Others say...
"Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple" The Odd Couple (2008, Warner Bros.) Gnarls Barkley's second studio album. ***1/2 In 2006, Gnarls Barkley released St. Elsewhere, an album so fresh and so needed that everyone held their breath for a follow-up album, hoping that the collaboration between singer Cee-Lo and producer "Danger Mouse" Burton was not a one-off affair. Thankfully, 2008 delivered the goods. The Odd Couple is not as pleasing as St. Elsewhere, with one too many songs that don't quite live up to what is expected of these two. However, it is not without its share of masterpieces. "Run," the obvious first single, is without a doubt the best song on either of their albums, with its vintage sounds of the 50's and 60's rock and soul. Cee-Lo belts like he never has before, again proving he is probably the most soulful singer of the twenty-first century. His voice, as powerful as Little Richard's and just as similar to the 80's singer Sylvester (Not the cartoon cat, the "Do You Wanna Funk?" guy) is integral to the feel of every song. In fact, that whole feel carries on throughout the album, showing up again in stars on the also-amazing track "Surprise," complete with "baapbaa" chorus from God knows where. And it's this difference, the production that makes it feel like Little Richard music in the digital age, that is the profound mark of change between St. Elsewhere and The Odd Couple. Beyond that, there isn't much that has changed. This, however, is not a problem in the slightest, as the sound is still so fresh that as long as the music is good, the style can go on forever. (Run, Surprise) "Dissappointed" I saw these guys on SNL and was blown away. I must have been pretty loaded at the time because the CD sure doesn't come across with the same energy. "kitschy sheds its petals" I liked Gnarls better back when he used to sell me copies of "Grit" magazine and cut my hoop nets when I was looking toward the fire he'd set in my wastebasket. Now, he's whooping it up like a sitcom diversion, jibberjabbing like a simian slutdive bellhop. I like mockingbirds in a guilty way when they don't know I'm awake, spying on their mating chatter. But this, this by nature is grandiose, cellular, predisposed, grating. And I'm having a major case of deja vu. Does it even matter anymore? We're an expendable society, so why not embrace polymers? Why not kill all the fish? But I plodded on, wondering what this "soup of the day" really was. Were those bits of carrot or flesh wounds? And it didn't matter because we had techmologicalized. We were pushing buttons now and DNA-approved to gain access to pay-per-view oxygen. We evolved through hope and memory loss. By the time I reached "Whatever," I really didn't care, which provided perhaps the finest moment of this failed experiment -- a time-transcendent conversation with Gnarls truly, wrapped in tusks of irony. But I still didn't know the way out of this cardboard box jungle -- the bird, strangled by glory-trolling, decaying in uncaptured sunshine. "You Gotta Be Kidding me" Is this stuff music? Sounds like a bunch of drug heads going on a road trip. Please, give me a break. This stuff is not music. A child can make noise but you expect more from adults calling themselves artist or musicians. I purchased this junk based on a recommendation from Sound & Vision Magazine. What a mistake. As I listened, I started doing paperwork because it was so horrible sounding and boring. Then this mess became like torture. Couldn't finish listening to this trash. This should be listed under miscellaneous instead of music. How it can be considered music, I have no idea. "Best CD of 2008 so far" This is a wonderful album, one of the best I've heard so far this year. Someone mentioned it's like psychedelic soul. Give it a try. And if you happen to catch Gnarls Barkley playing on SNL in reruns, you'll be blown away.

What our customer's say! "No Slump For This Couple ", So okay, this second effort is not as good as the first one, but solid none the less. Its like the girl who looks really hot at the club and then you get to see her on Wednesday out and about. Without the dark lights she may not look as good but still worth serious consideration. Take this album home and you'll see where I'm coming from. ""Is it possible you were hurting worse than me?"", Gnarls Barkley's second album is a good step forward for the duo. It's not what I'd call better than their debut, but it's hard to say it's worse, and it's definitely more focused. It's not quite as fun, but it's still plenty entertaining. There aren't any crazy songs like "Transformer", but they still have some fun in between some more depressing and downbeat songs. Despite the shift in tone, it's identifiably the same band, with Danger Mouse coming up with some great beats and Cee-Lo providing nice R&B vocals. Nothing is as immediately grabbing and infectious as "Crazy", but few songs ever written are. The album's without a single standout song, but almost all of them are good enough to keep the album enjoyable all the way through. Some enjoyable moments are the female vocals in "Charity Case", the chorus in "Run (I'm a Natural Disaster)", and the hand claps and backing choir in "Surprise". "Who's Gonna Save My Soul" has a great music video, and is a very good song, with a morose but memorable beat and nice chorus. "Open Book" sounds almost tribal, but has a syncopated rhythm keeping it modern and some powerful singing. "Blind Mary" is the record's lightest-hearted song, and a pretty catchy one. "Neighbors" also has nice vocal work. It's a pretty consistent album, it just doesn't quite reach their previous effort's heights. They've stated they're only going to create one more album, so I hope it continues to evolve their sound as much as this did. "Greeaaaaaattttttttttt!", I love this CD! Its kinda a psychadellic, rock mix. Each song is just long enough not to bore you. "good not great", The CD works excellent but...the case was cracked when I got it and I