"easy to use product for making fast and healthy meals"
I liked the sounds of an easy to use product for making fast and healthy meals so I decided to try the OXO Good Grips Salad Chopper and Bowl. For someone like me who is always on the go and hates spending a lot of time in the kitchen after a long day, this is perfect. I've been eating a lot of salad lately since I started a diet program but all the chopping of the vegetables, etc. sometimes makes for a long night preparing dinner.

With this product however, I was able to make my salad in half the time. I've only used it once or twice so far but I definitely see this chopper getting a lot of mileage in my kitchen, and not just for making traditional salads. The chopper looks like two pizza cutters put together an inch or so apart and while not sharp enough to do much damage to fingers, it slices dices and chops vegetables with little effort. It didn't work quite so well on whole hard boiled eggs however, so I see me still having to cut those up a little bit before tossing them into the mix.

The bowl is made of a sturdy plastic, neutral enough in color and design to fit in any kitchen. I do question how long the blades on the chopper would last though and if they are easy to sharpen when the time comes. I'd hate to think I hate to buy a new one every time the old one gets dull. However, that's the only drawback I see to adding the OXO Good Grips Salad Chopper and Bowl to someone's kitchen.

"a quick and easy way to make chopped salads"
While there are many products out there to assist in making a great salad, few have as specific a purpose as the OXO salad chopper and bowl. Like most OXO products, the bowl and salad chopper are made to last, the products are sturdy, have the OXO non-slip grip and are durable enough to survive repeated uses and washing in the dishwasher.

The bowl is sturdy enough and simple enough to go from salad preparation to serving piece at the table (f it is not a formal occasion). While the chopper may not be sharp enough to get thru thick pieces or cucumber or nuts and some pre-prep of veggies is required this set does it's job of finely chopping lettuce and other veggies, cheese etc... to aide in creating a lovely chopped salad.

If you do not have a lot of cabinet/drawer space in your kitchen, this product is probably not a necessary addition to your kitchen however if you have plenty of room to add new equipment this will product is probably a good investment.

"Another gadget that will collect dust in your pantry/closet..."
In theory this is a good idea, throw everything into a bowl and chop it up for an easy and true one bowl salad. In reality though it's just ok.

The bowl is made of OXO's resilient hard plastic that will give you years of performance without getting scuffed, chipped, or broken.

The cutter as you can tell looks very much like a dual wheeled pizza cutter. Of course it does have OXO's patented Good Grips handle that is very comfortable to hold and use.

So I took a bunch of different lettuces, red bell peppers, black olives, and tossed them in the bowl and started chopping. First thing I realized was that it was actually cutting the lettuce and not just mushing it up or bruising it. It also cut through the tough skin of the bell pepper pretty well. After a few seconds of moving the cutter back and forth around the bowl I had a perfectly made chopped salad.

I was pretty skeptical as to whether or not it actually worked and to my amazement it does. The only thing I will say bad about it is that it didn't speed up or do a better then just using a standard old knife.

Pros:
Actually works!
Gives you an awesome large bowl that can be used for other things.
Everything is dishwasher safe.

Cons:
It is another one of those "gadgets" that you'll need to find space for storing.
Doesn't speed up or make a better chopped salad over using a plain ol knife.

"A great bowl, an interesting concept, just not sure it's really needed!"
I love other OXO products I've had over the years---they are so well designed and sturdy. This bowl is no exception. It's BIG--a nice thing in a bowl, so you could make a huge batch of cookies in it, or mix bread or a lot of things that sometimes flow over the edge of regular bowls. It also just has a great feel to it---solid without being heavy, nice smooth edges, etc. I would be happy to have this product just for the bowl.

However, although a salad chopper is a great idea, I don't think it's really that much better than much cheaper alternatives. I made a big salad in the bowl and then chopped it up using the chopper as instructed. The chopper looks almost exactly like a pizza cutter, but with two circular blades and a bent handle. I turned the bowl as I chopped. While of course the lettuce did get cut, I don't think it got chopped any better or more quickly than you could do with any number of kitchen implements you already have. I next tried putting some ham and cheese deli slices with the lettuce. They also got cut up, but I had to work quite a while to make sure each slice was chopped---like when you mix batter, some areas just seem to elude the chopper.

