"Fun" I bought this product for my restaurant as I am hoping to show music videos. I was very excited to get this "toy" and try it out. In the box you get the Apple TV, a power cord and a remote about the size of a 2nd generation ipod shuffle. As previously mentioned, there are only a few buttons and no scrolling feature like on the regular ipods. Upon connecting the power cord to the wall the device turns on (there is no power button). It then takes you through an initial setup where you configure your device to sync with your wireless computer. Once that's done your device starts to download everything from your computer which takes longer than if it was hooked up via cables, but not a big deal. The device is cool because you can purchase music, movies and videos right from your living room and they will auto sync with your computer. It boasts 1080i/p HD, but I haven't had a chance to try that out (not many music videos in HD). Here are some tips if you decide to buy this: 1. After initial setup, make sure you check for software updates. As of the date on this review you should be up to version 2.2 (the Apple guy told me whenever iTunes updates, so does Apple TV). 2. If you want to use 1080p, you won't have that option initially until you get the latest update; in the meantime choose 1080i (you need to make a choice to continue). 3. Get the proper cables to hook up to your tv- if your tv has HDMI, get HDMI. 4. While there is no power button, there is a standby mode, so get familiar with it. 5. The unit gets hot, very hot; I suggest you get one of those laptop coolers and put it underneath the unit. 6. The included control can get annoying because when you want to type you have to scroll to each letter, however, if you own an iphone, you can get the 'remote' app that will allow you to use your iphone as a remote providing you with a full qwerty keyboard. Other than some minor things, like a freeze up I had the second night I used it, I love this thing. It is fun to download media on the fly. "Flawless, Crashproof, Entertaining" Great Apple interface, dummy-proof setup, easily access all the media in your house. Browse iTunes and YouTube, all with one remote. If I could change anything it would be how hot it runs, but don't let that stop you. The rolling, cascading screensaver alone is worth the price of admission. When you use your own photos, it can be addictive to watch. "Definitely NOT worth the money." Trust me, do not waste your money on this product. We have owned this unit for several months now and really wish we could still return it. I am still an Apple fan. I have a MacBook and the Airport both are wonderful but this little gadget just isn't worth it! - The movie rentals are a SCAM. When a new movie comes out you can BUY it right away for $15 dollars, but they make you wait another month before you can rent it. wtf? I can rent it from Netflix or Blockbuster the same day it comes out but Apple makes me wait a month! They are just trying to get you to spend more money. - We have to reboot it ALL THE TIME. It just goes out to lunch for some reason. It won't download, or it says it can't connect to the Apple store. Then we have to get up off the nice comfy couch, pull the power plug from the back of the unit, then count to ten and plug it back in. - As others have said, the unit gets HOT. Chernobyl HOT. I have to prop it up on stilts to keep it from melting the finish off my table. - The remote sucks. We also have an Apple laptop in the living room and the remotes are exactly the same. So if you are using the laptop and someone trys to watch a movie it makes the computer go crazy until you physically block the IR port. - It is a real pain to find a movie you are looking for. You can scroll and scroll and scroll and hope you get lucky or you can try the search function which is like entering your name into the video game you just got high score on at the arcade... one letter at a time. "Better than you might think" I've had an apple tv for about 5 months and I think I've actually sold a few to friends and it's not for the reasons you might think. Many reviewers have focused on movie rentals, but I bought this to be able to share my photos and home videos with family and friends. I know it could be called a glorified ipod, but it quietly gives me access to the home movies and family photos that have sequestered on my hard drive. Instead of gathering around the computer to see the latest...we just access the apple tv. It is also as another reviewer mentioned, a great way to access your music collection. By the way I have rented movies and played purchased movies...it works great. For me, 720p is fine...you won't find anything better than 720p on cable or broadcast HD. I also love being able to use my iPhone as a remote for the system. It's awesome "Does Not Deserve to Wear the Apple Logo" I'm an Apple fan. I have owned two desktops, an Airport, four iPods, and and iPhone. This product is just not ready for prime time. But it makes a really nice, warm, $300 doorstop. Here's my setup, DSL line to Airport base station, over wireless, to Apple TV. (Note: I later added a Cat 5 wire between the Airport and the Apple TV, and performance only improved marginally.) 