Others say...
"reset" The product works fine when you figure out how operate it. After a lot of frustration trying to activate the thing it occured to me to push the reset button on the receiver and the sender at the same time. Worked like a charm. "AW131 Wireless BBQ Oven/Thermometer" Works as advertised. I found I had to press and hold the on/off buttons for a couple of seconds to get things started. Instruction weren't clear about that. Other than that, I really like its performance. Range was excellent. I have aluminum siding on my house and a lot of times remote devices can't penetrate but there was no problem with the 131. "thermometer" Somewhat confusing to begin with, but accurate once you figure out how to operate it. "Works anywhere around the house and yard" Had it for a year now, and use it on the BBQ rotisserie for chicken. Don't ask how. Is accurate to 1 or 2 degrees. Have probably cooked 30 chickens with it. Is the only one I found will operate anywhere around inside and outside the house. I think you could actually get over 300 feet with this one. The other brand couldn't make it 10 feet through a stucco wall. Be sure to turn on the transmitter first, then the receiver. The manual could be better. I forgot to turn down the left burner and fried the wire to the probe, my fault. Don't expect the wire to survive over a large flame. I got it hot enough to melt the metal jacket. Time for a probe replacement. "Great product!" I bought this for my husband for Christmas, and it is fantastic! We do a lot of grilling all year, and this makes it particularly nice when the weather is cold. No going in and out of the house constantly to check the temperature of the meat! The remote recevier is really handy if you are multi-tasking, just clip it to your belt and it tells you when it's time to go take the meat off the grill. This has definitely helped to prevent a few over-cooked tri-tip roasts.

Why I buy this one ? - Sensor has temperature range from 32°F to 572°F and the audio alarm sounds when selected temperature is reached - Four doneness selections include rare, medium rare, medium, and well done - Main unit will receive the probe signal from up to 330 feet away - Stainless steel probe detaches from sensor for easy cleaning - Low battery indicator It's better to buy this one too...

What our customer's say! "Good quality great features", I have earned different tempt products for cooking. This by far is one of the best thought out designs yet. It's construction is solid and of good materials. The functions are intuitive and programmable. It is easy to program without the need to breakout the instruction manual. The transmitter marries easily to the receiver. There are plenty of mode to select how well you want something cooked, but they are easily adjustable to your taste. The talking feature I first thought was gimmick, especially when it gets close to the program temp. it begins to say "almost done." I am finding out how convinient those notices are so I would scramble to fetch what I need to remove the food before it burns. The range is excellent, I haven't lost connection so far. The temp probe cable length is generous, so you can easily place the transmitter on a surface in most kitchen designs. "Great!", I purchased this unit this summer (08) to use with my new Holland grill. The unit works great. I have not had a bad meal with it yet. Have used it about 20 times on Turkey, Chicken, Fish, and Steak. Read other reviews before I purchased it, and was a little concerned about some of them that said they could not get the units to "talk to each other". I have not had any problems. One improvement to recommend though. The timer function should have a quick reset button so you dont have to push multiple buttons to get back to zero. Otherwise, I am completely happy. "It works but it could be much better", I've owned this unit for almost a year and I use it almost every weekend with my smoker(s). It is a nice concept and I like the looks but unfortunately the devil is in the details and there are a number for frustrating details with this thermometer. First problem has been mentioned by other reviewers--the connection wedges on occasion and you have to reset one or usually both units to get them to talk to each other again. On a long smoke this can happen once, sometimes twice. For 4 hour sessions it often works without a problem. I have 3 OS wireless weather thermometers that have been functioning solidly for 10 years or more so I know is possible for them to design something that is more reliable. Don't think they are interfering with the BBQ unit but they never malfunction. The most frustrating problem is the interface. It is really unintuitive and difficult to operate. In the default mode you select the meat type and the "doneness." In this mode you can toggle between meats fairly easily but I can never get it to change the done level. Fortunately there is a 2nd mode where you can change modes to a direct temp target and that is pretty straightforward and works well for smoking. As usual with OS products the instruction manual is pretty much useless and its printed in tiny type. Finally I should mention the talking. Very annoying...especially if something is finishing in the middle of the night and it starts announcing, "almost done" while you're trying to sleep. This starts about 5 degrees before done and just repeats over and over. I can usually get it to shut up but don't really