However, this is a good idea. I am not sure how it keeps the bowl from getting scraps, but I looked at the bowl hard after all my chopping and didn't see any, which was nice. The bowl would be attractive to serve a salad in, also. Overall, I liked this product. It would be a nice gift. But I think the chopper part might end up in a pile of other not that useful kind tools, and might years later confuse someone who would wonder why you needed a double pizza cutter!

"Not a necessity but a nice gadget"
I love Oxo products. They're well designed and relatively inexpensive. Having an opportunity to try one for review is a delight. The salad chopper is not one of those can't-live-without-it gadgets, but it sure does come in handy, especially in the summer when there are mounds of fresh produce to be eaten. You can chop veggies for salads, fruit for desserts, cheese, meats, nuts... Your imagination and your chopping arm are the only things to hold you back.

This set is best for leafy items like lettuce and herbs. Harder produce such as carrots and celery will require a bit more banging and rolling, and might prove frustrating to someone who has been using a food processor to do the work the chopper does. Just remember that the chopper doesn't use electricity and so is a greener choice. Yes it takes longer. No, the results aren't as consistent. Does it taste different? It does not. And while some might say the results aren't as pretty, I'd beg to differ. I like a hand-cut look.

Honestly I don't know how often I'll use this, but I'm glad I have it because it's a nice, low-tech alternative to other kitchen tools. I can't wait to try it out on chicken salad or chopped nuts.

What our customer's say!

"There's a good reason that good new kitchen gadgets are rare....", I really, really wanted to love this product. I think OXO makes great stuff and summertime is when I like to make chop salads of all sorts. Well, the concept is just ducky but the application leaves a lot to be desired. The spacing of the dual blades is too wide, requiring many more passes than I thought strictly necessary to achieve a relatively uniform chopping. After 5-7 minutes for a reasonably small salad, my arm and wrist were fatigued and my salad was overchopped - except where overly large bits remained :(
Back to the Food Processor...

"Works great, but expensive", Upon unpacking this item you get a nice solid salad bowl and what looks like a double pizza cutter. It does work nicely, as the handle is ergonomically shaped and the blades cut well. Makes easy work of the chopping once you have the leaves in the bowl. I think some suggestions to make this item a little more practical would be to include a lid that fit securely over the top of the bowl for storage/refrigeration as well as a separate little booklet of chopped salad recipes. There are some included in the little book that comes with this item, but a few more would make it seem like a little better bargain for your money. For those of you who have this already, [...].

"it does chop and it has a nice bowl, but worth the space?", To be honest, our favorite part of this tool is the bowl itself, which is quite large, durable, and looks nice enough to bring to a casual party filled with whatever you want. As for the chopping action itself, you'll need to make up your mind on the trade-offs. It does in fact chop, as it says. But we did have a problem with bruising and wilting of leaves and still preferred the torn method of preparation. So we don't use it for chopping many greens. It does chop peppers, but I'm not sure it's a big time-saver as you still have to de-seed them beforehand anyway and it doesn't take but a few seconds to chop them with a knife. It does a nice job on other items, such as onions and nuts. Not so great, as one would expect, on softer items such as tomatoes. So you're left with a relatively limited usage, at least from our personal preferences. As mentioned, the bowl is quite big, so if you don't have the space to make it easily accessible, I'm guessing the whole thing will gather dust somewhere in the deep recesses of your storage. But if you do have the space, it's convenient enough often enough (though just barely) to warrant keeping it around. Especially for that bowl. And though neither of us have problems handling a knife, even people who prefer torn lettuce or aren't looking to save much time but who have problems with pain in their hands/joints would probably find this much easier due to its configuration than chopping the old-fashioned way. So a solid three for us, but maybe a two for you if you lack space or just use greens in your salads or a four if you have space, don't mind some bruising, and make a lot of salads with ingredients that fit the structural criteria to make this really fly--not too soft (tomatoes), not too hard (carrots) but somewhere in between (onions, cukes, nuts)

"What I like, and what I don't like", I like that when you chop salad in this bowl, it effectively reduces the volume, so you can eat your greens faster and easier. What was not so great was that the roller is not as sharp as I would like, and it somewhat crushes things instead of cutting them. I will try to sharper it myself, but it really should come sharper on it's own. The bowl itself is thick, sturdy and large.

