Others say...
"Gift of TIVO Digital Video Recorder for brother's Big Birthday!" Vann's was terrific. They mailed the TIVO Digital Video Recorder to me promptly in a well wrapped container. I would not hesitate to purchase another product from them! "Nothing like a TiVo, no one comes close" Tivo is a brnad name. Like Band Aid, the name should only apply to the product that bears its name. Too many people say they have a Tivo, but in reality it is a watered down dvr from a satellite or cable provider. Over the last 5 years, we have had DVR's from Dish Network, DirecTV and now, Fios from Verizon. We first experienced Tivo with the DirecTivo receivers. It is amazing how intuitive the Tivo interface is. How easy it is to use. My mom came by to babysit her grandchild a few days ago and had no problem not only using the Tivo remote to change channels, but to also, on her own, figure out how to watch recorded shows or use the program guide. We have three Tivos in our home. The one HD unit in the living room, and two other SD units in two bedrooms. For me, multi room viewing and Tivo-to-Go all work for all three tivo units. In addition, I added a My DVR Expander to more than triple my storage capacity. Another reviewer wrote that these features didn't work with hers. But their review was written over a year ago. Since then, Tivo must have activated those services. We ordered our Tivo a few days after we got Verizon Fios TV service. Sure, the Fios is great; Fast internet, great tv quality, low price. But it also has a half baked dvr. I say that with all respect, compared to Tivo, it is only half complete. After using the Tivos of DirecTV, and even DirecTV's own HD DVR, the Motorola from Fios was awful. Changing channels was a chore. Soemtimes you pressed the buttons and it responded, sometime s it didn't. Thinking I had a bad dvr, I tried my neighbor's unit. Same thing. I guess Verizon spent all their R&D money on developing how to get the signal to my house....but not how to manipulate it once I got it here to my home. I was seriously considering dropping the Fios TV and going back to DirecTV. Doing some research, I found that Tivo had released a lower cost HD Tivo, this one. The first HD Tivo was over $600. Sorry, at that cost, I'd have to sleep with one eye open for quite a while until my wife settled down. At the cost of this HD Tivo, only about $240 when I bought it, I don't have to worry about the wrath of my wife. I got the Tivo and called Verizon to install the CableCards necessary to make it work. Here in North Jersey, Verizon has S-card CableCards, which means I had to order two CableCards to use both tuners. The Tivo will also accept M-Cards, but my guess is that Verizon likes to charge their customers for two separate cards, rather than one. I am paying $7.98 for the two cards, $3.99 each. If you are going to add CableCards to your Tivo, use google to read up on getting prepared for the installer. You will need to perform a guided setup BEFORE the installer arrives. From our experience, the Verizon installers don't see a lot of these Tivos yet, so they are not very familiar with them. Make sure you have all the instructions out for them. Tivo's customer service will also work with the installer to get your Tivo activated.....when was the last time anyone said some thing good about an American comapny's customer service? Using Tivo is a breeze. It just works. Recording shows, adjusting times so it doesn't miss the end of recordings. it even tells me if I am recording something live, like a football game and asks if I want to extend the timer....how is that for intuitive? I can watch the shows recorded from my Tivos upstairs, and the upstairs SD tivos can watch all the non-HD recordings from the HD Tivo. And here's a really great feature. I recently traveled overseas on business. I used the Tivo Desktop software to record hours and hours of shows to a portable hard drive. I then instaleld the Tivo Desktop software on my laptop and watched all the shows on my computer while I was away. Here's a quick bit on how it works....tivo has file protection on it's Tivo recordings. You cannot share them over the Internet with others (Legally, that is). When you install the Tivo Desktop software on your computer, it adds some type of decyption key to allow you to play the files. Oh, one more thing, you must have DVD playing software on your computer like WinDVD or PowerDVD. I cannot remember exactly what, but I seem to recall that Tivo Desktop uses some codecs from the DVD players. Overall, our Tivo works, works well, and is an important part of our home entertainment system. It never sleeps, and it has yet to miss a scheduled recording. Ron "Wish I had purchased sooner!" I went from a cable company DVR to the TIVO and I love it. I never knew how much I was missing. The one sent out had an issue requiring a daily reboot, I called TIVO and they replaced it quickly and I now have no issues. The customer service at TIVO is the best I have ever dealt with, they even emailed me the UPS label for the return. "TiVo HD" I love TiVo. And this HD box takes cable cards, so you don't have to have a cable box AND a TiVo box just TiVo. It's a great product. "I didn't like that I needed to get a CableCard from Comcast..." When I purchased this item I don't recall seeing information in the product description or specifications stating that I would require a "single or dual channel CableCard" from my cable company to use the HD function of the DVR. I don't happen to like my cable company. When I told them I needed this they promised to get one for me, but never delivered. This is not unusual behavior for Comcast, and so I wasn't surprised. We currently have a Series 2 DVR that I upgraded with a 500gb WD drive and it works just fine with the new Samsung 51" HD LCD we bought from our favorite electronics store - Amazon.com. I'm disappointed that Tivo didn't just charge me an extra $20-$50 for the HD DVR and include the CableCard in the DVR. This is the fatal flaw in the product, in my humble opinion.

