Others say...
"What a great player!" I have a PS3, so I'm already knee deep in the blu-ray experience. I wanted to get a standalone player for the bedroom, so I did a great amount of research. I had it narrowed down to 2 players: The Panasonic BD35 and this player. In the end I picked the Sony because of the price ($189 black Friday) and I'm glad I did. The player is sexy, 2.0 compliant, BD-Live ready (with latest firmware update), and it supports all the new audio codecs...all that one could want in a new BD player. So far it has played every movie I've thrown at it flawlessly (Spiderman 3, Doomsday, I Am Legend, Rambo, Harry Potter...Phoenix, and Indiana Jones 4). The load times are a tad slower than the PS3, but not much at all. Lastly, the picture is phenomenal, edging out the PS3 even. So if your researching players like I did, the Sony BDP-S350 is a winning choice. "Sony BDP-S350" I love it. Not only does it play Blu-ray discs and standard DVD's, but it also plays AVCHD discs I create from my Canon HD camcorder. "I'm pleased" I've only used my new Blu-Ray player a few times so far, so I can make no comments on durability. Set-up is extremely simple, although I have to down-rate the poorly written instructions. Step 7 in the Easy Setup menu has you select output resolution and then you're supposed to see an image; if not you have to go to a lower resolution. I saw no test image at any resolution setting. "Auto" mode nevertheless produced beautiful picture quality on my 40" Mitsubishi LCD HDTV via HDMI cable. I played a standard DVD and found the 4:3 ratio picture stretched to fit my 16:9 screen. The video settings menu offered misleading Screen Format choices of "Original" or "Fixed Aspect Ratio"; "original" mode distorts the original program source to fill a 16:9 screen while "fixed aspect" keeps the original format of the program source, displaying 4:3 content and 16:9 content correctly. "BDP-S350 BLU-RAY PLAYER" Sony BDP-S350 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player I purchased this item on 26 October 2008 and you can not believe the difference it makes when you play a Blu-Ray Vs a Plain DVD. On a Big 42" Screen 1080p with a Sony HT-SS2300 5-1 Speaker System attached...the room becomes a theater...The picture and Sound to include it's effects are top of the line which makes theater going a thing of the pass when you can enjoy a good blu-ray movie at home now. Thanks SONY...for making this possible...a boy that has CP thanks you as he can now enjoy his children movies on a big screen. "Sony blu ray players are horrible" I have been a fan of blu ray technology for many years before the technology was even available. And, the picture produced by Blu Ray discs is phenomenal. So, its sad that Sony produces such pathetic quality blu ray players. At this stage, my player, which is the unit which preceded this model, does not play 70% of the blu ray discs I load into it. Not only that, it takes around 15-20 minutes before I can tell whether the disc will actually load and play, or tell me "Cannot play this disc." For those of us who use Mac only computers, there is no firmware update available, and frankly, you shouldn't have to update your firmware to simply play a blu ray disc with a blu ray machine that is 1 year old. Frankly, you should look elsewhere. Until Sony produces a top quality machine at a reasonable price, either look for something inexpensive that works, or look at a higher end machine like a Pioneer Elite, or a Marantz that might actually play a movie.

What our customer's say! "Excellent player and deal", I ordered this product from Best Buy for $199 the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend and it was shipped broken. It wouldnt power on. However I had a feeling it was defective. On Monday I tried to exchange it and the wouldnt let me but they did want me to pay an additional $100 since the price went up after I bought it. For all of that I might as well have bought at the store for $299. However things did work out pretty well. I ended up getting the player for $199 and I purchased a 2 year warranty on it just in case. To the good part now, this player has played the disc Ive tested in it. The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix, and Kung Fu Panda. The water and snow and water in Chronicles of Narnia was incredible. The water was blue and the snow showed every flake. It also played a DVD+R disc that my brother put in it. I havent tried my JPEG images from the camcorder I just sold but its capable of playing it. Since I dont have a receiver of my own yet we are using my brothers Onkyo 6.1 receiver. Its pretty old now but but it sounds decent. I'll eventually get a 7.1 but for now I have Klipsh RF 52 speakers that make commercials to movies sound excellent. "Sony Blue-Ray Player", I set up the player without problems. The on screen menu was very easy to follow. It was necessary to update the player's firmware. "Sub-standard Blu-ray player (Sony you can do better)", I received the player quickly - go Amazon! I set it up to accept hdmi for video and optical for audio. Optical didn't work (unlike my HD-DVD player). I tried three different HDMI cables (all 1.3 gold plated, bla, bla) and the player dropped signal at least 3 times during one movie on several occasions. In addition, artifacts appeared on the screen. To make matters worse, I had to restart the player on multiple occasions to fix audio issues -- crazy distorted and stat icy. RMAed to Amazon and they sent another player. Guess what? Same exact issues popped up, so I sent it back for refund. Now, I know what you are thinking. My TV or receiver