Others say...
"Good Value" Good picture quality, useful upsampling ability which looks good on my 52" LCD. Annoyingly slow at loading and accessing the disc. Definitely good for the price though. The ability to make it region-free sold it for me. "Disappointing" The first one I received simply stopped working after three weeks. Amazon was great about replacing it, but the second unit has not impressed me either. Even with the output set to 720p, it is not unusual to see the picture "band" for a second during action scenes. Just as Batman is swooping in or the armies of Mordor begin to descend, the image breaks up into zebra-stripe-like bands for a moment. I would say that I see this happen about once every other movie. I'm honestly considering going back to my old reliable DVD player. It may not upscale, but it always maintains solid picture quality. "Great Picture Quality." When I bought this DVD player for my new 42" Samsung TV I was skeptical that it really improves the quality of my DVDs! Boy I was WRONG!! The Quality of the DVDs were never better almost HD quality. I just watched my old "HELLBOY" dvd on it and it was never better, just superb. There is just only one annoying little problem. Everytime I insert a dvd i have to change the resolution. I like watching in 1080p. If there any of you guys who know how to make this setting permanent. I alreay tried the setting menu! STILL THIS IS A GREAT PLAYER !! "Great interim DVD solution" I know that I'll have to spring for BluRay eventually, but for now, this does a great job on our new large HD TV. The upconvert makes a standard definition DVD look virtually HD; it plays absolutely every modern format, including computer-burned DVDs; the price is unbeatable; the HDMI jack allowed the simplest and best connection to the TV; installation is a cinch; it may be my imagination, but the remote seems to be more powerful than my other remotes, and doesn't require a signal enhancer to work through the cabiner door. "HDMI Interface does not work when connected to Samsung LN37550A LCD TV" The HDMI interface on this player does not work properly when connected to a Samsung LN37550A LCD TV (and perhaps other Series 5 TVs from Samsung.) I have updated the firmware provided by Samsung for both the LN37550A LCD TV and this Samsung 1080P8 DVD Player, but the problem persists. While it is nice that the Samsung website provides easy access to updated firmware, it is unfortunate that neither update corrected the problem. I would also warn you that the firmware update released for the DVD player was incorrectly packaged and could not be installed using the only file provided by Sumsung. The update supplied lacked a required ancillary file, (which can be obtained from the update supplied for a different model DVD player.) Samsung's internal technical support was unaware of the problem and unwilling to investigate and correct the problem. Instead, the only solution offered was to charge the customer $10 plus shipping for an update CD. Fortunately, relying upon my 30 years of computer experience, I was able to work around the techincal problem and avoid paying $10 for an update that ultimately does not correct the problem. So, unless you enjoy goofing around with this kind of stuff and don't mind if things work or not, you should avoid this DVD player. The component output interface on the DVD Player works fine, however without an operational HDMI interface, you cannot use the AnyNET feature, which enables one remote control to control the TV and the DVD player. Furthermore, the component output may not support the upscaling feature, which is probably the only other reason to choose this player.

What our customer's say! "painfully slow and unresponsive", I have several Samsung monitors and a Samsung HDTV, which I love. I figured I'd get the Samsung DVD player for its interoperability (and up-converting, of course). I've used it for 6 months and will be getting a replacement for Christmas. Pros: good video Cons: unbelievably slow: 20 seconds to boot and open, another 20 to close and load. Remote responsiveness is very poor and, get this, the fast-forward options are 2X, 4X and 64X! Fast-fowarding 2 minutes requires either 30 seconds or 2 seconds. The "2" would be fine if the remote responded but, since it doesn't, you more often shoot WAY past your target. In short, fast-forwarding is very painful. "Good product", This DVD player is excellent when paired to a good HD tv. The video Quality is very near that of Blue Ray. The only negative thing I have to say is that the remote response and menu navigation is very slow. Though, this is very tolerable given the quality of the picture. Over all, I would buy this again. "old movies like new again", recently purchased a 1080p hdtv and wanted some of my older dvds to really look nice on the screen w/out having to make the costly transition to bluray; certainly does the job - pictures are crisp, clear and there are few to no movement artifacts. good processing leads to good 1080p conversion. "You get what you pay for! In this case not much.", We bought this DVD player to be used with a new Samsung 19" TV in our small RV as well as on a screened porch. We bought the campanion DVD in the same brand for campatibity. The DVD is cheap. The sound volume is poor even with HDMI cabling. On several ocassions the play back has be poor, but by moving the unit and using another plug it has worked. It seems to have some problems with self-recored DVDs -- skipping and screen going black for 1-2 seconds. Most of the problems have been in the RV, except for the sound. In the RV the sound is not a supreme issue as we are within 6 feet of the TV. Samsung support gets a mixed review. I called them 3 times about the volume issue. Once I was told to reconnect it. After several attempts I used a HMDI cable which did make some improvement. The second call was transferred to the DVD "department" because since the TV worked it had to be the DVD player. Ultimately in the conversation I was disconnected. The last call resulted in a suggestion to reset the DVD player. This did help a bit. I would not recommend this player. It is also very slow to respond to the remote. So slow in fact you think you didn't do anything. "Failed", The DVD-1080P8 was provided free with the purchase of my Samsung LNT2653H HDTV, as part of an Amazon promotion. After playing a total of three or four DVDs over a period of a few months, it now refuses to load any DVD. When I attempt to load a disk, the drawer closes and the player struggles mightily for several minutes (I can hear the motor spooling up and down, thumping noises and other interesting mechanical effects) before finally admitting defeat and displaying "No Disk" on the front panel. I did not experience the HDMI interface problems others have reported, and appreciate the simplification provided by replacing separate audio and component cables with a single HDMI cable. Aside from that convenience, I really saw little picture improvement over the ten year old Toshiba progressive scan player it replaced (which has now resumed it's place in my entertainment center) which still functions perfectly. Samsung's standard warranty only covers labor for the first thirty days, and requires that I ship the player to their New Jersey repair facility at my expense. Since the combined cost of shipping and labor will undoubtedly exceed the current price of a new unit ($65.00 on Amazon), the DVD-1080P8 is an essentially disposable device. As an engineer, it would not surprise me to find that the same unreliable disk mechanism is used in their other products, such as Blu-ray disk players, since such commonality is a common cost-saving design strategy. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Good product for the price", As a home theatre in a box at around $220, it performs well. But don't expect a blow you away experience. Having moved from an seperate componet system (Denon/Polk Audio) to an HT in a box unit left me a little disappointed. The sound quality, seperation of channels...are acceptable but not great. It is the tradeoff you make for this price range and convenience. "Works well!", I have been using it for a month now and am still impressed with the quality. I have a Samsung TV as well and they work well together. I would recommend to anyone with an HD TV and looking for a low cost DVD player. "Great DivX Player & 1080p Upconversion!", This is a short & sweet review... Buy this DVD player now! No explanation needed, well maybe just a couple. DivX playback is great (no skipping) & upconversion quality is awesome. "sleek and functional", DVD player works great. Plugged it into HDTV and it enhanced the DVD and delivered a great picture. At only 3/4 of an inch or so in depth, fits great with the components on my shelf. Would recommend it to anyone. "WORTH THE $45.00", works good, has hdmi-not too many other bells and whistles, but plays movies , looks clear ![]() |
