"DVD Recorder"
The product appears to be the device that I was expecting to receive, but I have not had the chance to use it and verify quality. I plan to do so in the very near future.

"Wrong Expectations"
I bought this product with high expectations. I am a Sony afficianado (Sony Everything) and will not apologize for it. This product disappoints mainly because
- It chops off the top and the bottom portions of the video from a MiniDV (transfered using a iLink cable). my 4:3 video will look like a 16:9 but I lose picture!! Close upshots lose the forehead and chin while long shots lose the picturesque mountain peaks.
- Video quality using a Sony camcorder supplied A/V cable (Red, White, Yellow) was very bad.
I am returning mine and will wait for another product.

"Great tool for creating DVDs from old movies"
This unit is easy to use in transferring Hi-8 and VHS tapes direct to DVD. Also, another VERY interesting feature is that you can hook up your Hi-8 video camera to the VRDMC5 and switch the video camera on AS IF you were going to record videos on Hi-8 tape. The images that would be taped then immediately show up in the VRDMC5 monitor. I was able to use a Telecine Converter and play old Super 8 movie reels with the Hi-8 camera on and ready to record (but with no Hi-8 tape in it) and the images were captured direct to DVD on the VRDMC5 recorder. This has saved me thousands of dollars I would otherwise have spent with a video conversion service. This is a great investment for anyone with this kind of a project to tackle.

"No sound with a Mono input"
I have an older camcorder (Panasonic PV-L501D) and VCR (Panasonic PV-9400) that have only mono outputs (not stereo). tHe VRD-MC5 will not record any sound from my VHS or VHS-C tapes. I contacted Sony to ask for a software upgrade, but was told they could not provide one. They also told me that they do not guarantee the VRD-MC5 to work with all models of camcorders and VCR's. I will try to find a "Y" RCA male cable to see if providing two input signals, instead of one, will get the sound will work. If it doesn't, I'm sending the VRD-MC5 back to Amazon.

Update: I tried the RCA "Y" cable, but the result was the same: a nice looking picture with no sound. Back it goes -- Amazon makes the return process simple for defective products.

"Makes child's play of copying Hi8 tapes to DVDs!"
This product is simply amazing! It's so easy to use that it's just incredible. I was able to start copying my old Hi8 camcorder tapes to DVDs in literally just minutes. And the results are fabulous! I played back my first DVD on a 52" 1080p LCD TV using a Blu-Ray player and the DVD videos copied from my 12-year old Hi8 tapes looked absolutely magnificent! I couldn't believe my eyes! It has an easy to use menu to guide you quickly through the setup. Aesthetically it's a homely little device, but it's very well laid out, trivially easy to use and quite versatile. And who can beat the great price and speedy delivery from Amazon! I highly recommend this product!

Update: I have now used it to burn an AVCHD-formatted DVD directly from my Sony HDR-SR12 Hi-Def camcorder. This is done via an included USB cable. It turns out that this is even easier than doing a Hi8 to DVD burn, plus you get complete retention of the hi-def recording and it plays on a Blu-Ray player with full 1080 resolution. It even includes the 5.1 surround sound audio from the Sony camcorder. Fantastic result and it only took minutes to do. A regular DVD disk, of course, won't fit very much hi-def content--but still it's terrific quality and very quick and soooo easy to do!

What our customer's say!

"Money well spent!", I accidentally stumbled onto this product. Where has it been. This is exactly what I have been looking for for at least 7 years, a device that will simpley transfer my old (1980's) VHS no definition and transfer them to DVD. It does not get any easier than this. I barely glanced at the instructions and proceeded to copy a DVD. My first one did not have any audio. That was soon rectified by plugging the audio cables in from the player to the copier.(duh)I was copying from a Sony mini DV camcorder. I then pluged the MC5 into a standard VCR as plain as it gets nothing fancy and proceeded to copy one of my old VHS tapes. IT WORKED! The sound and picture were as good as they ever were. The grainy picures and sound were just part of the technolgy we had then. I could not be happier. I have spent over $500 in editing software and seems I was always running into compatabilty issues. My knowlege of computers is limited so they would always get the better of me. If I can just get my VHS tapes on DVD, this product will be worth 10 times what I paid for it. Good job Sony. And thanks to all that submited there reviews. It really was helpfull.

