Others say...
"The Society of Suicides" My, how fairy tales have changed. This is as odd--and arresting and effective and memorable--as a good Tom Waits song. (How interesting to see him cast in this movie, still a carnival barker--but now barking for The Force at the top of the Ferris wheel.) There are surprisingly few moments when this funky, challenged, pieced-together tale--just like the old Toyota Camry which co-stars in this film--doesn't deliver. Enjoy the ride (and, please, stay on this side of suicide.) "Fresh Air on Your DVD" Sure, you see the end coming from way off and it has big-time echoes of Defending Your Life and even more so of the great Japanese film After Life, but Wristcutters for most of its under 90 minutes has it all -- wit, acting, an ugly and barren netherlife for suicides, and in it all something original and sobering to say about life and the deliberate loss of it. Can you really resist a movie whose protagonist says, "Soon after I killed myself I got a job at Kamikaze Pizza," or that the place he winds up is pretty much like living except just a little worse. It is a world of no smiles (and the cast stays true to that) and no stars, but apparently endless supplies of gas stations in bleak vistas. And if all that's not enough it's got Tom Waits, Gob from Arrested Development as the Messiah, and a long almost forgotten Del Shannon song, Cry Myself to Sleep, on the soundtrack. Not to be missed. "Amazing" This movie is amazing, it has the wonderful quirky quality that you would expect from any indie film. The dry humor is to die for, no pun intended. And if you are a fan of Gogol Bordello, this movie is for you! I watched it once over my PayPer View, and bought it the very next day. This is one of the greatest movies of this time, and definitely the most unique. It will not disappoint. "Great unique concept!" An excellent, unique twist on a drama/comedy that explores the idea of an alternate world for those unfortunate souls who choose suicide as a way to 'check-out' on life. The quirky 'dead world' of the wrist cutters becomes a more bizarre journey when a young man finds out his girlfriend committed suicide shortly after he did and resides somewhere in the world of the dead. In his quest to find her, he learns more about himself and life in general, especially from the individuals he meets along the way. This is a strange journey for the viewer, but worth the unusual ride. Excellent music and a fantastic performance by Tom Waits and others. I'm glad they changed the ending from the original short story...the screen version appeals more to my romantic 'happy endings' appetite. Eugene Hutz is also another favorite of mine, for his musical and acting talents. Chrissy K. McVay - Author "Meh" Somehow after seeing all the previews I expected more from this movie. I expected it to be really funny and clever. This idea of an afterlife for people who kill themselves is intriguing. I was greatful that the movie doesn't try to be laugh-out-loud funny, but it ends up dragging a bit. It also tries too hard to be bittersweet and charming.

What our customer's say! "Def Good Flick! ", Love the movie... The Russian rocks... Not the typical love story. Good buy. "A Love Story in Purgatory", This was a really fun, odd, charming, and bizarre indie movie. Right up my alley! Loved the story premise, and the odd cast of characters. An uplifting movie about suicide and purgatory...who would have figured? Being a Tom Waits fan, it was also great to see him and hear his music in the movie. I loved it, I'll probably buy this on DVD. Very similar feel to the movies of Jim Jarmusch or Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki...a couple of my favorites. Highly recommended for fans of those writers/directors. "I loved this movie.", While the production standards for this indie film where not very high, it is remarkably original, witty and endearing. I also loved the cast and the original soundtrack to this film. The film offers us hope, even after we have given up on hope. "Refreshing!", I loved this movie. Whenever I mention the title to anyone, they kind of make a face. And I follow it up with, "No no, it's a really good film. It's a love story. With a lot of dark humor." No body really gets it until they watch it though. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone but it's a very touching story. I haven't read the story it was based on, but I'll have to now. "Bad movie", I regret purchasing this movie. First the title, then after watching it for 10 minutes, you have no clue as to what is happening. 10 thumbs down ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Interesting and clever ...", Great INDIE film!!! Love Shannyn Sossamon!! Great move to watch on a chill day when in the mood for something different. ""Do I Look Asymmetrical to You?" ...", Wristcutters - A Love Story is a road-trip film with a twist: think Everything Is Illuminated but in another (dim) dimension for those who commit suicide in "our world." What you need to know ... I went into this film expecting "big things," which was a rookie-mistake. I quickly became frustrated with the poor film-quality and the overall low-budget feel. However, once I let go of those judgments, I was able to enjoy the film for what it is, an indie fairytale for "weirdos" (like me). Overall, the casting is delightful. You may recognize Patrick Fugit (Zia) from his brief stint on ER - Ninth Season. Stuck in this stagnant "purgatory," Zia seeks his former girlfriend (who also committed suicide shortly after him). His road-tripping friends include