"Toaster Oven"
We purchased this unit to replace a DeLonghi toaster oven we had for years. We used that unit hard as both a toaster and a broiler/oven. When it came time to replace it, we knew it would be with another DeLonghi. We are pleased with the performance of this unit and recommend it to those who want a toaster oven that has a solid manufacturer's reputation behind it. For the price, we don't think you could find a better performing product. We've used most of its features and have no complaints. As with any product, pay attention to how you use it and follow the instructions. We find that the unit actually toasts a lot quicker than our old model. We like that the broiler has a built-in timer which automatically shuts off after 15 minutes, more than adequate for our purposes. The only downside is that this model didn't come with the tool to pull out the rack like our old unit, so it's a little more awkward, especially when using the broiler.

"Could be much better"
Small size and some other nice features, but some flaws. Toast is much darker on top than on bottom. Door will not open fully, which makes it difficult to pull out shelf (especially when hot!).
Glass door gets very hot - not a good choice if there are children in the house.

"excellent little toaster oven"
I have looked for a small, nice-looking, RELIABLE toaster oven for a long time. After reading the overwhelmingly positive reviews for this one, I decided to go for it. It's just what I wanted - it toasts and broils great, and it's attractive enough to leave out on the counter. The price was just right too.

Well, okay - it WOULD be nice if the toaster rack slid out automatically like other toaster ovens, but I knew of that flaw going in. So I keep a wooden chopstick in a nearby drawer and use that to pull out the rack or to grab the toast. That does the trick - not elegant, but it works and I can live with it.

"The little toaster that could...."
Used to have the big, pricey DeLongi oven (convection, et al.) It lost a heating element and was no longer supported. So I bought a new one. This time I got the smaller, cheaper, little 'kid brother' model. The DO400, 1400 watt.

It turns out that it toasts, bakes and broils just fine. Not quite as nice as the bigger one, but its not the bigger (pricier) one. Also my wife likes the smaller counter top footprint.

It has electronic controls which I like. It does heat quickly and my initial experience is that you want to watch it closely, because it does heat up a storm and will burn the food if your not careful. The older one, for example, always needed the default toaster setting (4 1/2 minutes). The little guy definitely needs to be ratcheted down two steps (3 1/2 minutes)to not burn the toast. It's a nuisanse having to remember to set the timer to a shorter setting, but so much for saving on the purchase price.

The oven burned the first pass at warming a small (6 inch diameter) frozen pizza. But with the next one I caught on quickly, watched it carefully, and timed it toward the lower end of the suggested time (9 to 11 minutes) and it was fine.

Minor complaints: There is no light inside the oven making it hard to watch the cooking. Second trivial complaint, crumb tray latches very - not tight - so you want to be sure it's closed after emptying it.

So, I haven't really learned to love my DO400 yet, but we're learning to get along and I think, as we get to know each other better, we'll get along just fine.

"Don't call it a toaster if it sucks at making toast"
When my 10+ yr old basic toaster oven kicked the bucket, I went looking for a replacement. I consider a toaster oven a versatile toaster. It can make toast, but also warm, heat, and cook other small items that you either don't want to nuke, or don't need to fire up a full sized oven for. But first and foremost, it should make toast; I mean that's its raison d'etre.

Most of the inexpensive (<$50) toaster ovens I looked at seemed to be of really cheap or poor quality: very thin sheet metal, cheap looking plastic controls and finish, door hinges that looked ridiculously weak, etc.

The next tier of toaster ovens start much closer to $100 and go up from there. They have a lot of features I don't care about, like rotisseries or convection fans.

When I finally ran across this model it looked promising. It was more expensive than the real cheapos and it included unneeded features like a digital clock (something else to continuously suck energy when not in use), but the build quality looked notably better than many other ovens in its class.

Tried out a bagel on its maiden voyage. The oven has 7 settings for toast darkness, so I started with the middle setting of 4. The bagel was smoldering before it was done. After that failure, I tried another on the lightest setting, 1. Again, before it was even done it was very dark and beginning to burn.

I see from other reviews here that this is not uncommon so it's unlikely that I just got a lemon. I find it hard to believe the manufacturer ever actually tested this appliance for its intended purpose.

What our customer's say!