"t's a bowl; it's a cutter; it's way overpriced.", Good size bowl but I was expecting the chopper to be a little easier to use and less time consuming. I still find it easier to cut the items I want in my salad with a knife and put them in the bowl. One reviewer said the chopper looks like a double pizza cutter; that's exactly how I'd describe it. The salad bowl works great and can be used for many other purposes other than just salads. We've been eating salads most every night and most of the items I put in the salad don't chop up well using the chopper, like olives, pickles, and hard boiled eggs. But I will definitely use the salad bowl.

"Sturdy and Fairly Useful", As long as common sense is used, the OXO Good Grips Salad Chopper Bowl is fairly useful. Lettuce, onions, cheese and certain fruits chop easily. It's best not to attempt to chop tomatoes or other softer textured ingredients, as you will probably end up with mush. The chopper tool is basically a double-bladed pizza wheel with a curved handle, and seems to be solidly constructed for frequent use. The blades are not as sharp as those of a pizza wheel, and don't really need to be.
You do need to apply decent pressure during the chopping operation. The bowl is molded plastic with a textured interior and is sturdy enough to withstand a lot of use. I have no information on price, but, if you eat a lot of salads, the OXO bowl may be a useful item for you.

"Chopped salads and more", We make a kind of Lebanese salad that uses chopped lettuce, not torn. While classic salads require torn lettuce (less bruising and leakage of juice from the leaves), a chopped salad depends on the lettuce juice to make a very moist and flavorful salad that is easy to eat. (Recipe to follow.) The Oxo Good Grips Salad Chopper and Bowl make it easy to do this kind of salad.

The bowl is heavy gauge plastic, frosted with a matte texture on the inside, smooth and shiny on the outside. The chopper is kind of a double pizza wheel, whose two blades are about an inch apart, coupled with an ergonomic handle. You hold the handle with the blade facing down and away from you in the bowl and run it over the vegetables, meats and other ingredients to make the chopped salad. Dress it and there you are.

We suspect the handle would be easier on the hands than pressing a chef's knife--possibly if you have wrist problems or arthritis, you may find this more comfortable for lots of chopping. Right now, my thumb isn't bothering me (this is typical for me in cold weather--it's warm now. So I don't know if it would be better based on my experience.)

But, you don't have to lift a cutting board to dump off the chopped veggies--one less thing to wash also.

There are a few recipes in the book for salads, with typical veggies (cukes, etc), a fruit-based salad with apple and cranberries, and a meat salad. You could also use this for chicken salad, chopping the boiled chicken, or a tofu scramble, anything that needs chopping like a salad. The knife needs to be stored in the bowl as it is a bit odd-shaped and bulky for a typical utensil drawer. This could be handy for an RV dweller, as it is easy to use in a limited space.

My recipe (thanks to our friend Steve) for Lebanese Salad--made in the Oxo bowl:

1 head red leaf or green leaf lettuce, washed well and dried
1 English cucumber, peeled
1/2 red or Vidalia onion
1 tomato
1 green pepper or red bell pepper
lemon juice
olive oil
garlic salt
fresh pepper to taste
chopped parsley or chopped mint
Method: chop the veggies, lettuce first. Dress with a dash of garlic salt then lemon and oil. This does not keep, so eat fairly soon after making. Variations can include feta cheese crumbles.

