 stars because I wanted to like this movie. Will Ferrell needs to stop making these sport movies. They are looking the same. If you saw Talladega Nights than you have seen this movie already. Just that Talladega Nights was so much better. I'm gald we just reneted this movie because we were so disappointed in it. We've followed Ferrell's carrer from SNL, Old School, Stranger than Fiction, etc. So it's not like we don't like him. I recommend renting this if you do the deleivering to the house rentals, if not save your money. "Just Not Funny", I just didn't find this funny, but then, I don't really find Will Ferrel funny. Oh well... I gave him a shot. "So Lame it's Hilarious", BLADES OF GLORY, as anyone knows, is pure Will Ferrell schtick. It's another zany role where Ferrell can be gross, pompous, self-indulgent, petulant, ludicrous, foolish, irritating, just plain silly, and way, way, over the top. In fact, Ferrell is getting so over the top in his performances one wonders if he isn't doing a tongue-in-cheek parody of. . .Will Ferrell. Which is one reason why BLADES OF GLORY--a lame, nonsensical flick that should dissolve in its own goofiness--is so darn funny. We're never going to take Will Ferrell seriously, so why should this movie deserve any different consideration? A movie about a sport I wouldn't, in real life, walk across the street to watch allows Will Ferrell to run amuck, allows the cast to lob spoof after spoof of ribald double entendres. The result: pure comedic nirvana. And it's not just Ferrell alone who makes this film uproariously funny. Heck, the entire cast cuts loose and has a blast. Jon Neder, Ferrell's sidekick, is effectively "Ah, shucks" nerdy; Craig T. Nelson can play an eccentric gung-ho motivator with the best of them; and villains Will Arnett and Amy Poehler hysterically push the envelope (their skating routine portraying JFK and Marilyn Monroe had me rolling on the floor). Fact is, there's not a weak link in this acting ensemble; yet another reason why this movie works so well. The plot is lame. The ending is hokey and over the top. And in every scene silliness reigns supreme. But it doesn't matter: BLADES OF GLORY is a rib-tickling delight, compliments of Ferrell and cast. I haven't had this much fun since "Caddyshack." --D. Mikels, Author, Walk-On "A typical modern comedy good for a few laughs", I was in the first generation of Saturday Night Live and followed the careers of its first great comics -- Dan Ackroyd, John Belushi and Bill Murray -- and stepped away from the show way before Eddie Murphy showed up. So Will Ferrell, whom many 30-somethings today think is the metaphor os silly comedy, never registered with me. I've not had interest in any of his films. I watched this one at the request of a friend going through tough times who told me it was a lot better than he expected. Turns out the film reminded me some of a movie from a similar time in Murray's career called "Stripes" about the star going into the Army. You probably already know the "Blades of Glory" storyline: rival figure skaters Ferrell and prissy Jon Heder torment each other and fight during a skating World Championships award cermemony and are stripped of their ability to compete for life as individuals. After unsatisfactory careers away from the spotlight, they exploit a loophole come back as a two-man doubles team using an oddball collection of moves. They recommect with an old coach, begin training in a meat locker, and you can probably guess the rest. There's a lot silly sexual innuendo and nice romance involved, too. And, as he has in other films, Ferrell is more than happy to show off his beer gut. This movie reminded me a lot of other sports comedies like "Cool Runnings" and "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story". It wasn't as good as the first one and wasn't as filthy as the second but shared elements of both -- bad guys with good hearts, tragedy turned to triumph, and an overriding feeling of lightness and silliness that ensures you are entertained all the time. The movie has a lot of authentic ice skating people in it and some famous sportscasters, too. I doubt this is done to give authenticity to the flick, which no one will confuse with reality moviemaking. The production values are all pretty good and everything is well lit so no action escapes you on those grounds. There are plenty of laughs on hand, most due to Ferrell's antics and the counterpoint between his roughneck, hard drinking, sexual and out there character and the blond, prissy, good two shoes character John Heder portrays. Craig Nelson plays the role of coach, of course, in his typical style. It's a good cast with some laughs that should get you through a night when you're looking for something light, funny, predicatable and forgettable. "rent, dont buy", Blades of Glory is funny the first time around, but isn't worth owning or watching more than twice. If you want to see Will Farrell at his best you're better off buying Zoolander, and for Jon Heder stick with Napoleon Dynamite (which is more of a social statement than a comedy).Long story short, rent Blades of Glory but no need to own it. ![]() |