a "kooky" Russian and a "spunky" gal who got stuck in this dull world by accident (played by A Knight's Tale Shannyn Sossamon). Granted a bit-part, Azura Skye is (yet again) a suicide victim (reprising her role in the frighteningly bad 28 Days). In a strange way, it's a relief to see her reclaim that (lame) role and do something genuinely interesting with it! Will Arnett's appearance was a pleasant surprise (and provided a nice spin to the story) ... it was entirely refreshing for him to tackle a role that isn't necessarily funny (in contrast to his work on Arrested Development, 30 Rock, and in Blades of Glory). The writing was fantastic!! The ennui of this alternate world is palpable. (I have already ordered Etgar Keret's The Bus Driver Who Wanted To Be God & Other Stories which contains the short-story "Kneller's Happy Campers" from which the film was adapted.) Now, occasionally, the writing feels "awkward" but this is the result of some stunningly "bad" (read: low-budget) graphics (especially the "black hole" scenes). Don't fight these moments and you will enjoy the film. The conclusion solidified the fairytale feel ... and, though both predictable and extraordinarily problematic, I found it somewhat gratifying. I genuinely wish that Dukic was granted better funding (this is rough even for an indie) ... but, as is, Wristcutters is worth your attention (if only for the fact that psychologists were "up in arms" over the film!!) Suggested Reading: Keret, Etgar (and artist Asaf Hanuka). Pizzeria Kamikaze. Gainesville: Alternative Comics, 2006. "Suicide: It Ain't For Sissies!", Thinking about suicide? Think again. And watch WRISTCUTTERS: A LOVE STORY before you pull out that razor blade, swallow those pills, or pop that gun barrel into your mouth. The world beyond is not what you want! Zia (Patrick Fugit) is so depressed about his girlfriend leaving him, he feels he cannot go on. One slit of the wrists and it's bye-bye boy. But what lay beyond for Zia? Well, it ain't any prettier. In fact, it's downright depressing. No laughter. No smiles. An empty road full of empty lives lay ahead. Or so it seems. Zia runs into another lost soul named Eugene (Shea Whigham, Tigerland) who has a car and the two spark up an unusual relationship. Zia pines only for his lost love Desiree (Leslie Bibb, Talladega Nights) while Eugene wanders aimlessly (or so it seems) through this netherworld. That is, until Zia finds out that Desiree has committed suicide, too! Yes! Love cannot be denied, even in this depressing purgatory. But how to find her? Of course. Road trip! Zia and Eugene set out to find Desiree but run into several speed-bumps. Headlights that don't work. No air conditioning. And even a black hole that exists under the passenger's seat that swallows up sunglasses or anything else dropped in its direction. But none of this prepares Zia for his run-in with Mikal (Shannyn Sossamon, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang), another lost soul that they find hitchhiking along an empty road. But Mikal claims she didn't commit suicide, and is looking for the people that "run this place." The journeys of the threesome interlock in unusual ways, including a romance that will play itself out in the end of all ends. Most interesting about Wristcutters is that symbolism plays a huge role. And that symbolism is actually quite funny. The fact that no one is able to smile is very funny considering the circumstances surrounding the deaths of those that are in this unhappy place. Parasailers are seen as enforcement officers (archangels?) And whoever does run this place doesn't want these souls to leave (which includes allowing suicides to happen a second time). There are also entire families of suiciders who help prove that mental illness can be genetic. And Eugene's death by pouring "Dead Guy Ale" over his electric guitar is something that is sure to elicit chuckles from just about everyone. Eugene is not as he seems ("You must have friends in high places") nor is just about everyone in the film. The ending certainly makes this abundantly clear (which I won't spoil for those who decide to watch this). But I will say that I'm glad they decided to go with the ending on the DVD and not the alternate; that would've been TRULY depressing instead of depressingly funny. Even with its dark comedy, Wristcutters isn't going to be for everyone. The comedy isn't in your face or, sometimes, even self-evident. Occasionally you have to dig deep to find the witticisms but find them you will. There are some weak points to the film, most notably the production standards and some of the very lame sets, but these can be overlooked (if somewhat difficultly) by enjoying the deathly guffaws. "life sucks and death is worse", But just as things can get worse, they can also get better. Two young people wandering around looking for something, some kind of meaning, explanation, closure, love... They find each other and in that way they find what they were looking for. It's a film for my generation. Living a young adult's life (or any life) in the modern world does suck. But love still exists. And smiles too. "Don't Waste Your Time", I could not believe how horrible the movie was. The trailor looked great, I thought "What a clever idea for a movie!". I was so utterly disappointed. The only reason I finished it, was in the hopes that the end would have some interesting twist. We had to fight not to fall asleep the entire way through. It had a twist, but it was not interesting or thought-provoking in any way. I wish I could have the hours of my life back! ![]() |