don't think it was because of the sipping. So....good but not a great experience. "Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple 7/10", The Odd Couple is an appropriate name for Gnarls Barkley's latest album; the collaboration between mash-up extraordinaire Danger Mouse and eccentric rapper Cee-Lo Green is anything but normal. The Odd Couple continues St. Elsewhere's Grammy-winning formula of horror-cinema beats and off-the-wall rhymes, but not much else. Gnarls Barkley has never been a duo that shied away from taking chances, and The Odd Couple is no exception. Cee-Lo sounds like a fiery gospel singer on "Run (I'm A Natural Disaster)" and the beats sound like nothing else on rap radio, such as the slow jam, 9-mm-reloading sounds of "Would Be Killer." Nevertheless, despite the two's ambitious innovations, one could listen to St. Elsewhere and The Odd Couple and consider the two records interchangeable. If you hated "Crazy," chances are you'll hate this album, too, but don't think that will stop Gnarls from continuing to freak out mainstream hip-hop. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "There ARE down sides to instant succes, but great nonetheless", Were this to be the first release by Gnarls Barkley, I would give it 5 stars without question. It has a good mix of mo-town grooves with a modern spin that gives it an edge that is very desireable (just like their first release) in this day of regurgitated crap that all sounds the same. That being said, this is not the first release by the duo and so, they must contend with the stunning succes of their damn-near-perfect St. Elsewhere. Still, its a good album and I checked 5 stars though that is rounded up from 4.5 stars. It really isn't that there is anything wrong with this album. It is an excellent effort with all of the desired qualities that made the first effort so wondeful. To be honest, in my humble opinion, this album doesn't really contain any standouts (as opposed to the freshman effort which had "Smiley Faces", "Just a Thought", "Who Cares", and of course, the world-renowned "Crazy"), though it is a thorough and solid effort that deserves a listen; it just doesn't have anything REALLY special like the first album did (but don't let that take anything away from what they have done here; it is really daggone good). This pair, Danger Mouse & Cee-Lo, have put out a strong somphomore effort that is deservedly receiveing attention and rave reviews. The fact that it is not quite "St. Elsewhere" is immaterial. These guys set the bar too high with their first album, but that should not be punishable by 1 star reviews, rather, it should be praised, as should this album, for keeping up the quality while not just remixing the first effort. So, to sum up, St. Elsewhere is still the better of the 2 albums, but if you like that album, this shouldn't dissapoint. Don't listen to the naysayers and morons that wanted an exact repeat of St. Elsewhere. That is what is wrong with music today; it all sounds the same and people want it all to sound the same; it's so freekin' boring. Damned if you do, damned if you don't; I guess. Don't hold it against these guys that they EVOLVED a little and DIDN'T rely solely on what they had already done; some of the reviewers are complaining, that is really what people mean if they say that this isn't St. Elsewhere and give it 1 or 2 stars. I definitely think this is worthy of the legend that will be known as Gnarls Barkely. I only hope that they have something special lined up for their third release; it's gonna get tougher and tougher for these guys to keep producing at the high level which they have now maintained through 2 albums. They have the opportunity to really be something special; let's hope it happens. "Perfection", The Odd Couple is an excellent follow up to St. Elsewhere. The sounds are very poetic and uncompromisingly original. Cee-Lo's voice is unique and has certainley fueled the hypnotic appeal of the album. I can't stop playing it.Gnarls Barkley has to keep "Going On" "Great album "reduction" by Danger Mouse.", I would not call this album heavily produced..."reduced" is more like it. The basic production really gives Cee-Lo's lyrics room to shine. And shine they do. My son has called 'Blind Mary', "perfect". Songs like 'She Knows', 'Open Book' and 'Surprise' really give you an insight to just how good Cee-lo is with the lyrics. It is a mellower album than St. Elsewhere. So if you are looking for something really uptempo, this album as a whole may not do it for you. "Disappointment", Following up on a success is never easy, but now I know why this album was so cheap....don't buy it! "I can't turn it off!", Now normally as a rule I do not review music, because my taste in music is so odd that a reader following my reviews would be quite upset with me. I listen to everything, and I have completely different reasons why I listen to them, the reason I listen to Gnarls Barkley is because it is an excellent soundtrack to my life, esp. when driving. I almost didn't review it because of the looks I have given myself over past reviews made about music that were more like ramblings over some cute guy. At 25 cuteness is no longer a factor, and if it is at 25 I should never tell anyone that. But this cd is so good I had to leave a few thoughts. Its so simple, its delicious. It throws back to songs that make you want to do the monkey and I felt like buying a couple of vintage go go boots and get down. At the same time he speaks on some complex, well not so complex emotions, like being a teen alone in the world ( I was one of those once) about people envying you and not knowing what you sacraficed to get there. About self love, self hate, and helping people just to make yourself feel good. You may not think you'll like it, but you will, this music is so universal. I wish I could be more complex about it, but its just good music, like their first album, you can listen to it over and over and never get tired of it and never feel like its old. ![]() |
