"40 bucks for a plastic trash can?", My last trash can was an expensive, stainless can with an inner liner, and foot pedal. It was pretty much rendered worthless when a little cheap plastic piece in the foot pedal broke. That can was a chore to do everything. Getting the bag in, was a pain. Keeping the bag from coming loose and falling into the can, was a pain. Getting the bag out, was the biggest pain. And whenever you used it, it would snap open and shut like a trap door, with a reverberating metal clang. This can, is everything that can was not. Ease of use is the name of the game. Bag goes in with ease, and stays locked in firmly. Nice large opening is actuated by a wide, sturdy foot pedal that closes softly. It's so nice to have things that just work, and work well. Cutting down on everyday aggravation really adds up. One minor issue is that being so light, it will tend to "walk" a bit. Once it gets backed against the wall, it get's off balance, as well as slaps the wall with the lid. Sticking a little box or spacer of some sort behind it fixes that problem. I've got 2 med-large dogs, but they are trained not to be dumpster divers, so no problems there.

"Good price for a nice looking trash can", It's worth the price I paid for it. It has a locking lid to keep the baby out. It's not very heavy to keep itself planted to the ground, but it works very nicely compared to other plastic step cans.

"Very Nice Kitchen Trash Can", Very handsome looking trash can for the kitchen. The step mechanism for opening/closing the trash lid is quiet. Makes no sound at all. Ample opening for throwing away items that are messy or larger. Any liners will work. Very sturdy. I would definitely recommend this trash can. Good price also.

"This Product Solved My Problem", I endured a metal kitchen waste receptacle for seven years. It was round. Have you ever hated a purchase and nevertheless lived with it for years when you didn't have to? Immediately it rusted all over the inside, especially right under the lid. Also, the small round receptacle never properly accommodated the plastic kitchen garbage bags that I got at the big box store.

There is nothing to dislike about this Simplehuman Step Can. It's plastic so you can keep it clean and never see rust. Now I don't like to harm the environment, but I found plastic to be superior to steel for a kitchen waste can. You can hit it with ammonia or even bleach if you're really serious. Plastic is easier to keep clean and there won't be rust.

This receptacle is rectangular as are the plastic waste bags you'll buy, a perfect match. A rectangular shape is also better than round for the intended purpose. This receptacle is lightweight, big without requiring different plastic bags than the common ones available in huge containers at the big box store.

As for the way it opens and closes, it's just right. The step mechanism is as simple as it gets and looks as if it will last for years. I didn't want a battery powered sensor to open the lid simply because I've heard they open too slowly. Also, I didn't want another item that requires me to change batteries. I think this is the perfect kitchen waste receptacle and highly recommend it, especially for the price. I cannot believe I endured an awful waste receptacle for so long.


"Best garbage can I have ever owned", I wanted the real fancy automated, steel garbage cans but I settled for this cheaper plastic unit. Bottom line: It works well, it is sturdy, good looking and doesn't slam shut when closing. The capacity is enough for almost a weeks worth of trash even with daily cooking. BUY IT!

"BUY THIS ALREADY", I previously had a pretty but useless round trash bin with a circular lid. This trash can is awesome. It's easy to assemble, and the pedal works very nicely. I also like how the lid moves back down slowly and gracefully - it's a nice touch so you don't have to hear the can slamming all the time. I put a large Hefty bag inside, and this works well. Smells are pretty well contained, and if you can smell something, that means it's really been way too long. Foot pedal seems to be pretty durable, and feels substantial when you step on it.

I don't have children/pets so I cannot speak to the effectiveness of the lock.

Minor complaint: Can't really place is flush against the wall since the hinge sticks out. This isn't a huge problem but you notice it. You have to place the can a few inches away from the wall. I still give it five stars because I don't think this affects the functionality, or the joy it has brought into my disheveled life. Highly recommend this can. Very nice to look at and easy to keep clean.

"Not Pet Proof", The can looks good, and the self-lowering lid is a nice feature. But... If you're considering purchasing this specifically to keep pets out of the garbage, you may want to consider your pet's capacity for naughtiness before buying. Both of our dogs have broken into this trash can when locked. Our chihuahua mix (under 20 pounds) knocked it over, causing the lock to pop. Our other dog pulled the garbage bag out the corner of the lid. The lock prevented him from opening the center of the lid, but not the side, and completely shredded the bag. Maybe our dogs are more persistent than most, but this product certainly wasn't "pet proof."

"Nice & Stylish But I Wish It Was Larger", My old trash can was a Rubbermaid 13 gallon step-on & they do not make it anymore, I have had it for 16yrs & the step-on pad broke. So I turned to Amazon for a new one. I found this & the reviews where good so I thought that losing 2 1/2 gallons of space would not make that much of a difference well I was WRONG it is a HUGE difference. Don't get me wrong this is a very nice trash can. I love how the lid goes down slow & you can lock it, I have a 200lb English Mastiff who has never gotten in the trash because I would always put the trash can in my laundry room whenever I went out so she would not have the chance to get in it, so no more lugging trash down to the basement . I use Glad Force Flex trash bags & they fit perfectly. Shipping was fast I ordered on Friday & received it the next Wednesday & that was using the Free Super Saver shipping so it saved me $10.95 in shipping fee(if I had to pay that in shipping I would have found it at a local store). It is just a shame Simplehuman does not make this can in a larger size. That is the reason for 4 stars.

"Awesome", OMG. This can is the best. It looks great, it opens and closes well(slowly, no banging). I have no animals, so the lock was not a concern, but "clasp" and "lock" are too different things. This is a clasp. Certainly not the low price alternative, but if your looking for form and function over discount price, this is the can for you.

"Great Quality", This basket is perfect for my needs. The foot pedal works great and I love the gradual closing of the lid--great idea!! It is very easy to use with the tall white trash bags i get at the supermarket. Removal of a bag and replacing one is very easy and the basket itself is a high quality item.I was so impressed with this manufacturer that I ordered a kitchen soap dispenser too. A big bonus is that Simple Human guarantees virtually all their products for 5-10 years----AMAZING!!!!