1. Movie Rental Scheme Makes No Sense - If you want to rent an HD movie it takes about 5 hours to download. Then you've got 30 days to start watching it. Once you start watching a two hour movie you have to finish within 24 hours. We have a toddler. Those blocks of time are not likely to line up in our lives for at least 15 years. It just doesn't make any sense. The only real knock on the Apple TV here is the 5 hours it takes to download. Apple pitched it as something you could start watching right away. That just hasn't been my experience. 2. Only 780p, not 1080p -- If I'm going to drop $300 on a consumer electronics device, it should perform at the current gold standard. 3. It gets hot -- As many others noted, the unit gets very warm. I was afraid to leave the stereo cabinet doors closed for risk of fire. 4. The Remote is Lame -- Scrolling, scrolling, scrolling . . . keep that thumb scrolling. Too many menu choices for such a limited remote. It takes many many clicks to get where you're going. 5. Latency -- It's like a bad cell phone or PDA. If you push a button and it is busy doing something, it just sits there. No acknowledgment, no little hourglass, just sits there. I had to wait up to a few minutes for remote clicks to be processed. I routinely waited 10-30 seconds for clicks to process. 6. Long Waits for Content -- If you want to watch HD content, it does NOT start playing right away. You have to wait between 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 times the length of the content before you can start watching. Contrast all of this above with a Blu-Ray DVD player. The player is about the same price. The content costs about the same. There's no latency. There's no waiting for downloads. The images are full 1080p. The one good thing about the Apple TV, HD Podcasts. We loved the NASA podcasts of space imagery and underwater diving podcasts. Final word, way too expensive for what it does. We returned it after 3 weeks.

What our customer's say! "Don't Buy Before You Read This", My Apple TV (ATV) worked fine for over a year. That changed with the latest software upgrade. Apple support is the worst I've experienced. Syncing with iTunes has stopped since their latest version 2.3 of the ATV software. A number of people are having this issue and reported it on the Apple support forum. Apple Support was totally unhelpful. Wanted me to pay for "extended care" since I bought my ATV last year. I said it's not my out-of-Apple support ATV, but their new software that's the problem. Told me it was "buyer beware" with respect to updates your ATV prompts you to do, and that my only recourse was to role back to the factory default (version 1.1) - that is unless I wanted to pay for support. So I asked her if she'd heard of the problem, and she said no. Excuse me? What would I be paying for then? Why can't this company support the software they just released for free like any other responsible manufacturer??? They are shooting themselves in the foot because now that I've rolled back to 1.1, I can't buy the new content they're pushing from the iTunes store. So much for the Apple mantra that "it just works." And here's the icing on the cake - when I posted my experience on the Apple Support forum and asked for help, they deleted it as a "non-constructive rants or complaints." Apparently, customer dissatisfaction is something they don't want to hear about or for others to know. Interestingly, when I searched for my problem with the search function on Apple's forum, I couldn't come up any postings on point. I then went to Google and found relevant posts on the Apple forum right away. So to be clear, I loved my Apple TV until Apple released this upgrade to its software. If there is a solution to this problem, good luck in getting it out of Apple since they don't even acknowledge there is a problem which is posted on their user forums. Think long and hard before placing yourself at the mercy of Apple's support policies. And I certainly wouldn't buy this product until Apple announces that the problem has been fixed. "Reliable, but movie selection is limited.", Setup took a while, downloading of iTunes library and my photos taking the most time. I've only had to reboot it once due to hanging up. Itunes movie rental library is limited. Video podcasts are great, many are higher quality than those that I download on my TiVo series 2. I also enjoy the screen saver feature with my digital photos flowing while I'm playing songs from my iTunes library. "Now supports 1080p and 5.1 surround", The content on the Apple iTunes store does not offer 1080p for purchase, but you can rent 1080p content or add it (if you can get it) from your computer. There are also 1080p video podcasts. 