have the time to sit down and figure out how to turn it off for good. They seem to think (from the product description) this is great for getting your attention during a party but that's not my usage pattern and it doesn't really fit a fairly quiet household. So I have quite a few Oregon Scientific products and I have to say this one does not meet my expectations. I like the exterior design but the interface is awful and the reliability is below par. "good product, but you MUST like elctronic gadgets to use one", This was a gift for my husband and he loves it. He is willing to read the instructional manual and he really likes electronics and technology type toys. I thought about ordering one for my dad, but he doesn't even use a cell phone or set the blinking clock on the VCR - not the type of gift he would use - so good to know the person your shopping for. My husband looks forward to an advanced model with a personal voice recognition program so he can program the talking responses (if they ever go that far!)...Go Flip your Chicken! "Highly Recommend The AW131 BBQ/Oven Thermometer", This is a great choice if you want a serious cooking thermometer. As soon as I received it I tested it against a digital instant-read thermometer in a glass filled with ice cubes and water and then in a pan of boiling water. In both tests it was right on the mark with the instant-read thermometer. Later in an actual cooking test with a pork roast in the oven it came out with exactly the same reading as the instant-read. Finally, cooking some pork shoulders in an outdoor barbecue pit, it once again was right on the mark with the instant-read. For me, two additional features that are important are, 1) it warns you when the meat temperature is 5 degrees away from the target temp allowing you to remove the meat at that time and allow the carry over cooking to reach the final temp thereby keeping the meat from over cooking; and 2) you can manually set a target temperature of your own choosing, such as 190F, if you want really tender pork shoulders/butts for pulled pork. I highly recommend the Oregon Scientific AW131 BBQ/Oven Thermometer. It is accurate and has operated flawlessly for me. Be sure to read the instructions and don't forget those parts of the instructions about resetting both units. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Have to Reset Every Time I turn it on", Every time I use this, I have to press the reset button multiple times before the base picks up the signal from the thermometer and annotates the temperature. It shouldn't be this hard to use the product, so I am not happy with it. When I turn it on, it should work. PERIOD. I will not buy another product from this company. It's made in China, and I'm finding out that made in China means poor quality and workmanship. "Don't waste your money on this unit", The AW131 worked perfectly fine the very first time, even the synch up between the probe and the display worked just fine. I measured cooked meat to be 70 Celsius and it got it right, it was perfectly done. The second try - a few weeks later, same thing, started at firdge temperature, then within a few minutes went up to 90 Celsius - the meat was not even warm were the probe was sitting. Sure, empty batteries was also my first guess, so I replaced both sets of batteries with brand new ones (all measured slightly below 1.6 V) and then the fun started. The display showed a room temperature of 210 F and I could not convince it that it was only about 70. No reset, no battery out, wait a minute, battery back in has worked. The only thing I have not tried yet (but getting ready to....) is the sledge hammer. I had high hopes and was really happy with it after the first use - now I would not buy it again. I expect a thermometer/probe in that price range to be reliable - the one I got is a piece of junk... Tom "Runs out of batteries too fast", Get rechargable batteries for this unit, if you buy it. And prepare to annoy your neighbors. It's loud and uses up batteries fast. "Big Disappointment", It worked great...ONCE! After the first time using it I thought it was the coolest gift I had received. Unfortunately it never worked again. I tried many times to replace the batteries, hit the reset buttons, and any combination of the two. I REALLY wanted it to work again, but alas it did not...The base station would not read the transmitter it would indicate good signal but the temp always read 32 deg. Save your money and buy a $20 wired digital thermometer. "If you don't have one, get one now!", If you like to cook, a wireless thermometer is a MUST. I bought this one as a gift. I got it because the red color matches the kitchen of the person I gave it to. They love it and love the talking aspect. The one I bought for myself does not talk and talking is not a necessity, but a fun option. These things make cooking any meat easy. Whether its chicken, turkey, ham, roast beef, or pork this will make a perfect moist meat without wondering, guessing the time, or having to cut into it and check. I know how to cook and am pretty good at it, but this makes it so much easier. Not only does the meat get to the perfect temperature with precise control, but you get to watch it while you are watching TV or doing something else. So crack open a beer and set it on the stand, or clip it to your belt while you get some cleaning done and you are no longer tied to the kitchen. These also make great house warming gifts. ![]() |