is not working right. Well, my Blu-ray Lite-On BDrom plays movies perfectly on my TV. I'm very disappointed in Sony and plan to avoid their future products. I guess the Sony brand isn't what it once was -- a symbol of quality. BTW Amazon rocks! They get 5 stars and my future business. "Best player out there that isnt a game console", Let me start out by saying that first I was looking at a PS3 which is an amazing blu ray player. I decided it just was not necessary since I have 360 and a Wii. I read reviews and saw that this was a decent player and that the price was coming down on it. Amazon had a nice deal a few weeks back that offered this player for $220 minus $100 if you bought 4 movies with it, most of which were decent titles. At this point I bit. I have had the player for a few weeks now and am able to write a pretty good review. Ok, so to start the player is very slim and small and fits well anywhere. The setup was a breeze with hdmi as it should as it should be. I upgraded the firmware via the internet without a problem and then started adjusting settings on it. The biggest change to make is the quick startup feature. It take the startup time from 20-30 seconds to less than 10 for me. The only bad thing I have read is that this means the machine is always drawing power. It is worth it though in my opinion. A blu ray disc loads up in about 25 seconds and I have not had a problem watching any movies in it so far. The few dvds have put in it look fantastic also. Once I get a better receiver I am sure I will notice the sound difference also with TrueHD. For the price I got it for I think it was a good deal. I see it is now available for about $250. At that price I would probably wait for another drop if you can. Note: If you plan on using BD Live just realize that the USB port in the back is recessed and it makes getting a usb stick in there pretty difficult. I will try and post a picture soon of this for everyone to see. "Great player for a decent price", I purchased this unit in October for a good price at the time $265.00. I have a Philips 42" LCD 1080i TV, Philips Soundbar and connected all via HDMI and digital audio. Sound is amazing, upconverts all very well and was a breeze to setup. I chose the CD method to update the firmware. Ordered online and it was delivered in less than a week. Load times a bit slower but well worth the wait. Don't hesitate to get this one. ![]()
Read this reviews before You buy... "Great Value", If you want to start watching Blu-Ray on your new Hi Def TV this player is a great value for the money. Easy set-up, I was able to watch "Kung Fu Panda" and "How the West Was Won" and was very impressed with the depth and detail in the images, especially in "How the West Was Won". "Nice Unit", This reasonably priced unit is nice, fairly responsive, and produces an outstanding image. BDLive is a plus, although I don't use it very often to look at additional content. "Great!", Probably the best option out there price wise. 5 star in every way. I only have 1 knock. On standard dual layer discs.... theres more of a pause than there should be. Not a huge deal and the manual warns on it but Sony should have done a better job than that. The upconvert of the standard dvds is awesome though. The Blu Ray disc are amazing! Very happy! "Great product for a great price", This was my first blu ray player, it was bought on black friday for $179 which i think is a very good price. Anyways, the player was easy to set up, looks nice, and has amazing picture quality like it should. I have watched I Am Legend, Transformers, and Iron Man and they all look great on my 52" DLP. I also watched Hellboy II on regular dvd, and it upconverted it very well, better than my xbox 360(which only goes to 480p) Even on my large tv there were few jagged edges. The start up and load times were very quick. It turns on in about 15 seconds and loads movies at 30 seconds at the most. It was a great purchase, and i highly recommend it, especially if you can get it for under $200. "Sony really got it together on this one! VERY RECOMMENDED", I am an early adopter. Back in the late 70s I bought the very first VHS tape recorder/player model offered for sale in the US, a Panasonic that weighed as much as a boat anchor, had no frills, an all mechanical transport and probably put out about as much video quality as a cheap webcam. Price at the time, $1000.00! Many years later, I bought one of the first DVD player models ever offered for sale in the US, a Panasonic model that cost $750 at the time, when the units were only for sale in California, and there were only seven (7!) titles for sale in DVD format. With that experience, I thought I would wait a couple of years or so for the Blu-Ray format to get a catalog of titles going, and for the players to work out some early problems and to drop in price. Finally, the Sony BDP-S350 came along, and user comments suggested that Sony seemed to have worked out a lot of Sony's early Blu-Ray player issues. And, the price finally dropped to where you didn't feel like a sucker for overpaying for technology that you knew would have aggressive price cuts when Xmas came around. I have NOT been disappointed! This unit is simply fantastic. The load times are modest and the startup, from standby mode, is really not much greater than many regular DVD players. Blu-Ray playback, and the user interface, is superb, and it is also a superb 1080p upsamlping regular DVD player. The remote is well laid out and the unit has just been great. I had avoided Sony DVD players, for a lot of reasons. But they really got it together on this one. VERY RECOMMENDED. ![]() |