5.1 digital surround is now supported and you can rip your DVDs using 5.1 with Handbrake software (free download on the web). Handbrake works with Mac OS 10.5 or > and Windows (if you are unfortunate enough to not have a Mac). Caveats: It does run hot. The video used to lag, but this seems much better with the latest releases of the OS. The GUI can stick and then jump - so you click 3 times with no effect and then it jumps the 3 positions, etc. The remote control is a pain when typing passwords or searching youtube, etc. If you have an iPhone (I think iPod Touch also) you can use the Remote Application to control your Apple TV (or iTunes) from your iPhone. It's great and much better than the remote that comes with the Apple TV. I highly recommend a direct 100 Mb ethernet connection or 802.11n. Do not use this product with 802.11g or slower. Don't bother with the 40GB version. It's just too small. You'll wish you had the 160GB. The 40GB is only good if you don't buy content - only rent movies. But watch out - if you keep you music on it, you'll want more space. The Apple TV is great even just as a music jukebox! Even if you don't use it for video. We use it all the time for music. It's easier than hooking up an iPod and having to pick up the iPod to change songs, etc. The GUI on the HDTV screen is so much better. I looked at similar MP3 components for audio only - this was cheaper and had a far superior GUI. It is so easy to use that my wife can do it (she is not technology savvy). The other great thing is that software updates are free and come automatically over the internet. New features and fixes! Bottom line: There is no other product like it on the market in terms of cost, intuitive interface, quality, and features. "upholds apple products' standard of quality", basically a hard drive that sincs wirelessly to your itunes library, the hdmi connection to your tv provides premier audio and video that will tantalize your eyes and soothe your ears. the 160 gig version will store all your music, movies and much much more. highly recommend this product. "Port 3689 problems that Apple will not address", I have had this Apple TV since it first came out and paid almost $400 for it. It worked great until iTunes software updates around the 7.2 something... anyhow, after that update people have been having problems with the port settings. You call Apple and they read from queue cards and have no idea what they are doing. They always blame someone or something else, like your router (I also use an Apple Airport router, which i bought because i was told by Apple it was my router and buying theirs would fix my Apple TV problem...NOPE) Don't get me wrong, I love Apple products and I am amazed at the BUGS in this product. There are many folks with the same issues...just go to google and type in "apple tv port 3689" enjoy the reading. I am going to ebay this piece of junk, so look for it there if you want it. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Very Good Product", I really love this thing. I have it connected via component cables to a home theater reciever for audio and seperately to my tv for video, controlled with a Logitech Harmony Remote (also iPhone / Apple Remote App ). Music Entire 4,000+ CD library hooked up to my home stereo, no weird techy workarounds to get music playing on my home stereo, no wizzing fans, no running into the other room to change a song. iPod dock was fine but nothing can touch the easy of use and convenience of using the Apple TV as a Network Audio Server. Turn the TV off after the music gets going and you can control it with iPhone or iTouch (entire playlist is right there on the luxurious iphone screen in your pocket). Video I have a 32" HD-LCDTV, at 32" the normal resolution of video from iTunes video store is virtually the same as TimeWarner HD Cable Channels. HD vids are available, only necessary for larger screens I think. I usually rent movies rather than buy, better selection than cable on-demand. Can do it right on the TV, great selection of stuff I actually want to watch. Rentals are $3-$5 - play in about 30 sec. Good surround sound, indistinguishable from a DVD. I cancelled Netflix a few weeks after getting this. Pros Techphobe Spouse actually likes and uses it (she looooooves the slideshow feature) Easy Apple Interface Plug it in and it works instantly (configuration with a LAN could be taxing if you're unfamilliar with how to set one up) Cons Apple Universal Remote went right in the garbage, as always. Entering text via Apple Remote remote is brutal. Hates Firewalls Limited storage Wishlist Pandora (without