"NICE IF YOU ENJOY CHARRED TOAST!", THIS OVEN IS FEATURE LADEN, UNFORTUNATELY I USE IT PRIMARILY AS A TOASTER FOR BREAD, WAFFELS, ETC. AND AT ITS LOWEST SETTING IT CHARS TOAST. I FIND IT VERY UNSATISFACTORY TO HAVE TO STAND RIGHT AT THE TOASTER AND STARE AT THE ITEM BEING TOASTED TO PREVENT BURNING. ADDITIONALLY, I CONTACTED DELONGHI ON THEIR WEB-SITE FOR QUESTIONS AND HAVE RECEIVED NO RESPONSE OR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT WHAT-SO-EVER.

"Happy Toasting", I read your reviews before I purchased this item. I happen to like bread, bagels, etc. well done. Many of the reviews said that even on the lowest setting, the bread, etc. was too dark. I guess these people don't like toast because I like my bread dark and used the lowest setting and it is too light for me. So far I have been enjoying my new toaster oven. I especially like the compact design so it doesn't take up the whole counter. The only thing that I don't like is when we have a power outage, I have another clock to reset!!!!

"Small, versatile, and nicely designed", I am really happy with this toaster oven.
Pros:
- Toasts, bakes and broils evenly
- Warms up quickly
- Includes broiler pan
- Nice looking
- Doesn't take up a lot of space
- Oven rack has two positions (high or low)
- Roomy inside (4 slices of pizza fit well)
- It has a clock
- Tray can sit on top of oven when you're not using it

Cons:
- Must toast at lowest level (T1) which is not the default (T4 is, and I've never used it)
- Can't set machine defaults
- Beeping noise oven makes when pressing buttons is unnecessary and kind of loud; no option to turn sound off

"Smalll footpring, accurate little oven", This oven looks good, bakes accurately, takes up a small space on the counter. Easy to use electronic controls and timer. Just don't expect to put a 12" pizza in it. 4 bagel halves or 4 biscuits is about the limit.

"Only Problems!", Initially I was a little disappointed in the small size. I agree that it was my fault for not researching things better. The 2nd issue is that this oven burns bread and bagels even on the lowest setting. The final and worst problem is that it started failing after less than 2 months while displaying "err". This happens repeatedly even after unplugging and reconnecting the oven. It works for a little while and then fails again. Seems like a lemon to me!

"Does what it needs to do....", There is nothing phenomenal about this toaster oven, but it works well. I have used my grandmother's old toaster oven for the past five years (it was probably about ten years old when I got rid of it). But it seems they don't make toaster ovens like they used to. After looking at a TON of amazon toaster oven products, and talking to a sales person at Sears, even the high-priced ones aren't up to par with the old ones we all grew up with.

That being said, this one does the job well. So far, I have made toast, bread rolls, taco shells, and reheated pizza. I have also used it to keep food warm from the oven when I need to put something else in there. It seems to cook things well, and evenly. My only cooking-related gripe is the same as other reviewers...the lowest toaster setting is still way too much. I like that it toasts quickly, but if you let the whole T1 setting runs it's course, your toast will burn.

It is a sturdy appliance, and I appreciate how small it is, so that it fits on my counter without feeling bulky, while still having capacity for four pieces of toast. It looks very nice...has a sleek finish to it. The functions are very easy to use, but I agree with other reviewers that the beeping sound when you push any button is annoying. I also, like others, have had trouble with the rack sliding in easily...it's too snug of a fit.

Overall, I would recommend this product. Just don't expect the toaster oven you remember your mom using. They don't make those anymore!

"Returned Before Using", I was replacing a DeLonghi I've had for many years. I was disappointed in the DeLonghi DO400 because is was smaller and lower quality than the one I was replacing. I decided to return it before using. I reordered another toaster oven. DeLonghi DO400 1400-Watt Digital Control 4-Slice Toaster Oven

"Burns Toast", I like the toaster as far as it being the perfect size, nice looking, and easy to clean. The only negative is the pre-programmed settings. Toast is too dark when it's set to the lightest setting. I have to watch the clock on the toaster to know when to take it out.......most of the time I'm busy and we eat very dark toast.

"Nice looking, good quality and simple to use", This is a nice looking, easy to use and fast toaster oven. I use it often and I am happy with it. I preferred this over other for its digital control and look to match with the rest of the stuffs in my kitchen.

"TOASTER OVEN", I REPLACED MY TOASTER OVEN WITH A NEWER VERSION. I FIND THE CONTROLS DIFFICUT TO USE. I HAVE TROUBLE WITH THE TIMER IN PARTICULAR. THE OLDER VERSION WAS SIMPLER .
THE DOOR SLAMS SHUT TOO READILY AND THE GLASS COULD BREAK. I AM DISAPPOINTED IN THIS MODEL. YOU NEED TO REDESIGN THIS MODEL.