What our customer's say! "I love my Tivo and Tivo HD is even better!", Great product. I've been a Tivo subscriber for years and I just finally made the transition to Tivo HD and I haven't looked back since. The recorded video clarity is wonderful and they've added some extra features as well. My only complaint is the 'Closed Captioning' feature. It is a pain to turn on and off because it takes so many steps to do so. "I love my TIVO HD", I know most cable companies have started offering DVRs with their service (including Charter, which I have), but there is just something I love about my TIVO. I upgraded to the HD unit so that I could use both cable and an antenna, since Charter doesn't offer HD service for all of the local channels. So far it works great! Be aware that TIVO HD does NOT use a cable box!! If you have digital cable (usually channels 100 and above), premium channels, or HD cable, you need to call your cable company and lease a CableCard. You cannot hook your cable box to the TIVO HD - it will not recognize the signals for anything beyond the basic analog channels. Also, if you use digital features like Video On Demand or pay-per-view, those won't work without a cable box. It is best to contact your cable provider to verify what you will need if you get this TIVO HD. Moving on to the unit....I like that I can set it to change the output resolution automatically (based on the video source) or set it to static resolutions. The remote also allows you to change the aspect on the fly without having to use your TV's display controls. It displays hi-def resolutions fantastically, but remember that you have to have HD signal for it to display in HD (not just digital signals). When I first hooked it up and got everything setup, it seemed to have a few problems when changing channels - it would display a brief "searching for signal" message (usually just a few seconds). After about 4 days, the service downloaded the latest update and now everything seems to be working correctly, with no delays. Another caveat...I'm using it with an HDMI cable and when I set the TIVO to allow low sounds (the little 'doodoop' noise it makes when you use the DVR functions on the remote), it causes an interruption in the audio for whatever I am watching at that moment. I believe this has to do with the way HDMI cables handle audio signals and is not related to the TIVO itself, so it probably wouldn't have been a problem using component cables. I just set the TIVO audio control to silent and it doesn't interfere anymore. The other reason I wanted to upgrade to HD is for the new Netflix streaming video feature. It hasn't started yet (it launches in December), but I can use both Amazon and Jaman to rent movies, TV shows, etc. I prefer this to the cable company's Video On Demand, which requires a cable box and doesn't offer as much variety. When the Netflix is added, TIVO will completely smoke the cable company offerings in this regard!! Overall, I am very happy that I upgraded to the TIVO Series 3 HD!! "Very Unreliable", Ages ago I owned a Replay TV. I loved it, but, I wanted to be able to record HD and more video, so I bought a Media Center PC. The PC was kind of quirky due to Windows limitations (couldn't play back DVD's over component video, for instance), so I decided to give this a try. The quality of video is really great, but, this is probably the most unreliable home theater product I have ever owned. It crashes AT LEAST once a day, for no apparent reason. And there is no power off button, so I have to unplug it, wait a few seconds and then plug it back in. And it takes forever to reboot. The other thing that really annoys me is all the advertising. I pay about $10/month for service and there are tons of ads in the menus. WHAT??? It is great that other services like Rhapsody and Amazon Unbox are integrated. But, how do you archive the video you purchase or record? I guess you could use Tivo to go, but good luck. I've never had it work EVER on my laptop that is only a few months old. I would NEVER EVER buy this again, but, now I'm stuck with it and I prepaid for a year of service. Apple TV combined with Eye TV for the Mac or a cheap USB tv tuner on the PC, is a way better option, plus the recordings go into iTunes/iPod/iPhone pretty easily. "Buyers Beware", I knew about the subscription service but I was surprised to find out that 802.11g connection only works with their network adaptor. I spent another $60 for the adapter. Everything was going well until I found out that Tivo wasn't picking up some of the HD channels that I was receiving on my cable. We decided to return it & cancel the subscription since it came with 30 day cancelation policy. I'm on the phone waiting for 50 mins or so trying to cancel. The firt time I called, the call was just simply disconnected after 20 mins. I'm very disappointed with the way they do business. I'll see how many product reviews I can submit before they finally answer the phone. "TiVo - Love / Hate Relationship ", Ok - here goes ! First - The Love: * TiVo's best feature- its great being able to watching programs on "your" schedule and not the "TV program" schedule. * Skipping thru the junk and commercials is heaven. You can watch 2 or 3 programs using TiVo in the same time you watch one live show. * Menus are easy to use and it's "smart" ! TiVo can find your programs, advise if you have recording conflicts, has a program recommendation feature based on your preferences, can download movies from Amazon and Netflix, watch