"Easy To Use", I have used the VRDMC5 for about a month now. I run it every 2-3 week days and on weekends, so it's had a lot of use. Got a great price on Amazon! The unit is very easy to use. I first transferred all of my camcorder tapes (taken with a Sony Handycam Digital8 DCR-TRV460) to Sony DVD-R disks with the firewire cable that came with the camcorder. You literally only have to push the buttons to make a few choices and the rest is automatic ... start and stop. It's very nice and not hard to figure out (but I did read the manual ... pretty simple). I record everything at HQ quality, so it takes two disks to record a full tape. Now I have moved on to recording my old VHS tapes. This is a little more work. Transferring a full VHS tape to DVD at HQ quality also requires two disks; 1 hr a piece. The VRDMC5 does not control the VCR player (like it does the camcorder), so you have to be present to stop the VCR when it has transferred the 1st hour of Play from the VHS tape. I set a timer so I know right when to get back to the VRDMC5 to stop the VCR after the 1st hr of play, put another DVD in the recorder, and start the VCR again to record the 2nd hour of tape. It's a little bit of a hassle, but worth it to digitize the tapes. All-in-all, the video quality from recorded DVDs is OK, but I think the colors could be brighter .. like they appear on the MC5 viewing screen during recording. One more thing ..... the Date/Time stamps from a camcorder tape does not transfer to the DVD, but they do for recordings from VHS tapes. I talked to Sony (on-line chat) about this and that's just the way it is. If you want the camcorder Date/Time stamps to transfer, you have to run the signal through a computer. Of course, that defeats the purpose of the MC5. Overall, I recommend the MC5. I can see from VHS tapes that are about 18 years old that, sure enough, they have aged ... the picture is a little fuzzy. More recent recordings transfer to DVD clearly. I wish I had digitized my VHS tapes a long time ago, but at least the MC5 makes it easy to do today!

"Easy to use if you don't do anything unusual...", Plug your camcorder to it with a DV cable, insert a DVD-R and hit the big red button. You can watch it play (no sound) and it ejects the disk when done. What could be easier? Well... that all only works if you are recording 1 hour of tape. If the tape goes on to more than one disk then you are in trouble until you figure out how to manually record and "finalize" the second disk. Also, if you are not using a DV cable then you have to manually record and finalize as well. To "finalize" a disc you have to hit the menu-arrow-enter keys over 10 times. Also, if you hit the "menu" key they you can no longer hit the "big easy red record button". All this weirdness and poor menu interface is the reason I gave it just 3 stars. It records just fine.

Yes, you can set the "record quality" (which adjusts how many minutes of video can be recorded on the disc) to ensure an entire tape can be transferred to one DVD.

I wish Sony had done some things to make using this a lot more user friendly:

1) Add a "finalize and eject" button
2) Make access to the "record quality" menu since I, at least, spend a lot of time switching back and forth.
3) Handle spanning multiple discs automatically (by allowing me to hit the record button again with the second disc to continue and finalize)

"Totally Perfect!", This great little gadget works the first time, all the time, every time. And NO computer is required. Can you imagine trying to transfer a VHS tape to DVD with a PC involved! That would never happen. This stand alone unit is the way to go. Oh yes, it is SUPER easy to use.

"A great way to get organized.", I purchased this unit a month ago and I'm very pleased with it. At last I have an easy way to transfer my old VHS tapes to DVD. It's also a snap to turn digital photo's from your camera's memory card into a slide show on DVD. This product does everything they say it will do! I highly recommend it.

"SONY DVDirect", Disappointed that the memories cards readers do not transfer video, it for photo only. The USB only recognize SONY camcorders.

"FINALLY I CAN TRANSFER MY 8MM TO DVD.", Up until now I have had no way to share my videos with my children, friends and other family members. Not everyone has a 8mm player. But every one has a DVD player. This little machine is so cool and simple to operate that I was able to select what I wnted to put on a DVD for each individual person. How much better this makes it for me!! I also live in Texas where tapes (VHS and 8mm) grow mold on them and you lose alot of video tape that way. This way I can transfer to a disc before the tape is moldy. I have lost many memories on tape due to the mold..Thank you so much for this great creation... God bless Nola

"Good but not as good as VCD-VC20", I use the Sony VRDMC5 to burn dvds from the DVR or from VHS tapes. The VRDMC5 makes excellent dvds of 2 hours length or shorter, but it has consistently failed to make a complete dual layer recording of a longer movie or show. For some reason, it shuts down before the end of the movie or show. This makes this model much less desirable than its predecessor: the VCD-VC20. I still have one working VCD-VC20 (more than 5 years old) and it still produces excellent regular and dual layer dvds. The VRDMC5 also appears to be more discriminating than the VCD-VC20. Where the latter records on virtually every blank dvd (+R and -R), my VRDMC5 records exclusively on +R blank dvds.

"Freedom from the PC!", This is great! No more using the computer and waiting forever to see the movies. It's just great. Buy it!

"Very easy to use!", This DVD recorder is very easy to use even for someone like me who is electronically impaired.
