"Deceptive packaging. Doesn't do the job." This product is a prime candidate for the Consumer Reports "Selling It" feature. The packaging states "Extracts screws up to 4-In." The instructions in the packaging state "Tool can be compromised if extracting large screws (bolts) exceeding 2 inches in length and/or have aggressive threads." Deduct two stars for misleading packaging. It removed my 3-inch screw about one-quarter inch before stripping. Following the instructions for re-burnishing and trying again did not work. Deduct two more stars. This product may very well work with 2-inch screws, but will likely require some practice. Going even slightly too fast will strip out the screw head again. If you have any screws over two inches, this is not the way to go. "Worked perfectly for me" I had an entire kitchen full of rusted and stripped screws, all of which needed to be removed and replaced. The Grabit worked beautifully for me. It was merely a matter of adjusting the torque on my drill and working on each damaged screw slowly and deliberately. 24 out of 24 damaged screws removed ... I consider that a great product. "NONEXISTANT" The extractor set has not arrived. I called to report a money clip was shipped but not the extractor set. She said it would go out right away? "Did not work as advertised" Purchased this for my father who was planning to dis-assemble a wooden deck held together with phillips head wood screws. The Alden Grabit Broken Bolt and Damaged Screw Exractors would not remove the phillips head wood screws after several attempts on several screws. "Unscrewed" Alden Grabit Broken Bolt and Damaged Screw Exractors, 4-Piece Set Pros-Does what it says. good price. Cons- Doesn't always drill the hole for the extractor. mostly I think that due to the lack of surface for the bit to grab. Wish there were more sizes.

What our customer's say! "Screw removers", Haven't had the need to use them yet, but they look like they will work. They didn't come in a case as shown, just a thick, clear plastic bag. "Cheap", Very cheap metal, high strength steel would have been better, first time I used it the extractor side broke because it is made of cheap metal! "Glad I bought them", So about year and a half ago I hung a 19 flatscreen on the wall in the den. And it was a horrible experience. You see, whoever the "engineer" was that designed it should be flogged and their engineer credentials shoved up their... You had to screw two 1/4×3" screws (those are pretty big) into a 2×4 stud in the wall using a hex key. A hex key is the hardest tool to work with, and stripped out the head of the screw about 1/4" away from being tight. That's after pre-drilling the hole. So the whole mount has been loose all this time. And you can't undo it because the hex key stripped out the head. The words coming out of my mouth at the time would have made a truck driver blush. So it finally came time that I wanted to fix it by doing it right and replace the crappy screws they sent with proper lag bolts you'd install with a socket wrench. So I bought the Grabit screw extractors. Sure they're late night TV fodder, but figured I'd give it a shot, as the set was cheaper than individual screw extractors at Home Depot. And they worked wonderfully. I had those crappy screws removed in about 5 seconds. Then using a proper method of a socket wrench had the whole thing remounted in about 2 minutes instead of the half hour I spent the first time cussing and yelling. Anyways, the set of Grabits are [........], and every tool kit should have a set. "Not As Good As Hoped", After snapping a few deck screws last summer I thought they might be handy to have a set of ez-outs. My fist annoyance was they were shipped by the "AsSeenOnTVGuys" with insufficient postage. So I left the postman the 22 cents and got them the next day. With no immediate need I tested them by driving a few screws into some pine & cedar deck boards & purposely striping the heads. Following the direction I drilled out the head with the left hand bit and the switched to the cone end to extract the screw applied some pressure, no luck. So after experimenting I found I had to put a lot pressure the drill & go as slow as possible; best done by using my old cordless drill with a half charged battery. I had almost as much luck with the left hand drill end. In the end they do work but you may still have to work at it. "Works, sometimes", Works on short screws. I tried extracting SS 2.5" screws from pine and it plain old didn't work. Thank God for Vise Grips and patience. 
Read this reviews before You buy... "Saved money", It looked like I was going to have to replace the plastic refrigerator roof vent cover on my camper. While resealing seams on the campers roof I discovered the vent cover could not be removed because the head of one of the recessed screws securing the vent was so corroded the metal was crumbling. I thought I would have to break the vent to remove it then replace the mounting plate and vent cover - cost about $75. A contractor friend suggested I try Grabit. At first I had difficulty. The side of the bit which the directions say will burnish and make a recess in the screw head didn't do the job. So, I sank a small pilot hole with a standard drill bit and then used the removal side of the Grabit bit. It worked the first time. Now all I need is to replace the screws not the vent. "Better than expected", I used this product to remove old storm windows with layers of paint on the screws. When I first received it I was leery since it is made in China. I thought it would not stand up after the first couple of screws. To my amazement it allowed me to remove about 44 screws. If you are interested in removing only the heads of screws, use a bigger size than recommended and you can do the job in one step without having to flip the bit over. Good luck on your project. "Like a champ", I have been wanting these easy-outs for some time now, but never needed to use them. Stripped a small screw while working on my bike...that thing was like butter. Used the Alden the day I got it in the mail. Instructions were thorough...product was easy to use...screw backed out real smooth. A++ in my books...great purchase...needs to be in everyone's toolbox "good product", Received a different item for Christmas last year and decided I wanted this product. This has 2 tools in one which i liked. "Its is okay", It is ok, it works but not every time. I had removed 4 screws successfully, but had problem with one other where it didn't work that well, so I had to drill it out. Good Luck... |