"Chopped Salads are a breeze with this clever tool!", Now here's a terrific product. Every time we have a chopped salad at a restaurant we always want to start making them at home but somehow we're never in the mood to do all that chopping! The OXO folks make it a snap with their Good Grips Salad Chopper and Bowl. The chopper is like a double pizza wheel with that great OXO grip, while the bowl is large enough to really get in there and, with a dozen or so rolls of the chopper, you've got yourself a professional-looking chopped salad. It takes a couple of times to get your rolling rhythm down, but when you do, you'll want to make chopped salads every night. Our first one was an Italian salad that was pictured in the booklet--throw romaine, sliced red pepper, cucumber, olives and mozzarella cheese in the bowl and get rolling--and we dressed it with a terrific homemade honey balsamic and basil vinaigrette. Outstanding--and the bowl does double-duty for serving.

"Well, Maybe...", OXO makes tools for folks with cranky or weak hands, and I have a kitchen full of their wonderful tools. Both the large, heavy translucent bowl and the double-wheel choper have a quality feel to them. The bowl would look nice on your summer dinner table.

Let me explain how this set works, though:

First, you clean and prepare your salad greens. Slice your vegetables. Slice your meats and cheeses. Add nuts if you like.

Once you have gone to ALL the trouble of preparing 4 - 6 quarts of salad (with your arthritic or weak hands), you hold the rolling slicer, and chop through all of the vegetables to create your chopped salad.

This is a beautiful set, and the resulting salads are absolutely delicious (they'd be a great way to use up your garden's abundance), but the process takes a bit of effort, even with OXO's help.

"A Deep Bowl Mezzaluna with Easy to Grip Blades. Go Beyond Just Salads.", It chops, it mixes, it dices, and it's fun! For the creative cook, the mezzaluna-type Good Grips Salad Chopper by Oxo can be more than just a salad chopper.

Today I use it to mince up onions, peeled tomatoes, and mushrooms for my beef picadillo dinner. And it was so easy! Throw it all in the bowl, chop up with the rolling dual blades and it's neatly ready to go when you are. This made food prep so fast and easy to do. I chopped up several items together in about the same time I would have finished mincing up one onion.

Once you start using the OXO Salad Chopper set, you begin to realize the potential this normally unassuming kitchen tool set brings.

Pros:

1. A safer alternative to using a knife. Hands and fingers are away from the blades. Also, the blades are not that sharp, so incidental light contact with it will not draw blood.

2. OXO's chunky non-slip design of the rolling blades, which is basically a dual-blade pizza cutter, would server well for those who have hard time gripping a knife handle due to arthritis or other similar hand problems. The design allows you to handle the cutter in different positions, whichever is more comfortable for your hands. Good idea for cutting down on fatigue.

3. You can mince foods outside just salads. Be creative. Chop eggs for egg salad. Mince nuts without pulverizing them. Chop chives, cilantro, parsley, olives, mushrooms, bacon, or anything else veggie for the dinner you're cooking. Don't limit yourself for just making salads.

4. The generously sized plastic bowl is sturdy and easy to clean. After my rigorous (but not abusive) use tonight, there was barely a scratch on it. I was able to wash the bowl clean in seconds with a bit of soap and water. The outside of the bowl is an attractive smooth glossy surface. The interior is a soft matte finish.

5. It's fun to use.

Cons:

- There is no protective covering for the blades for storage. I'm going to have to be creative in storing it somewhere where it won't be in the way nor get damaged. Enough for me to deduct a star.

---

I'm very happy with my OXO Salad Chopper and Bowl. I foresee using it quite a bit in a lot of different ways, for salads and otherwise. I have every intention of buying extra sets for my family as Christmas gifts (it's never to early to plan). I especially will buy one for my mother-in-law who is horrible with handling knives (too scary =:0) and suffers hand problems. I know she'll love it. The price is fair too.

While initially this OXO Salad Chopper set may seem hokey, give it some thought, and you will probably find more ways to use beyond chopping salads. But if all you want to do is use it for salads, that is fine too. Either way, the OXO Good Grips Salad Chopper and Bowl set can be a valuable addition to the kitchen while also being fun to use and easy to keep.