hacking) on the AppleTV, just like the iPhone version Let me type in text with an iPhone or Touch Expandable Storage "Works Great!", It works Great! It is a very good way to have access to podcasts, youtube, and your music and photo library in your tv. "On my 3rd unit already...Lots of flaws", Let me state right up front that I really do like this product, or at least the idea anyway but I'm on my third one in less than two years and I have spent countless hours wrestling with it and it has never performed 100% fully. Sometimes it syncs, sometimes it doesn't...while sometimes it streams and sometimes it doesn't. I have lost my media several times (thankfully it's all backed up on a Western Digital 2 TB ext HD). I have reset as well as factory restored innumerable times too, and let's not forget to mention the dozens of hours spent on the phone with Apple's tech support. FYI: Apple tech support can be very "hit or miss" depending who answers the call. The original 40Gb model ended up on eBay for sale, then I learned within a few weeks that Apple released a whole new version of Apple TV that allegedly fixed the bugs. So, being the techno-obsessed that I am, I ordered a brand new 160GB model directly from Apple. Sadly, I must report it is less than a year old and it's gone back to Apple for a replacement. Final thought: if you're thinking about buying an Apple TV product...be sure to spend the extra $49 for Apple's Care plan...otherwise they won't even talk to you. "An fancy looking hotplate for mom's casserole", Geez steve, wtf?! No looping function?! Choppy playback for large files?! Pain in the rear to update the playlist from Itunes. Might be great for people sitting at home that are boycotting cable pay per view or someone that wants to watch youtube all day. For any serious professional or corporate use, this thing is worthless. Like anything apple, wait for the third generation, maybe they'll get it all figured out by then. I still can't believe there is no looping function, my walkman back in the eighties had a looping function. Big dissapointment. "Gets better, but definitely some flaws", I'd always wanted an Apple TV, just to be able to enjoy the simplicity it would bring to renting/watching movies. I love Redbox, but it drives me nuts when I have to wait in line, or can't get the movie I want when I want it. Apple TV doesn't have that problem. That being said, here is my list of pros and cons: PROS: 1. Syncs up with multiple iTunes libraries very easily. Depending on your content, it can take awhile, but everything does on the first sync. 2. With my Samsung 720p HDTV, everything looks great. Much better than my Dish Network receiver w/ HD TV. I expect that's due to the compressed signal I get from Dish Network versus the Apple TV. 3. Very easy to use and setup. Decent movie selection, and same-day movie releases (same as DVD releases) 4. Looks fantastic--amazing how small it is! 5. With the iPhone 2.0 firmware, the remote app certainly ads to controlling the Apple TV. Too bad the remte that comes with the Apple TV isn't this good. CONS: 1. Takes awhile for movies to be rentable sometimes. One of the biggest reasons I got it is so I didn't have to go to Redbox. Drives me nuts I can't rent things as quickly. 2. The dreaded "Apple logo" freezing issue. Sometimes, I'll start it up, and it just stays on the Apple logo. The Apple TV is not responsive whatsoever. After further research, it looks like shutting off the screen saver is supposed to help. I've done that, and haven't had the problem since. It has only been a few days, so I need to keep watching it. 3. Apple needs to not make this a "hobby" any longer. They need to really step up to the plate and make the Apple TV an awesome product. It's close, but there are definitely some improvements that can be made to the device/experience. With a little more tweaking, Apple could have a real winner...when and if they do this, they need to give existing Apple TV owners the upgrade for free... 4. Pricing... Why not make it $0.99/night or something similar, like Redbox? While $2.99 isn't bad for a rental, I only have 24 hours to watch it before its gone. For 24 hours with Redbox I'd pay $1.06 versus $2.99. HD rentals are worth an extra cost, but more competitive pricing would be more appealing to me, at least. 5. Selection--While Apple does have a decent movie selection, they need more. Some recent movies, like "Alex and Emma" are no where to be found. I know it takes time, and it's not always possible to have everything, but it should would be nice to have more. Overall, I am very happy with my Apple TV. Apple continues to improve upon it, a bit slowly, but it really is becoming a very worthy product. If they take care of some of the few remaining issues, continue to bring more features, they'll really have another winner on their hands. ![]() |