You Tube, and a whole list of great feature that is growing. * Dual channel HD is very nice and Tivo is addictive ! It will drive you nuts to have to watch a "live" program once your use to Tivo and you will soon be buying another unit once the other member of the family horde in on "your TiVo" - lol. Now the Hate: * DO NOT purchase the lifetime subscription service !! Unless you're a addicted gambler or a fool - there is a very very good chance you will be parted from a huge (400.00) chunk of your wallet. The service subscription is for the life of the "unit" and --- TiVo reliability is abysmal !!! --- Some research on diff web forums as well as TiVo's 30 day replacement (no charge) and 1 yr limited replacement (min of 40.00 charge) will attest to the this. * I bought 2 TiVo HD units and both have failed in the first year. I have read a lot of reviews about folks having units for years with no problems - but beware.. there are also a LOT of units that have had problems, been replaced multiple times, and or just become useless after the 1 year limited warranty is up. * And if you are thinking - Wow what a great rebate ! O-boy... another disaster ! Several calls to customer service, rebate service, tech service, and the janitor and you may finally get it. Let me know cause I'm still waiting. As much as I love the Tivo when its working, I would not recommend this unit to anyone due to very lousy warranty and reliability. And PLEASE don't get sucked into buying a "lifetime" Tivo subscription unless you like just love to gamble or waste money !!! ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "TiVO FAIL", The hard drive on the first unit I had failed within 7 months of purchase. So, you pay to have it replaced...about $50...and TiVo sends you a refurbished model (never mind that they hold the cost of a brand new model on your credit card until they receive your old one in return). The refurbished model they send out crashes and reboots every 10 minutes or so for no apparent reason...just not long enough to download any software patches that may be necessary for it to run smoothly (why they ship the items with old software, who knows?). TiVo FAIL. This product totally blows. "Works as advertised ", The recorder does all it is designed to do but I miss not having a built in DVD recorder as was in my previous TIVO unit. Even if it only recorded SD programming. The subscription price also seems a little exorbitant just because of the switch to HD. "Blows Comcast's box out of the water", I have been a longtime TiVo user, so when I was upgrading to HDTV, I wanted to go for a TiVo HD. The high price had been a barrier to entry for awhile, but the $99 deal with my new Samsung TV was too hard to pass up. The TiVo, as expected does a great job of handling and recording HD content and has all of the same features that you have come to expect from TiVo. Since I'm using the TiVo HD, my Comcast cable bill did not increase when I upgraded to digital/HD since you get one multi stream cable card for free. This product is highly recommended. "Simply Amazing!", I purchased this box after switching from Verizon FIOS to Time Warner cable. As owners of two Series 2 DVRs sitting in a couple of our bedrooms in our house, we decided that we had to go to the Tivo HD DVR in our entertainment room after about 20 minutes of experiencing our new HD DVR from the cable company. Once we received the DVR from Amazon a day later, we had the cable company show up with our new Cable Cards. It took about two hours because the technician wasn't sure what to do with them. After we finally got the signal in through the Tivo, I was very happy to have a Tivo in our main TV viewing area. The features are relatively the same as the Series 2 DVRs but the main advantages were the dual tuners and, of course, HD. I eventually purchased the Western Digital WDG1S5000VN 500GB My DVR Expander eSATA so that we can add more recording capacity and had it the next day from Amazon. The extra space really made the difference for us. The Tivo Recommendations feature which allows your Tivo to record things you might like is one of our favorites. The expanded space on our new Tivo HD gives on average about 100 extra shows that we normally wouldn't catch because we don't really watch live TV anymore. In all, I have no regrets in getting the Tivo HD DVR and would highly recommened this device for those people who want to get away from the lousy HD DVRs supplied by cable and satellite companies (unless, of course, they supply you with a Tivo). "Gray or Partial Recordings.", Two different Tivo HD units I have tried reset their tuners every 4 hours which causes it to stop recording (partial show record) or to lose buffered pause time. The reset is not a full unit reset, it takes less than a minute for this "tuner" reset at which time both tuners go gray screen then come back on what ever channel tuner 1 was on (more proof of not a full reset is if you turn on Tivo's clock display they both come back up with the clock still displaying, a box reset would turn the clock display off). The reset can also cause the gray screen issue (screen is gray only on the channel you are watching, all other channels are OK). Tivo would love for me to believe I am the only one having this problem but the truth is this is common. I am going to return my unit and wait for the day/month/year Tivo finally resolves this issue before I buy another. Until then I am going to use the cable company's dual tuner HD DVR box instead. ![]() |
